Haha, that singing this epsiode. I like how the guy tried to fight back with his guitar while being in the middle of a lake.

The episode was okay. Felt like it took a different approach that didn't focus on the main girls trying to make their tourism ideas into a success but instead on another character of his own story. The timeline of those photos all those years ago...

A really nice episode and very surprising as well, the past looked fun for the president and the others even if they wanted to go to Tokyo.
I found it very surprising that they used to have a band together they must have been close.
Also the trouble the created the president that is was very funny to watch.

Great episode.

It was pretty cool to learn about the past of Chitose, Kadota and Doku. They were the rebels of their time. xD
Them band and names though- Poison, Beef, Olive. XD

I loved it when Chitose advised Ririko to follow her dreams before she grew old and stopped caring about them. :)

Real nice how so many people showed up for the drying, also helped Yoshi realize that she wanted Manoyama to be a place where people gather and return too.
Time to revive the old festival again and to do that we need to find the three sacred treasures, With that 'Sakura Quest' is starting to have a more literal meaning.

It was nice to know the backstory for Chitose, Kadota and Doku. They were in a band together and wanted to go to Japan, but Kadota stayed behind to "wake up" Manoyama. I loved it when Chitose gave Ririko advice. Lots of people showed up for the drying. The girls want to revive the festival but they're going to need three sacred treasures.

Perfect episode. I loved the backstory of Chitose, Doku and old man Kadota. They all wanted to get out of Manoyama. Chitose had a nice voice.

I was surprised with Chitose advice to Ririko. Considering her actions in the previous episodes and the tone she used at the begin took me by surprise.

Now they have to hunt for the sacred treasures.

I love the Chitose, Kadota and Doku backstory. It was cool to see that Chitose had some residual affection for Kadota under all that hostility.

Sakura Quest brought to mind something I have been thinking about lately. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the concept of agrarianism in literature, film, and so on. In the USA we most famously have the Southern Agrarians, but there are also authors such as Knut Hamsun and Henry Williamson.
Generally it was a reaction against modernity, industrialization, and urbanization. This same theme is encountered on occasion in anime. I could provide scores of examples old and new, but instead just think on your own about those shows that feature a city slicker that moves to the country for some reason and "discovers himself/herself once away from the alienation of urban existence. Maybe one of these days I should work on a list of Agrarian Anime.

I'll add a definition:
"Agrarianism is a social philosophy or political philosophy which values rural society as superior to urban society, the independent farmer as superior to the paid worker, and sees farming as a way of life that can shape the ideal social values."

Well, I grew up in a very rural place (much like the setting for Non Non Biyori - right down to the grade school which was actually closed a few years later due to lack of students). Been an urban dweller since I left for college, and all my jobs for the last 35 years have been in big cities. But yeah, my 'happy place' is a wooded area near were I grew up.

...

Though, about 10 years ago it was all stripped mined for coal. So it only exists in my head now.

My life was similar. I spent the first 19 years in a small city (Pop. 25,000) in a valley surrounded by rocky wooded hills. Just behind my house were abandoned railroad tracks that led off into the forest. The stuff of imagination. Since then I've mainly lived an alienated existence in various cities, only for the sake of a paycheck. Non Non Biyori was one of the anime I had in mind.

Did not expect to find out that Kodata and Riri's grandmother were THAT close to each other when they were kids.....I think that she had feelings for him too up until he pretty much left her hanging (Which would explain why she's so cold to him now)

Still, this episode was pretty awesome and I loved seeing the backstory for the main old characters

The girl's thought must be like "Seriously, what's happening to Kadota right now?"
But it all pretty much cleared after they hear about Kadota and his band's story of the past. But now that the girls want to revive the Festival, they got task for finding the Three Sacred Treasures of the Festival.

I like the idea that Chitose, Kadota and Doku have shown in this episode
They want to check out the world, even though that means leaving everything behind and expose to uncertain future, to chase their dreams.
Just like Yoshino....And me....
So I can relate to them....

But there would always be an idea that urge me to stay instead, and to change/improve
so when Kadota did that, I almost cried...

Damn, dunno why but I somehow missed all three episodes in a row every week! :/

It was really interesting backstory of those guys. Now it explains why Riri's grandma and Kodata are on bad terms lol. I wonder if she had feelings for him but that event ruined all the possibilities... but at the same time, it made me respect Kadota more. I was hoping for something like this, so I'm very glad it happened :D

Story is progressing now :D

Riri hug best hugs. She made a foreign friend despite language barrier, an amazing step, and she's thinking of traveling now.

Lol that dark past was hilarious, but more respect with Kadota's goal and Babaa's sincere talk to Riri. Good country rock too it aged alright. The backstory really gave a nostalgic 50 yrs ago feel, very natural and connects the 3 osananajimis to the present.

Now the "3 regalias?"

The glimpse into Manoyama half a century earlier was interesting. The situation involving Kadota and Oribe became a lot clearer. The former's dedication to his home town was heart-warming.

Probably one of the better eps in a while, in comparison. I never realized how the granny and old dude's backstories could improve this show, but wow I'm glad they did that. I feel like I'm closer to them, I guess, and it's not just grumpy old attitude at face value. Now that I think about it, her granddaughter sings well too, right (in that one ep she sang)? Also the title of the show begins to make more sense.

I thought this was another really good episode. The latest in what's been a really good second cour. The flashbacks were interesting and entertaining. And served to further contextualize Mr. Kadota and Riri's grandmother. Their music was pretty cool too. I found myself getting a little emotional. When Riri's grandmother told her to go see the world. We'd seen all episode how back in the day she'd been desperate to leave. And I thought we were about to learn how far she'd buried those feelings. When she was about to express her feelings on traveling to Ririko. But the spark was still there and she wants her grand daughter to be happy. So sweet.

Most of the rest of this episode was humanizing Mr. Kadota. And I thought it really worked as well. He can be a bit annoying. Sometimes he's little more than an obstacle for them to overcome. But I found myself like Yoshino feeling a certain fondness for him when he woke up near the end. He was just a confused kid who wanted to leave but couldn't abandon his Dad. It's really kind of sad.

This is quite a lovely show. Sometimes I think it's too dumb. Or the art is sub par for PA Works. But I find myself reacting to it strongly almost every week. And eagerly awaiting the next episode. I'm interested to see what they do next. Now that the foreigners are gone and they've done an arc about the old people in the town.

If anything they should probably stretch the flashback to whole episode length, it would have a lot more impact that way. But nice background on those three characters anyway.

Still, it seems this arc is far from over, I bet the search for those three items and preparations for the festival takes another two episodes at least.
Not that I'm complaining or anything but it seems the pacing is bit off. I definitely liked those shorter, faster-paced two-ep arcs more than this.

Though, that mysterious figure ain't supernatural-related, it was amazing it was related to the Kadota-san, Riri's grandmother Chitose, and Doku-san's past, and it was sooo cute. Chitose-san was so beautiful, though. Gaaah.

By far the best episode yet, maybe even better than Maki and Ririko's backstory episodes. Suddenly Ririko's grandmother isn't (just) a crotchety old hag anymore. Even though we did get to see a bit of her softer side since a few episodes, especially when it comes to Ririko, this episode really humanized her. I wonder if her and the president would have eventually ended up together if he didn't chicken out at the last minute and run away all those years ago.
