Having just started it this seems like its gonna be your typical anime drivel, over sexualised and with an annoying loud mouth cutesy girl. I'll give it 2 episodes.

very sad story indeed.

Menma is dead, and has been imagined by the closest of the group.

pretty surprising Poppo managed to keep the group shelter all those years.

i feel things will be even more sadder as we learn more about the death of Menma and all.

wish we still have anime's like this!

I've seen this show a couple times already but what's with the awkwardness in the first couple minutes? It's way too sexual and distracts from the main theme of the show which begins to present itself later in the episode.

Seriously the first couple minutes of this show makes it hard for me to get people into it. My friends probably think I'm dumb when I persuade them to watch this show describing it as extremely sad yet good - meanwhile they're watching Jintan get a hard on as Menma sits on top of him in the fucking opening scene.

Worst scene of the anime by far.

I watched this episode last night. The re-broadcasting has started in the Kanto District (including Tokyo) on TV.
The opening theme song has changed. And also that movie.

Ah, so this anime is the source of that stunning music in the ED.

Interesting first ep. It shocked me hard when Menma and Anaru interacted with each other. I haven't warmed up to the characters introduced yet but there's plenty more to go. It has a good rhythm with the show drip feeding what happened in the past.

Damn, that was sad but an interesting start. Menma's death triggered Jintan's personality by isolating himself from the real world and his childhood friends gave him some harsh words when they interact with him. Such some childhood flashbacks just gave me some feels for Menma's accident.

Then a ghost Menma appears in his eyes, will watch to see how the story goes. I sense some.... sadness coming up in later episodes.

This times 10. How the in the world can you possibly have a "good" character who is supposed to represent innocence when you sexualize her moments in for a really cheap, unnecessary, and crude "joke"? Riiiiiight. That makes me really connect to and sympathize with the characters. Remember, we the writers may be objectifying her, but you're supposed to see her as a totally feeling and caring 3-dimensional being. Yep. Makes perfect sense.

If this were meant to be your run of the mill anime, okay, annoying and eye roll worthy, but I guess it's expected and we can overlook it. But this is often touted as being a really emotional drama that aspires to dealing with real-life issues. Real-life...sure...whatever you say...

Needless to say, I don't need to see more. If I want real, genuine "true-to-life" drama with great characters and writing, I'll go watch Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.

I don't remember this scene being jarring in any way, but I just want to say that this anime is about a group of friends who are on the verge of leaving childhood behind, but are clinging on to the final fragment of their innocence. I personally felt that the awkward tension of sexuality that undercurrents their interactions was fitting.

All right, I might buy that except A) The scene in question is literally done for cheap laughs, not to make a profound point and B) that scene just doesn't work in the context you indicate.

After all, the ghost is of a little girl who died years ago. If she's supposed to represent that childhood the rest are leaving and be a symbol of innocence, she shouldn't ever be used in conjunction with a cheap sexual gag. By showing her as a root of sexual expression, it muddies the message and essentially says none of them were ever innocent to begin with, which based on the fact that the ghost girl is shown as overly good and cutesy, I can't imagine the ironic realization of "none of us is innocent" is the point. There's no separation. It'd be far more effective to show the older characters struggling with sexual or romantic overtones, and by contrast, always show young ghost girl as purely a form of friendship and as a symbol for childhood ideas and perceptions, because the point is she's no longer of this world and they have to move on. So any interaction with her should be devoid of sexual allusions to make her an effective symbol of lost childhood.

So nope. As regards this scene, I don't buy that explanation. It comes a few minutes in purely to try and lure in the ecchi lovers and get them to watch the show, rather than to make some poignant statement. As someone who appreciates stories that deal with hard issues, that heavy-handed means of audience pandering I find offensive.

It's a pity that you would drop what is widely considered a great anime over 1 petty scene in the first episode.

Holy shit, that anime have such a dark and gloomy atmosphere... :(

While it have his funny moment, the fact that Jin-tan is such a loser today is so depressing. It look like he suffered from a lot of depression and anxiety problem. The way the old ladies were looking at him was disgusting. There is still too much disregard against people who suffer from mental illness. Myself I suffer from some mental illness, but I never had that kind of problem. Though, I know some people that were completely isolated mostly because society wouldn't accept them. So Jin-tan situation hit really close to home...

Maybe I'm not looking in the right direction, but it look like that day Menma died left a lot of problem unsolved. From what I can analyse right, in that ''reunion'' or whatever it was, there was some tension in the group. First, the way Anjou asked that question, she seemed jealous, so she was probably in love with Jin-tan. Yukiatsu also seemed jealous and the way Tsuruko said that saying the name Menma doesn't leave him indifferent make me think that he was in love with Menma. Now Jin-tan seemed to have feeling for Menma, but maybe not romantic feeling nor he didn't know. You know, boys at that age doesn't really think about that kind of stuff :P

Now, it look like Poppo is the one that will bring them together again. Maybe Jin-tan will start to see Poppo again and they'll gradually meet their past group again.

At first, I wasn't sure if Menma was ''real'', but since she can interract with human and object (moving them, etc...), I guess she's really ''there''. The main plot look a bit like Angel Beat, having to achieve a dream/wish. I wonder what that wish will be. Maybe that the group never separate or something like this?

Anyway, that first episode was really interresting. I'm not really too fond into adolescent drama, but if it's done well and maturely, it can be really interresting. We're not obligated to be a teen to love that kind of thing, we all passed by that stage ;)

Wow, that would actually be pretty interesting, having your own personal buddy who exists but at the same time doesn't exist. They have their own mind and can interact physically with the world, but you're the only one who can see and hear them. They're there to talk to whenever you want, and have their own feelings.

It would be pretty annoying in certain situations, but it would still be awesome nonetheless. I want a Menma now.

It's only the first episode, and it's already this sad? ._.

I didn't cry or anything... but that was really sad.

Don't feel like analyzing much, but it seems that Menma is supposed to be an actual ghost rather than a hallucination. As far as Jinta is concerned, though, she may as well be. It's sad that he's ended up so run-down because of it.

Feh. This could definitely end up being a tearjerker.
