This was a nice episode, especially because nobody was killed. Haha, nobody likes Fuu.

Really loved this episode, didn't expect to since it didn't further the series all that much, but was super enjoyable to watch. The professor was great, really tapped into Mugen's spirit :D

This episode was funny to me personally. Since, I took Japanese class in grade 11. And the only symbol I remember by the end was no. Just like Mugen. What the hell XD

I wasnt aware every episode of this was meant to develop the plot further. Its a wonderful, rambling journey with many themes and some awesome style.

Well, I agree it hardly has a decent plot but... I think that this is a clever social commentary on how eras are changing. In the Edo era, there were schools for training in the art of the sword, but the disciples of these sword masters are graffiti masters, symolizing the cnahge of people's interest in each passing era.

For you guys, this is the exact point of the episode lol

Felt like a filler episode but I still don't dislike this side of this anime where rap graffiti etc is being used despite the fact that the plot's been set in an ancient era. It's sometimes amusing to see these two different times clashing with each other.

I liked the episode in general. Mugen learning how to read was great!
However i couldn't help but feel bad for Niwa. Despite the fact that he sacrificed his life to leave the dojo to his sons they let it fall apart completely. Such a highly disrespectful thing kept bothering me. Couldn't really sympathize with them.

didn't Jin say in the last episode that he wasn't familiar with the west? doesn't this whole episode conflict with that statement?

this has to be one of my favourite episodes of all anime i watched. honestly the simplicity but at the same time the amount of things that happen is just fantastic. speaks a lot about how we fight our wars now: the brothers fought with pencils instead of swords and it freed them. art over war.
(not sure but until now this is probably the only episode where no one gets killed?)

This was a pretty good episode but one thing I don't get is how did Mugen read Fuus diary in the recap episode if he couldn't read before?

Was so interesting to watch because of the way modern things like fashion, language, music, street culture seep into the older times :D ..the one with police arriving too..

Man, Champloo has been a real mixed bag for me so far.
For every awesome episode, like the previous one, we get one that's absolutely retarded like this one.

It's not just that it's "filler", as i came into this already expecting an extremely episodic show like Bebob, it's that episodes like this one are so dumb and uninteresting to me.

Mugen's free natured spirit managed to carry out the task that was beyond the abilities of the strict Jin. That single scene of realisation on his face was the crux of the episode and seemingly flew under the radar of people complaining about this episode being pointless and not progressing the plot. Jin follows most if not all rules in the book, and even though he achieves utmost mastery of the Way, he goes through life mostly unhappy. Yet, that uneducated ruffian that lives for the moment and abides by no rule, is not only content with his life, but continues to prove him wrong about many things, often achieving even the impossible. And to top it off, he's by no means a show-off in terms of sword mastery. I can't wait to see how much that will change Jin by the end of the series.

That was hilarious!
This series is so ghetto. I love how they incorporated graffiti.

Coincidentally, even I know only one letter from Japanese, 'no' XD.(Learnt it from Doraemon when I saw Nobita write his name multiple times throughout the series). That teacher thoXD.He really is a dedicated to teach grammar to anyone.

I love how Jin was trying to hold in his laughter when the two men were actually fawning over Momo and not Fuu lmao.

Oh, this episode took me back to time when I was learning Hiragana/Katakana. I relate to Mugen, I used to confuse "re" and "ne" all the time :D And "no" is kinda meme now.
That teacher is a legend, he is my favorite side character in the anime.
Also, it was also so cute of Mugen to be proud of learning to read, and write things everywhere.
This is my favorite episode so far.
