'It is to be hoped that no one will suppose that the ballots of an electorate which is anything else than brilliant will give rise to statesmen by the hundreds. Altogether we cannot be too sharp in condemning the absurd notion that geniuses can be born from general elections. In the first place, a nation only produces a real statesman once in a blue moon and not a hundred or more at once; and in the second place, the revulsion of the masses for every outstanding genius is positively instinctive. Sooner will a camel pass through a needle's eye than a great man be "discovered" by an election'.
- Adolf Hitler [Mein Kampf: Volume I, Chapter 3]
'Man is what he is, a wild animal with the will to survive, and (so far) the ability, against all competition. Unless one accepts that, anything one says about morals, war, politics—you name it—is nonsense. Correct morals arise from knowing what man is—not what do-gooders and well-meaning old Aunt Nellies would like him to be'.
- Starship Troopers [Robert A. Heinlein]
'The existence of the state is the presence of God upon the earth'.
- Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
'And I said in my heart: If the death of the fool and mine shall be one, what doth it avail me, that I have applied myself more to the study of wisdom? And speaking with my own mind, I perceived that this also was vanity'.
- Ecclesiastes 2:15
'Arrogance on the part of the meritorious is even more offensive to us than the arrogance of those without merit: for merit itself is offensive'.
- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, 'Menschliches, Allzumenschliches: Ein Buch für freie Geister (1880)'
'I know of no country in which there is so little independence of mind and real freedom of discussion as in America'.
- Alexis de Tocqueville, 'De La Démocratie en Amérique (1840)'
'A prince, therefore, must not mind incurring the charge of cruelty for the purpose of keeping his subjects united and confident; for, with a very few examples, he will be more merciful than those who, from excess of tenderness, allow disorders to arise, from whence spring murders and rapine; for these as a rule injure the whole community, while the executions carried out by the prince injure only one individual'.
- Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli, 'De Principatibus (1532)'
'According to the Marxist interpreters of the "Phänomenologie" there will be no art in communist society.
Beauty will be lived and no longer imagined'.
- L'Homme révolté (1951)
'Republics, on the other hand, have more life in them, more hatred and a greater thirst for revenge'.
- Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli, 'De Principatibus (1532)'

I probably should have considered that, but I'm not too disappointed with the jokes they used in Nisekoi and, like you said, the language differences probably played a part. I just didn't like the re-use of quite a few jokes, as opposed to something different.
The Slice of Life Club will be hosting a Cute Competition for the next seven weeks. It's pretty much going to be the same thing as our Moe Competition, except for the fact that characters from overly popular series weren't allowed in the contest (since they always win). It's time to give other cute girls a chance to shine. There are four different groups with 32 girls in each group. One girl from each group will go on as a finalist to face off against each other in two championship rounds. Our winner and finalists will get a special card edition in their honor and a spot on the club's layout.

As you can see, we have quite the long lineup of girls for our first round. Half of them will be eliminated after this round, though, so please vote to help us decide who stays and who goes!
P.S. Due to the club having so many members, we aren't able to send out newsletters to all of our members. If you would like to receive newsletters from the Slice of Life Club, post here.
Our newsletters include notifications on when our competition rounds start, club event information, information on our monthly banner contest (new feature starting in September), news about updates and changes to the club, etc.
P.S.S We are in need of active card makers!
We do a few monthly editions and we really need some more card makers to help out with those. If you are interested in applying, click here.
I guess much depends on personal taste. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware that fanservice is, how you put it, "an integral part of Japanese Otaku culture". That said, I, simply and personally, don't enjoy it much, especially when it's used to compensate for the lack of an actual plot. Again, as I've clearly stated in the review, it's just my personal opinion and eventually, merely a matter of preferences.

If you don't want to join, of course you don't have to, but if you're interested, we'll welcome you with open arms :-D
