Of the shows I've watched NGNL and Knights of Sidonia have been the stand out shows this year, Mahouka has been bloody awful.

Knights of Sidonia is the actual good show for me personally and definitely looking forward to the finale as well as the just announced second season. NGNL fascinates me more than I thought though given the show itself and what it is just because of it's fan base reactions to it. Honestly watching it's fanbases and trying to get into it's heads has made my time here more than worthwhile and probably made finishing the show the same as well.

Not everyone has the same straight definition of good which is part of what I'm trying to reconcile here. I can only imagine an MAL community where more people realized this though, it'd probably be a lot more inviting and I'd actually get to talk with more people more than have to talk at them and vice versa.

Not when you keep ranting that this show is absolutely mediocre and decide for others that the only reason they like it is because of the fanservice and pandering.

What, you think they're too stupid to get a job or stay in school? It's the opposite.

They're smart enough that they can live comfortable as NEETs as they can win money online whenever they have to.

Things often balance out, so to pay for their superior intelligence they have social anxiety. Therefore they just stick to themselves. No one is entirely perfect.

That's kind of fair. I mean I'll be the first to admit I'm completely out of touch with what general audiences find to be the pinnacle of anime these days and have a lot of trouble rationalizing what people really think about it outside of the hype factor. NGNL hype or rather the sheer intensity of on MAL in particular is just something I'll never fully grasp and it's not for a lack of enjoying just straight guilty pleasure shows, it just didn't do it for me like it did for others even in the heat of the moment. I wish it had lived up to the expectations I had for it (expected to be able to rate it 7/10 with no issues), but not much I can do about that.

They're literally too smart for society. Shiro's intelligence level is so far above human norm that she's no longer gifted, but odd. If she were on a research team, everyone else would be so far behind that they'd not just be slowing her down but be unable to collaborate with her because they literally cannot think like she can, and more importantly cannot relate to her as a human being. And society is all about teams and collaboration, and we all know friendship is everything and it's all about who you know, and if you cannot build connections then it doesn't matter how talented you are, you won't get anywhere. And Shiro is definitely not someone who can build connections.

And Sora is too good at reading people. He can easily tell when people are lying, and he can easily figure out their personalities and motives. Those qualities alone aren't bad, but he's also extremely blunt and unafraid to evaluate people. Nobody is going to feel comfortable hanging around someone who can read you like a book. Everyone can get along because their inner thoughts and feelings are private so they feel secure as they socialize with people. When someone blows away all that security, that someone is suddenly a hostile invader into your privacy and safe zone and makes you feel vulnerable.

I have to say I didn't think much of this show when I first started it, agreeing with a lot of negative points some people here brought up. Basically the premise of having an introverted gamer transported in a world where he can indulge himself in his favorite activity all day long while forming relationships with a cute and sexy all-female cast is just blatant fan pandering. (seriously, have we ever seen a single important male character in this show besides Tet and that old Werebeast?).

Luckily my negative opinion of the series lasted only a few moments as the show got better with each passing episode. Despite the flaws, the whole series was very well directed and while it did have those elements I dislike, it never overshadowed it's main appeal, the entertaining, albeit silly games between Blank and their opponents. I mean, while other series dedicate whole episodes showing all the female characters in revealing outfits, thew fanservice here was kept reasonably low and it never felt distasteful.
The fantastic voice acting also played a big part in my enjoyment. The over the top, rapid fire dialogue during the less serious moments certainly gave a lot of personality to each character.

6/10, I don't think it will get a second season, considering the way Madhouse decided to end it, but hey you'll never know.

A pretty good show.

6.5/10 !

I recently pegged all my ratings down by one too (if you look at the MAL descriptions of each number rating I think a lot of people forget that 5/10 is the middle ground..), and I had NGNL at 7 before that.

Personally, ecchi isn't my thing, and while people will say "oh, why are you watching this then, if it's in the ecchi genre?" I've gotta say, the thing that got me hooked was not the fan service, but how they presented the idea and the setting in the pilot episode. And you'll see a lot of people who don't normally watch ecchi like this show because it was a lot more than just that. I respect that some people do enjoy the ecchi drama, but I don't as much, and I don't need to be a fan of the genre to watch NGNL. It's not distinctly pure ecchi anyway.. like I said, it's more than that.

I think my favourite plot device was still the Rock Paper Scissors game back in episode 2. That blew my mind completely and it was logically sound and clever as hell. I really liked the show early on, but it started pulling out one deus ex machina after another, and coupled with a fairly rushed-out story (only 12 episodes), I started to like it a bit less. The last few episodes leading up to the finale were kind of stale (I think it was the filler stuff just before the warbeasts battle), but I still liked the finale cliffhanger.

