Synopsis

Ken Usato, an ordinary high schooler, wishes for something fantastical to occur in his unremarkable life. Such an opportunity arrives when he is transported to another world alongside Kazuki Ryuusen and Suzune Inukami, two prodigious members of his school's student council. Arriving in Llinger Kingdom, the three are deemed to be the heroes tasked with stopping the impending invasion by the Demon Lord's army. However, this is a misunderstanding—Usato was summoned by accident and, unlike his two friends, is not one of the heroes.

Despite this disheartening revelation, Usato learns that he has an aptitude for the extremely rare healing magic. This catches the attention of Rose, the intimidating captain of the kingdom's Rescue Team, who forcibly takes custody of Usato to mold him into a full-fledged healer. As he undergoes grueling training under Rose's supervision, Usato resolves to become capable enough to protect his friends from the dangers of this world.

So.....before we move on to the season of ‘Big Isekais’, Winter 2024 quietly delivered some decent shows within the same genre. Among them, ‘The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic’ is probably the one closest to being termed ‘Generic’. However, it handles certain aspects so well that the ‘Generic’ or ‘Clichéd’ elements become almost negligible. ‘The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic’ was unexpectedly a good watch.

Plot(7/10):

The first 20 minutes of this anime mostly contain the ‘clichéd stuff’. Multiple students get summoned in a hero summoning, and the protagonist receives the least powerful ability (Healing). Everything up to this point is what you would ...

Mixed Feelings

An excellent anime with a lot of add-on problems which are annoying.

Firstly, this anime is qualitatively very good, and is an 8/10 in my opinion. But that doesn't detract from the many issues that keep this anime from being a masterpiece.

These issues would roughly come down to three problems; 1-Characters, 2-Pacing, 3-The Ending.

1. Characters:
The characters are really well done when they are on-screen, the problem arises when you actually see the amount of characters that are main characters that maybe get 40 minutes combined for all MCs that are not Rose and Usato for the entire season. This is probably an issue of this anime ... only being 13 episodes long, and not 24–26 episodes long.
This is probably one of the most annoying issues with the anime, because Usato over the span of the season becomes way less interesting as a character, while every character shown on screen besides him has a much more interesting personality, for the most part. This isn't a very big issue, as this anime is probably meant to have a second season to expand the characters and locations, but this does become very much a problem for pacing (get back to it later).
Next would be the characters that cause some issues with the plot, or are somewhat annoying or useless & are used almost entirely as a plot device; The biggest offender of that is Blurin, it isn't the fact that he is not a decent character, actually they are good at points, the problem with him is that he is an overused "comic character", meaning he interjects with many scenes when plot happens. This isn't a bad thing for a good deal of anime, but when a character like this is overused and gets repetitive because their entire purpose is to interject themselves into scenes to stop conversations that extend the plot, it really makes a good character become annoying, plus makes them disposable for comic relief, which is what Blurin becomes, he only interjects in serious scenes to draw away from the plot, which is really repetitive and upsetting. Another character which has issues is Kazuki, he has almost no story the entire season, and you do not see his advancement of techniques like you do with Suzune, he basically sits on the sidelines more than side characters like Blurin. Kazuki makes almost no impact on the story this season, and is almost as rememberable as the guards at the castle, which means, he is not very memorable.

2. Pacing:
The pacing for this anime is all over the pace, the first portion of the show really pushes the story forward, then after the first half the story really starts to slow down quite a lot, which wouldn't be a problem if it didn't seem to artificially extend itself, but it tends to make episodes that really could've been combined with another episode. Episode 13 is one that could've been part of episode 12 if episode 12 had a faster pacing that didn't extend battle scenes to be 15 minutes of the episode, this could've been compacted into 13 easily if the pacing was more uniform across the series. This also isn't too much of an issue, all things considered, but it is a bit weird how the producers set up the episodes, where it needs to force itself off of conversations using Blurin or another character as a plot device when the producers realize they used too much time on one scene.

3. Ending:
It ends on a sharp cliffhanger, which means that you will have to wait a very long time for another section of this anime to be adapted from the light novel. This is probably the worst aspect that a show can force out on a finale, especially when it seems like it wasn't exactly where the plot would've gone to and ended where they could get away with it. This is by far the worst part of this anime.

Conclusion:
This anime is definitely worth a watch if you can stomach a cliffhanger of an ending, if you cannot then this might be a very underwhelming series for you, but I still would recommend giving it a try before you might give it up.

This is such a frustrating series. The premise both felt like it was written specifically to appeal to me and repulse me. The former because, as someone who commonly takes on the healer role in online games but still likes to throw hands as a healer, the entire concept of a "wrong way to use healing magic" felt more personally investing. The latter because it's as basic isekai as isekai premises get: three students (because of course they need high schoolers) get summoned to a fantasy world because they have to save the kingdom, one of whom just ends up coming along for the ride ... but, of course, ends up with the special magic that distinguishes him even from his fellows. To be fair, it doesn't stay rote, as Usato quickly finds himself at the mercy of the powerful and sadistic healer Rose, who steals just about every scene she's in. So begins an ultra-fast training arc that actually makes some sense for once, since healers can repair their muscles and recover their stamina rapidly. Add a cuddly blue bear companion, some decent fights in the wilderness and an incoming army of demons and you've got yourself the makings of an investing isekai series.

Trouble is, that only gets you to episode 3. So, what happens after that? I'll keep things vague to avoid spoilers:

Usato trains. Usato and one of his companions from his original world tool around in the woods. The invasion is imminent... for several episodes! Everyone prepares themselves... and now some backstory! Finally, the promised fight arrives... and ends anticlimactically before trailing off into a couple of episodes that feel comparatively drained of significance. So, yeah, this series has some serious pacing problems.

But it's not just pacing. The writing in this series has so many problems. They insert a plot point where Usato learns of impending danger in the fight ahead and barely acts upon it. Sudden power-ups and conveniently effective magic are frustrating, most of the other characters feeling like they only as scenery (even characters who are supposedly powerful), the series barely seems to use its isekai premise (why couldn't these have been three random kids from this world? They never use technology or knowledge from the other world), and everything feels shockingly easy with healing magic. Who knew? It doesn't help that even the great Rose feels significantly less interesting after we learn her backstory (though she's still the best character in the show). Sometimes, less is more, and I think if her story had remained more shrouded in mystery would have been better than what we got. It doesn't help that the whole narrative direction of the series feels like it's barely established. There are many ways to do antagonists that work, and they certainly don’t all have to be nuanced (Frieren pulled demons off very well with little to no nuance), but this just came off as lazy. It's a nice excuse not to give any of their enemies more than the bare minimum in character development.

Put simply, the writing for this series isn’t good. It took what was a simple but intriguing idea and just didn’t know how to use it effectively past its early stages. It’s a shame, really, because there are the building blocks of something worthwhile here, but the series doesn’t capitalize on its opportunities. It drags out elements that aren’t worth the time and rushing through others that should matter more. I really thought this one would be more worthwhile, and it’s doubly frustrating because they set up more of an adventure-focused narrative for a S2 that may never happen. It seems like they have an interesting world to build, just a shame they have barely showed us any of it so far. Much as I might give it another chance based on that alone, I don't think this season earned a sequel, no matter what potential it might have.
