Not as touching as the original series but I still really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the 2nd season. Fans are so lucky to get this in the current market, it was literally the last thing I was expecting.

Beautiful episode, with a great message. It was good to see Ginko again. And I'm glad that they also showed Tanyu.

I'm so hyped for season 2.

Beaautiful. Just beautiful.

I have to admit though, Mushishi is one of the rare shows that I've watched in which I prefer the dub over the sub. I just cannot get into Ginko's sub voice... all I can hear is Travis Willingham. I think he did a brilliant job in the dub, and that voice defines Ginko's character for me.

Well, I'm going to have to deal with it when the second season comes out, because in no way or form will I be waiting for more Mushishi anymore. xD But, I will definitely rewatch the show when the dub comes out!

I have so many memories about Mushishi. I watched the show for the first time when I was in 7th grade, I believe. I wasn't able to appreciate it fully, but I still loved it immensely. So many afternoons I spent watching Mushishi, and at the end of an episode, I would peacefully fall asleep to Toshio Masuda's simple piano compositions. Four years later, I find it much more profound, but still just as relaxing.

The great thing about Mushishi, though, is that it is such a rewatchable show, much like Gintama. The episodic nature of it owes toward that. I can play any episode of Mushishi whenever, and still be totally entertained. I do the same with both Gintama and Spice and Wolf.

Anyways, beautiful special. Very nostalgic. I can't even tell how excited I am for the second season, but I'm not anxious. Like Tanyuu, I'm patient ;)
Oh, GinkoxTanyuu anyone? ;D I know it would never happen, but it's just fun to think about. ^-^

I don't know why I didn't watch this show long ago when it came out although the first three chapters of the manga were incredible.
I watched S1 for the first time right before this OVA, because there were an OVA and a second season, thus I don't have the same nostalgia effect that you all had.

But, it could very much have been the 27th episode of the first season that it would make no difference, it was definitely Mushi-shi, the same Mushi-shi, the one that you watch and then, you feel GOOD.
I was feeling good after each episode and this special is no exception.
It's so relaxing, and Ginko is an incredible character.

I was as well very excited when the special made a cameo of all season 1 characters. Still I had hard time recognizing all of them. The only thing I have againt this show is that I think the art doesn't really make difference between characters, expect for the main ones. There are a lot of kids who looked like each other in first season.
Still, I like this art, I like this show so much and I'm so hype for the second season !

( YOU TOLD US 1 HOUR, MAL. YOU DECEIVED US ! I would have appreciate 15 more minutes of Mushi-shi :D)

I haven't read the manga, but I wouldn't be so sure !

I think there will be nothing shown between them, but I think that you can find some romance hint in this special.

Who do you think Ginko want to use his crystal on ?

When he said "I hope there will be nothing on the way" (or something like that), I think he was hoping not to come across any trouble where he know he would use his crystal to cure someone, as he is a good person.
For once it shows us Ginko feeling a bit self-centered, as I think he would prefer to use his crystal on Tanyuu.

But that could be only speculation, I didn't read the manga.

(Buuuuuuut, I would personaly prefer Suzu from episode 15)

I interpreted it in the same way, actually I really hope they show a "kind" of romantic relationship between the two of them in the incoming S2.

I thought it was great.

Some OVAs can be real shitty, but the episodic nature of Mushi-shi probably helps out.
Definitely fit in with the series and lived up to my expectations. Can't wait for the next season

Really good special, I'd give it an 8/10. Honestly, I think I like what it represented better than what it was. In layman terms, the thing I love the most about this is that Mushishi is back but I don't want to detract from the actually quality of the special.

Honestly, how neatly and easily things wrapped up here with the girls kind of bothered me but only Mushishi could pull this off with enough finesse that this ending doesn't outright bother me. The atmosphere here was as palpable as ever, this special only reaffirms my stance that Mushishi is the most atmospheric anime out there. It's a rare phenomena that this 45 minute special felt like it went by in only twenty minutes while lasting for an eternity. It really pulls you into their world, the life but the time spent there is always fleeting even if its only subconsciously felt during the experience. I'm not sure if I'm making any sense but Mushishi just has the quality about it and I think it's best exemplified here. Whether I'm making sense or not, that's only one part of the beauty that is this series.

This was also my first experience with the sub and I just don't think it matches up with the dub which I thought was essentially perfect. Thankfully, the track was still good so it didn't hinder the experience but I really like the dub better here. Even though I was disappointed the Sore Feet Song didn't play (please return with the series come season two), it's hard to complain when everything else about the OST is still as beautifully composed and implemented like it was here.

Can't believe I have to wait months for the second season to start. Had to wait a week to watch this on Crunchyroll so I don't have a premium membership and that wait almost killed me.