If I had marathon'd NGNL, I most likely would've enjoyed it more, maybe rated it .5 to 1 score higher. As it stands, it was enjoyable, but not enough to make me want to wait a week to watch each episode (although of course I still did!).

Still looking forward to the next season though because I want to find out what happens to the world, and the battle with the god Tet!

Cool stuff.

(And as a reminder to everyone fighting over something as trivial as a score.. seriously just stop. Reviews are always subjective and not everyone will like or hate the same things you do. Everyone watches anime for their own reasons and will perceive them according to their own experiences at the time. Just find people who you think matches your own taste and rates similar to you, and stick with them. That's the whole reason behind the score system in the first place. You're fighting a losing battle if you think you can influence everyone to like/dislike the same things you do. No need to go bashing at someone who rated something you didn't like a 10, or someone who rated something you absolutely loved a 2. jeeesus)

By that you must mean that the show was so fun and enjoyable, it earned thousands or even tens of thousands of 10s! Obviously that is what you meant, since it is just plain ludicrous to think that thousands or even tens of thousands of people are throwing 10s at a show because they don't really care...

Being loud and obnoxious and trying to act desperately cool in terms of dialogue and poses all the time doesn't necessarily make a character better or have more depth and personality. If only more LN authors realized this. I mean I love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as a guilty fun pleasure myself to cite an example, but I wouldn't say the characters are particularly deep.

I feel like pulling the Red Letter Media test on this show and asking people to describe the characters, their personalities, and what they are about in this show without telling me what they look like and what their profession and/or role in the work is.

I don't think most people have thought about it that far, but yeah basically it implies the argument that this show is so fun and so by far and away the funnest any anime has ever been in history that it's on a metric of fun beyond measure and puts the show ahead of all but 15 anime productions in existence at least according to MAL users.

Just as planned : The Animation.

7/10, it was a very fun ride, despite the overall silliness of the games and a not-so-likable cast: Steph was mostly a fan service doll treated like shit, Jibril a less fan service-y doll with significantly more agency and a few good lines, Shiro a perfect loli-imouto whose intelligence is paid a lot more lip service than it's actually put to actual use (aside from conveniently solving an unsolvable situation, like the whole planning to a millimeter where Steph would blindly shoot to get Izuna ofc). Kurami was okay Sora was a bit obnoxious and Tet was definitely not there enough.
The humour was very hit or miss but I still had a lot of fun watching the games. My only BIG problem is the loli-service: pure nope.

Why exactly would the Warbeasts care about the Elves invading? Since they literally can't do anything unless they accept a challenge, just don't except and they can't do anything.

That entire coin toss game was completely useless, the Warbeasts had no reason to challenge them again so quickly. All they had to do was not accept any challenges by the Elves or the Flugel's and they'd have had as much time as they needed to come up with a way to beat Imanity.

Pretty entertaining series but definitely nowhere near deserving of it's current rank or score.

Acting desperately cool? I think by nature, these two are just confident in themselves. An element we seldom see in Main Characters today.

What does the word "bland" really mean? "lacking strong features or characteristics and therefore uninteresting." Well, that certainly is the opposite for both Sora and Shiro. Their wit and superior intellect definitely stands out as their most prominent features. That feature alone makes a character genuinely interesting, since most characters today are just given something, they don't really do anything to earn it. It just happens. That also includes things later on, things just "work out for them". For Sora and Shiro however, they earn everything they get. They outsmart their opponents and strategically plan all of their possible moves.

Now what's also interesting about these characters is how they became in such a sorry state in the real world in the first place. For such gifted individuals, what happened to them that made them shut themselves out from the world? Obviously hints are dropped every now and then throughout the series and Shiro's was, for the most part, explained. But we still do not have a full understanding of their past. And that mysterious element keeps you attached and invested in these characters, not only because of their past, but because of what they wish to achieve now.

If you want to talk about bland characters, think of Kirito or Eren Jaeger. Sora and Shiro are the very opposite of them, in every way.

Well, what a fun ride NGNL was. I didn't expected that when I saw the PV, ended up being more than a pleasant surprise.

One of its great quality was his animation. Nothing to say on that other that it was really incredible in every fucking scene. The colors palette gave the show that great fantasy/ecchi/comedy feeling.

The character were really great. There is pratically no character devellopment, but Sora and Shiro are so OP that they didn't really needed character devellopment.

The OST was really great. That mix of techno and more ambiant music was good and of course, the OP was amazing.

The episode was really great. I expected Steph to end the game, because of that order, but not that way! That was such a Steph way to win a game.

Of course, Sora is no dictator and continue to be fair play. That ending was such a cliffhanger though, really make me want another season...

