THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I thought it's Kou's point of view (or it's in another OVA/Special?), but it's an extension of what it was shown in countless little scenes on TV series (Futaba's point of view).

You mistaken it with Ao Haru Ride: Awaken :)

They don't show full "Unwritten" chapter in TV series,
just to make this OAD and add it manga volume -.-

I wish they create special/original story just for OAD, like they did with drama cd,
instead making OAD based on chapter from manga which is available only with manga volume.

That's why I said "extension". TV series only shows bit by bit of the scenes from junior high school time, which I, as non-manga reader, can realize it.

I hope that Ao Haru Ride: Awaken would get animated as well.

Yes, this is an OVA (Original Video Animation). But to be more specific, it is an
OAD (Original Anime DVD). So there is a DVD bundled with the most recent
volume of the manga. (Volume 11 which went on sale on August 25th) Note,
however, that it is a DVD and not a Blu-ray. In particular, DVDs have regions,
and Japan is in Region 2. But North America is in Region 1. Korea, Taiwan
and Hong Kong are in Region 3.

Nowadays, most anime series release each volume of an anime series (with two
episodes, normally) as either a Blu-ray or a DVD. However, there are starting
to be a few cases where only the Blu-ray is offered. (You can't order the DVD
anymore.) So it seems that DVDs are starting to be on the way out.

For this "OAD" to only be available as a Region 2 DVD seems to be old-
fashioned and inconvenient. So I am curious why they didn't bundle it with
the Blu-ray. My impression is that the cost of a Blu-ray is only slightly higher
than a DVD.

Finally, what should such a thing be called? Yes, it is an "OVA". But it would
not be an "OAD". It would be an "Original Anime Blu-ray", I suppose. But I
can't find any indication that such a thing will officially be called an "OABD".
That said, I have found some minority sources who say that the "D" in "OAD"
actually stands for "disc" and the disk could be a LD, DVD or VCD. So it would
be natural to extend this to include Blu-rays.

Anyway, I enjoyed watching this OAD. Great to see a bit of the back story,
although I think that the anime series already did a good job of introducing
the story. This is basically a bonus for those of us who are curious about
what was going on in middle school. I like the quality of the animation. Is
it just me or is it better than the quality of the animation of the TV series?

Usually my thought as well (I don't like the way series seem to get broken up). But in this case I thought it was quite nice as a stand alone even if the main series never existed.

It was nice to watch all the flashbacks together. That scene again with Kou hiding his shyness after asking Futaba!

Really liked it! It was really calm for the most part and of course sad towards the end. Can't get enough of junior high Kou, so innocent and adorable. I definitely want to see the Awaken chapter get animated as well since I would love to hear Kaji Yuuki narrate it through Kou's POV.

Some of the scenes reminds me one of the previous episodes from the season. It was an alright episode I guess. I wish they added some anime original sequences like some of the cameos from the other characters.

Now that I look at it, Ko sure was different than his present self from the ongoing season.

Ehhh, this episode was mostly just scenes already shown through flashbacks in the main series. It was pretty nice and really cute, but it would've been nice if there were more new scenes.

A more detailed story of the main leads in Junior High. So much indirect romance. (^^)
Loved the "Police and Thief" game, particularly the part where Kou backs up a little closer to Futaba and how she was flustered in case if he was an esper reading her mind. XD
I like the special nod they used to greet each other without saying anything.

Rainy segment by the shrine was nice. Flustered Futaba is the best. :3
Kou being a gentleman, letting Futaba use his PE uniform so she doesn't catch a cold. (^^)

It probably took Kou to muster up all his courage to invite Futaba on a date festival outing. Look at him being all shy. XD
Damnit! Futaba's just happened to express her agitation over boys the moment Kou was walking out.. I blame Naitou for being a nagging SOAB! -.-

Futaba looked pretty with that outfit, waiting for Kou by the clock area. Too bad, he probably got the wrong idea.. (._.)

Last scene with Futaba waiting alone by the shrine was sad.. Next time didn't come after that in a while.

Lovely OVA. I hope there'll be another one showing what exactly happened between Kou and his brother in the past, as they're not really that close anymore.

kinda wish I skipped it tbh and spent that time watching something else >>

A live-action movie is coming out in Japan on December 13th, 2014.

Here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtOMh3mMssM

Based on what I can see, it looks like a very high quality production.

Here is the official website for the movie. (Be patient, it is slow to load.)

This OVA was pointless seeing that they just extracted those flashback scenes from the anime and combined it all in this episode. No new scenes and no difference in perspective. Though it was cute, it was useless.

It's really cute how they act so true to their age.

I also like how Kou has the same mannerisms, though not to the same extent in some ways depending on how life changed him.

I think having the whole thing in an episode, with the flow of one, added new depth to the flashbacks.

An unnecessary prolonging of the first five minutes of the first episode.

I missed the cops and robbers part from the series, so it's good that they inserted that scene here. But hearing all of Futaba's thoughts about the events only made her dumber than usual, and more annoying as well. Uchida Maaya was not even trying to convey the character's feelings, it felt like she was just reading the script out loud.

Art and animation quality was also below the series standard.

5/10

IMHO not worth watching, unless you're a fan of the series.

This OVA was sooo cute. It was pretty much exactly how I imagined it would be animated from the manga. I really loved the scenes where no one was talking, like the little gestures that Kou/Futaba made were super cute. AHH!! It was just super cute and the studio did a really nice job with the animation. I was heartbroken when Futaba started crying at the end.

This. I mean I get why a bunch of people are complaining about the lack of new material, but I'm glad the animators are trying really hard to stick to the source material. They really did a great job of animating it, and I think the feelings they were trying to convey definitely came across nicely. Plus, the subtleties of this moment from the past were really well animated. I think it's fairly easy to appreciate this OVA as a stand-alone episode.

Wellll, I'm kind of wondering why it is named ''Unwritten'' while almost all the scene were flashback we already saw. It may have been a long time since and I may have forgotten a bunch of stuff, but I remembered most of what happened. I think that the added scenes were when she was waiting at the pickup point and when she returned under the temple.

Anyway, except that, I found that last scene pretty sad. It was a bit odd to me that she wasn't reacting that much to the fact that he didn't came, but I guess she felt guilty for what she said in front of him.

This is whole episode based on chapter 0 called "unwritten".
TV series just cut out some parts from that chapter and put it in first episodes.

Small observation... I have feeling like Ao Haru Ride has the form of a diary,
chapter "unwritten" and "PAGE.1" begins with a Futaba's monologue and
we usually get Futaba's POV and her inner monologue.
Titles of chapters/episodes are called "PAGES" so even more give impressive that this is written in dairy.
"unwritten" is like Futaba started lead dairy and as first note she wrote about her memories with Kou and rest of notes in high school are wrote up to date.
Someone understand something from this cheapy explanation? xD
