Can't wait for this anime, especially since I was going to read the manga today until I saw the announcement! Do you think it will do well with studio MAPPA animating this?

Have this manga in my PTW for quite some time, never got around to it. Ths shit is ancient though, why is it being picked up now ? With 19 volumes, I highly doubt it's gonna be adapted in its entirety...

Also, Free! director and Doukyuusei chara design ? Is the manga supposed to be pretty boy fujo-bait or is this MAPPA's take on it ?

It's a shōjo after all, so the aesthetic follows.

And yup, despite not being a BL manga at all, it had pretty big influence on the fujo of that time, I mean:

Don't know really, but mappa do well in using different character designs and different stories.

If there's any studio right now that I feel would replicate an 80s manga's art style just to be accurate to the manga, it's probably MAPPA, even if they may have to use CGI to do so. Also, Doukyuusei's character designs were lifted straight from the manga it was adapted from, so I have faith that the character designer can translate manga art to animation.

I can see MAPPA (especially with Free's director) highlighting the more romantic undertones, though. Yuri on Ice was too big of a success to let another potential white x Japanese gay romance slip through their fingers. However, I can't see MAPPA resorting to fanservice (as in, stuff that doesn't matter to character development and is only there to sell to fujos) that isn't already in the manga. There's too much to adapt for that.

Who's hyped?

MEMEMEME!!!

If MAPPA resorts to fanservice (aside from what's in the manga), I'll be pissed off tbh. Banana Fish doesn't need it since there's plenty of development between the characters either. It's not fujoshi bait imo, although the characters are the selling point for me.

It's a shame they probably won't be able to adapt all of it. It's not something you can really cut off mid-story... and the ending is really important too. I hope this is popular enough for 2 seasons. I'd be so happy~!

If Terra e (1976 manga, 2007 anime) and Hanasakeru Seishounen (1987 manga, 2009 anime) managed to get more than 12 episodes, I hope that Banana Fish will get it too.

I hope it ends up like Ushio to Tora, which got 2 seasons. If it's like Ushio to Tora, I wonder if 39 episodes would be enough to cover the whole manga?

That was last decade though, and the industry has changed quite a bit in those years in terms of adaptation length. Regardless, I sincerely hope they adapt the full thing.

Considering it hasn't been a while since I have completed the manga, seeing the announcement really reminded me how much that story got me. So...

YES

I do wonder how are they going to cover that much material tho. Not to mention complicated as well.

Thank you so much Santa! Merry Christmas & a wonderful new year!

ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN!!!!

Super excited for this, at the very least, it will get people interested in the manga, right? And if it's good, that's just a bonus! The staff looks certainly looks promising enough! And I really hope this makes Viz re-print the manga (preferably in oversized omnibus edition with lots of bonuses, I will buy it again), and maybe get Umimachi Diary and some of her other series too.

I really hope they adapt the whole thing, but if they can't for some reason, they should at least go through the Arthur thing, it seems like a decent enough stopping point for a first season where they could pick it up again for a second one. I'd rather have them do less better than rush through and not get to see why Blanca is so awesome in all of his glory (rather just have him not show up).

For anyone worried if they're going to be adding in BL undertones needlessly, an important part of the manga is having BL undertones. all they have to do is just use the ones that are there and not overwhelm it and it'll be fine.

Also, there is an actual kiss (in volume 3) that I can't tell you the purpose of, but hey, they have a legit excuse to actually put one in. Ash and Eiji are definitely soul mates, but they don't really get too physical with each other (except in the art book)

I am kind of curious if they're going to go for his early hair style or his later (and more iconic) one.

Don't scare me like that!
I looked to it, and it seems that there is still some 22-episodes shows during the noitaminA time-slot, with Your Lie in April and Samurai Flamenco for the two most recent ones.
So there's still hopes to see more than 12 episodes.

Still 0% chance, Fuji TV decided to cut the noitaminA block in half by removing a timeslot in Spring 2015. This was so they could start to produce films. So unless it gets a second timeslot back, no more two cour shows. This will likely air in Summer 2018, and Kabaneri season 2 will likely air in Fall 2018.

I'm honestly a bit afriad, but also really hyped. I was planning on re-reading it and seeing that it's getting an adaption felt like a blessing. ;u; I hope they don't ruin this though..also hoping for something more than 12 episodes...I really don't see how they could do much of anything with only 12 episodes for this anime.

I'm a little late for the hype train but my hype levels are still OFF THE CHARTS!!!

This is my favorite manga, and the fact that it even has the opportunity to get an anime after so many years makes me so happy. The episode situation is pretty concerning. Especially since most of the action really starts around volunes 5 and 6, I just hope we have enough time to get to the meat of the story.

As far as the studio choice, I have some faith that MAPPA can deliver. I haven't seen it personally, but they were the ones responsible for the Inuyashiki adaptation earlier this year, which would indicate they have some experience handling more serious and unconventional stories (Although feel free to correct me if the adaptation wasn't that good.). They're also slated to work on a Kunihiko Ikuhara project in the future, and if the legendary Kunihiko trusts them, I can't complain. Especially since Ikuhara's work tends to center around more well represented/realisticly portrayed queer characters, I think they could handle the BL undertones respectfully. Notably for every fanservice riddled scene in Yuri on Ice there was an equally sweet and more subdued scene between Yuri and Victor like the beach scene or their engagement. This gives me hope MAPPA will be able to portray similar intimate scenes between Ash and Eiji without necessarily including fanservice elements.

On the bright side, even if the anime isn't all that great, it should give the manga the visibility it deserves. And there's still the possibility that there will be enough viewership to encourage more printruns of the manga. I'd sure love to be able find a copy of the final volume that isn't +$70...

I can't believe this will be made into an anime after so long. It's really weird they'll adapt the manga now, instead of the decade in which it was published.

I was wondering why people put this manga on their 'to-read' lists all of a sudden. I read this manga like 7 years ago, and barely anyone on mal knew about it. I'm excited for it tho.

80s manga being adapted?
and it's beign done by MAPPA?
Hell yeah, I'm excited!

Plus, it looks like some buddy cop action thing, so that sounds cool!
I'm expecting something like "Gangsta." meets "Tango & Cash", but with more BL undertones. Sounds neat!

I forgot that Amazon and noitaminA have this exclusive thing, but what really upsets me is that this means there won't be any nice physical release blu ray release :( There are other Amazon stream exclusive shows that have Sentai doing a home release (like Land of the Lustrous or Made in Abyss), but after Kabaneri onwards, there haven't been that are noitaminA. Maybe it's that no one cared about some of the shows (like Battery), but I would think at least Saekano season 2 would have people wanting a physical release.

*sigh* Hopefully the UK will get a nice release I can import.

19 volumes isn't too bad. Depending on the amount of dialogue and the pacing of the manga (how many two-page spreads there are, how the panel sequencing is done, etc.), you could potentially fit that into a 3-cour TV series.

I doubt this will go for 3-cours, but if they do like they did with Ushio to Tora, they could cut some stuff out of the middle and get it down to 2-cours (and I could totally see this being a 24 or 25 episode series).
Speaking of Ushio to Tora, I'm curious to know how many volumes they adapted there, considering it wasn't a full adaptation. That was 3-cours, and I might estimate they adapted more than 19 volumes worth of content out of the 33 volumes of Ushio to Tora.