Afaik Shiro hasn't proved to be anything but a somewhat very insipid character in a way more colorful cast (regardless of whether or not one liked the cast).
And say whatever you want about Eren, but being an big ball of rage does not by definition go hand in hand with blandness (there again, regardless of whether or not one liked the character).

ps: yep, Mahouka would've been a better example.

No, they cannot use violence, but there are other means of exerting pressure that would not violate the ten rules. The Elvish country is both the largest country (and is probably economically more powerful) and they possess some of the most powerful magic among the races on Discboard who are interested in such matters (I get the feeling several or the most advanced races don't bother with the mundane that much (Flugel and Old Deus as two examples)), and above all else the elves are highly motivated to extract revenge. With their illusion magic they could easily trick a lot of warbeasts into competitions and start whittling them down.

The reason why the Miko re-challenged Sora so fast was because she knew the clock was ticking and now was the best time to try to get Sora to give her what she wanted (all the war beasts protected, don't forget that the Elves have slaves). With every day individual warbeasts would be picked off. With Jibiriru's allies entering into the fray, this would only happen faster.

So overall it did make sense, the Miko knew she was in an unwinnable position and that delay would only make the terms worse for the remaining warbeasts.

The thing that is good about this show, and why it deserves to be ranked highly as being exemplary for its genre, is that the animation, while perhaps not explaining everything, does give enough information and hints to let one figure things out, or at least when something happens one can go back and say "oh, yeah that makes sense".

Even this episode, all the pieces that Sora used to put together his strategy was explained before the game even started: that some warbeasts had heightened senses, that they probably were monitoring the players so that the only way to get a surprise was to use Steph the way they did, and that a warbeast probably could only be attacked/defeated by complete surprise.

Of course there was no way we could put the pieces together before watching it, but at least the pieces had been shown to use before they were used.

I wished more shows did this.

the light novel explained it much much better. Basically they were trapped by both air and land due to the flugels and elves. before the game started when they were trying to escape off of their continent. sure they won't have to accept their challenges but they were about to be picked off by those that knew "their game". but since they lost all there resources on the main land they can't live for long on those small islands. so they can't gain more land they have to fight back imanity since those were the only people they can beat. but in the end they were all bluffs by soranwhich planned ahead to take the elves n the flugels.

Like i have been saying to everyone read the light novels explains much better. And i highly suggest you start from volume 1. btw episode 6 with jibril it was much better in thw light novel volume2. Also Sora's disappearance was much more intense. in the beginning of volume 3. they also have a much clearer background story trust me you won[t regret it.

Sora is generous. About all that this episode showed :P

Fun episode, but overthinking never does good. (Wait let me think about that...Infinitives are usually bad so....)

I think Miko is not a Old Deus but a medium because she is a shrine priestess.
A drama has a progressive thought, an emotional climax and a resolution, but our lives aren't like that. All we get day after day, are a bunch of vague anxieties that are never really resolved.

I will not bother to read up all the 30+ pages posted before this one so I will just say:
It was everything that I excepted from NGNL's anime adaptation last episode, I hope they make a S2 but if they don't I still have the LNs...

One thing that amazes me is the constant attacks on characters, mainly Sora and Shiro for being "bland".

As for Sora being "loud and obnoxious", there are two factors why does he behave like that despite being hikikomori etc.: one, they're in the new world, which means no one knows them and nobody will judge them for their intellect. Even better, new people they met until now have accepted them for who they are, which means they can open a little to the world. Two... that new world is game by design, with last boss being Tet. Sora and Shiro are gamers and very confident in their abilities (to the point of Sora displaying arrogance), and Tet has (not directly) challenged them.

And come on. It's just the beginning of the story, what do you expect of characters, to completely change themselves right at the start? Out of 16 races, only 2 have united, which means 14 more until Tet can be challenged. There's plenty of time for character development.

As for the episode, I don't have much to say: amazing as always, but I have 2 quirks with it.

1) Throne room scene has been removed (time constraint, again). While important plot elements have been moved to bathroom scene (which was shortened), result was messy enough for me to ask "wait what?"

2) Revelation of Old Deus (a.k.a. Volume 6 spoiler). While it was awesome and has pumped me up for S2, I have to side with people who are concerned about it damaging the continuity of the anime.

If HF ended up being a single movie, what would it need to do so it can get a high score from all of you?

Not air.

Episode interesting.
Under the point of view of the plot was very interesting anime.
Narration perhaps a little too full of humor, but now this is the tendency of all series of the 21st century, this may also be a point in its favor because many users prefer also a component very moe and full of fanservice.
Drawings and animations good, Madhouse has maintained a fairly decent level, in light of his past works.
Lively colors, although a bit annoying.
all in all a aserie it deserves, but I also Aspetos the second season.
Final rating of 8/10!
