2023 had 29 dubs which aired before 2022, with a combined total of 274 backlogged years.
2024 had 27 dubs which aired before 2023, with a combined total of 218 backlogged years.
Dub Records Set in 2024
1: Not exactly a record, but it's interesting nonetheless. It's the first time Crunchyroll has used VSI Group to dub an anime (Sound! Euphonium).
2: Not exactly a record, but it's interesting nonetheless. It's the third year in a row that Crunchyroll's in-house studio dubbed 84 anime.
3: A record in a bad way, it's a record low amount of released dubbed anime (not simuldubbed) since keeping track of basic dub output in 2017. Only 56 this year, and that's 20 less than 2023 (and 2023 was already a drastic drop from the previous years.
4: A record in a bad way, Sentai had a record low 16 dubs, which is the least amount of dubs since keeping track of basic dub output in 2017. In tandem with this, Sentai also released zero dubbed films this year.

For me Crunchyroll impressed me the most (solely because of the Sound! Euphonium dub) and Sentai Filmworks disappointed me the most (don't even get me started on their decision to pause dub production on Danmachi, haha).

That would exclude recap films and exclude most minor entries like Specials and OVAs, though there are a couple of exceptions.@anime-prime regarding your bit about the backlog, what are you including in this? are you including everything ever released minus compilations and that sort of thing or is there a specific criteria for this part? also, while I understand it may be entirely speculation, do you have any theories as to why the number of Eng dubs has been decreasing? As to why the number of dubs has been decreasing, I would say that it's mainly a factor of Crunchyroll growing so big that it is both edging out the cheaper competition like Sentai and is also providing them less of a need to compete for English speaking dub viewers. To get into a little more detail about each point, since Sentai and GKIDS (and other minor licensors) can't license as many popular shows and movies that they used to cause they are outbid by Crunchyroll or Netflix, that means that producing a dub is more risky since the viewership might not be high enough to justify the added expense of a dub. That results in them being more finicky about what gets dubbed. And it's just a downward spiral of them becoming less and less profitable as time goes on until they get bought out by a bigger corporation or go bankrupt. This isn't just because of Crunchyroll. Netflix and Disney both contribute to this problem for the smaller licensors. As for the second point, since Crunchyroll is in a very stable position and doesn't need to compete with anyone as much as they used to in the simuldub market, they can afford to spare the extra expense that they used to outsourcing their dubs to other recording studios. Crunchyroll's in-house dub production has peaked and they are sticking with that ceiling consistently. They just rarely outsource these days. Instead, they are focusing more and more on dubbing in other languages around the world to get dub fans from other countries who don't speak English. While their English dub output isn't as high as it was a couple years ago, if you include all language dubs it might very well match it or even exceed it in number. And as a final part of speculation, I think that the decrease in backlog dubs points to a very sad fact that companies are finding even popular backlogs far inferior for profits compared to simuldubbing a current generic isekai. That leads to major and minor companies alike skipping out on dubbing these backlogs with extra resources when they used to spare every expense to dub those backlogs. ------ The first episode of ZENSHU has been released on Crunchyroll! |