Splendid special, I just finished the first season and I feel like I was watching another episode of it, I'm glad they were able to capture the same Mushishi atmosphere and emotions. It was nice to see Tanyuu again and this story about the eclipse and the two sisters was very wondrous and fascinating. I bet those people were never happier to see the sun again. Adashino was funny, poor guy just won't get a break :p. I especially cracked up when the kids started jumping on him for the sunglasses. I actually hope to see his past in the next season and how he became a Mushi collector.

This was a very satisfying way to catch up on the journey until spring, can't wait to see more of this wonderful world of mushi and more of Ginko's adventures. 9/10 easily.

Everything from the original series carried over flawlessly with the atmosphere, the intrigue and the characters all combining to create a deep and thoughtful tale that is signature of the series. The formula still works and with the calming OST, this special is definitely earns its place as another one of Ginko's tales about the mysterious nature of Mushi and people themselves.

This is a great ova/special episode! 9/10 . There is a slight improvement from the prequel....like ...Ginko's tobacco no longer 'bend' too much hahaha :PP

But I like the flow of the story here , the way they represent it with emotions and compatible musics . I feel it . Second season !! :)

Anyone who has spoken to me on here knows about my unrivalled love for this anime.

This special was heart-achingly beautiful. It's like the first season never ended, only hibernated. Fantastic storyline, believable three dimensional fleshed-out characters moving and weaving through emotional situations. The eclipse/montage scene literally gave me goosebumps, with that familiar gorgeous soundtrack.

By the way, if anyone knows online of anywhere i could get the music played in this episode, i would be very grateful.

A well-deserved 9/10 from me overall.

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered already. But is this special a prequel or something to the original TV series? Ginko doesn't know what happened to himself and can't see mushi?

Edit: No, that can't be right because he knows Tanyuu for instance. So does this story stand apart from the series or am I just confused. I'm starting to suspect the later.

This is simply a sequel... what do you mean Ginko can't see Mushi? Of course he can.

The OVA was great, the moment of the eclipse showing all previous casts looking at it was nostalgic

Hiyori and Hinata story reminded me of Aya and Ito
The story and animation was good, Ginko running with the villagers towards the sunlight pushing the barrel on the cart was funny
Nice to see more of the characters interacting compared to it's first season and it felt more light with the Adeshino moments

It seems like the second run will have some of it's old characters reappearing by seeing Tanyuu in this OVA
Can't wait to see it!

What a treat to see some familiar characters from S1 while the sun was being eclipsed. Also, the girl from the archives makes another appearance and looks like we'll be seeing her in S2! C'mon Ginko, let's see some romance.

One big relief is that the "feel" of the show is still the same. Eagerly awaiting the 2nd season.

Another weird case of mushi but Ginko is there to solve the mystery again!

As before, the art is really beautiful and relaxing.

The OST, now I remember why it was so great in the first season :3

At first, I found the little girl annoying and selfish, but when I rethink about it, it's easily understandable that a girl that have been stuck in a little house for ages to want the situation stay like that forever.

Still feels like the same old Mushishi. Just the way I love it.

I thought the girl was albino at first, but it was just a mushi effect. Still, loved the story.

Also, the Japanese dub is ok, but I like the English one much better. I'll definitely watch it again when it's in English.

I liked it where Ginko was gonna hand that crystal over to Tanyuu, they'll make a good couple. Also gotta love the symbolism of parallels between the sun and the moon, both literally and figuratively

I don't have the words to desribe how beautiful the character art and the backgrounds were. I just finished the first season as well (which imo has one of the best looking backgrounds in anime) and I see they've improved the character art as well.

I finally got around watching this after rewatching the first season and it was great as expected. The soundtrack was in my opinion even more amazing than usual and so was the animation. I noticed they also improved a bit the design of supporting characters. There are few anime as pretty as this one and none can compare to the atmosphere it creates. Also, I found how they showed the characters from the first season at the beginning of the episode a really nice touch.
The story of this special was interesting and the way the mushi was defeated was cool, so even on that front I was satisfied. The only complaint I have is that I cringed every time that white haired girl showed up on screen, she was really unbearable even considering her situation.

Now onto Zoku Shou...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

This was absolutely fantastic. It was even more so since I didn't read the manga version first. I always wished Mushishi had some anime exclusive stories (made by the mangaka though, of course) just because I'd never get tired of it and it would be nice to watch a story that I don't know about.

Ahh what a lovely show! I guess I'm lucky (in a way) that I didn't have to wait 8 years for the sequel since I just finished it a few days ago. But it was wonderful to get back, with new and improved visuals accompanying the same old ~atmospheric~ quality.

This was also my first experience with the sub which felt a little bit lacking to me since i'm so used to the English dub (one of the best dubs around imo).
Same here, but I didn't find the sub lacking. On the contrary, it was an enjoyable experience - I'm glad I could appreciate both the sub and the dub for this show.

And I really liked the sliightly tousled look to Ginko's previously-smooth hair. Loved the subtle 'cameo' of the characters we met in season 1. On a mushi note, these creatures look much prettier here, the colours and the glow was done so well!
