Man this episode is crazy! I feel like the plot is already there, but it hasn't surfaced all the way. So i'm still kind of like "Wtf this is so random" but in a good way.

It looks like the villains were introduced, and their leader looks like he is apart of the KKK.

I do hope they explain the mechanics of the world, because I'm pretty confused when it comes to the transforming, and other things.

Thrown into planetary orbit by a dark spiderwitchevilthingoflust, then landing directly on said creature? Oh yeah, that's certainly something. A new, surreal world each episode, with a theme and (probably) meaning behind? Ah yes, I'm definitely in for this.

So... Uh, it seems that episode 3 hints towards the fragment thingies being related to sexual/sensual desire/feelings/lust. At least the [wtich] girl was a representative for that, and her and Cocona's behavior during the attempt at fragment stealing quite clearly was.

And in said episode, things got real dark and damnedly interesting.
Cocona being without much of an identity was clearly stated, previously shown through her absence of ability to choose a school to attend.
Also, there appears to be other adventurers - cruel ones too - or might the dark girl have been a native of that surreal world? Hm. She was bored, hinting towards having been there for some time...
Oh my, now even more of dem other guys showed up, finishing off the [witch] and taking its orb of [something mysterious and powerful] - instead of being kind and giving it to our pair. The cult of KKK-like guys appear to be their employers, needing the orbs for something, while the guys our pair are connected with seem to be opposing the cult.

Orbs and fragments. Fragments are found by adventurers, owned by adventurers, wanted by [witches]. Orbs are the cores of [witches], wanted by the cult and hunted by adventurers. Adventurers compete for orbs, it may seem - that trio gave it to the cult, so this seems more like a conflict between factions.

Swapping hair color, and the similarity of their suits, is a great way to signify them being a closely related pair. (the hints at mutual love too, of course) The cult [leader] called them the [something] halves of the [something] Drive (?). Okay, they are definitely important then. And predestined to be.

And, uh, oh my, those that transformation scenes did show some skin, no, shove it into your face. The series in general has had some "fanservice" 'till now, but this episode ramped it up quite a bit. I hope this thing doesn't emphasis their assets much more.

A last note: Please, people, why do you need to connect this with drug-induced hallucinating so often? It dominates too many of the Crunchyroll comments, at least. This is indeed absurd, but there is no need for people to be on drugs or be mentally ill for stuff like this to be thought up. Seriously. And there definitely are clues to what is going on, and quite a lot at that. (I hope this doesn't sound all too disdainful)

Precure, Gainax, Ken parody, etc. - this episode was packed and an amazign mix of all the right ingredients. And unlike other shows that try their hands on a complex narrative, this is def. more on the FLCL than the Concrete Revolutio side and better for it.

I can forgive the crappy characters and lack of a plot as long as they keep giving us interesting worlds and great animation. And I actually like that this show doesn't bother to explain anything or you know...make any sense. Unfettered nonsense can often have the most room to spread it's artistic wings.

Mad Max!!! and the KKK guys remind me of Hellsing Ultimate. So far it seems like there are two competing organizations to obtain that stuff from inside Pure Illusion. And Cocona and Papika are two very special agents with a unique power. Hopefully we find out soon what the stuff they obtain is used for.... Did they mention that already, I'm drawing the biggest blank.

first off, holy sexuality. i thought this was a kids show. the sexual context with that chick that looks like meruem from hunterxhunter surprised me.
2nd off, the fight scene between cocona and papika was amazing.
it was so intense and so awesome.
3rdly, those transformations!!!
and finally,

Also, i'm obsessed with the twins' voices. their voices are so soft.
Overall, by far my most favorite episode. 2nd ep had me for the visuals and colors
but the action and humor in this really stood out.

This week was much more entertaining than the first two I must say, if only by virtue virtue of being a pure sakuga festival. I'm also glad the show did change its formula and proposed a more busy and action-packed episode, which I believe suits the style of this series a lot better than the more contemplative approach adopted in previous episodes. Pure Illusion really seems like a world that was made to be actively and constantly interacted with, so it's only natural that Cocona and Papika's adventures would become wilder and wilder as the story progresses. I still have no idea where said story is supposed to take us, nor am I particularly invested in our two magical main girls at the moment, but I'm nevertheless eager to see what else the staff (especially the animators) have in store for us.

@HaiiroTama
@Everyone who apparently has their brain turned off

This show IS far from nonsensical/incoherent/incomprehensible. I don't understand why you and so many people are having trouble grasping the simple and basic concepts.

One girl is a school girl who is living within a shell of herself. Being the ideal girl/student, basically living the sheep life. Another girl, who presumably grew up in a lab/research group or was (partially) created by a lab/research group, is searching for a partner. This partner is needed for her to explore the world of pure illusion. Several of the details of this have not been revealed yet, obviously, but this is basic fantasy/mahou shoujo stuff. The second girl breaks the first out of her shell, etc, etc.

Now, the world of pure illusion represents a dream-like world. It is quite possibly even another dimension, etc. Basically, it is detached from the other world. These girls can't become "magical" in the normal world (where the story begins). They only become "magical" in the world of illusion. Basically, like a lucid dream dimension. Each time they enter, it is a different world, as dreams are different each time. They are gathering these crystals/gems/whatever to bring back to their research group. Their use is unknown at this time. There is now a rival organization also searching for these gems.

The world of illusion idea gives all of these animators the freedom to create their own dream-like stories, universes, art, animation, references, etc. It is artistic freedom in an industry that restricts it so much.

I mean, seriously everyone. This shit is extremely easy to follow. Enjoy the illusion ride and we will see how the other elements tie-in.

This show is an awesome burst of creative energy, and this was the best episode yet. I like the diversity of environments that Pure Illusion provides. So far every chapter has been so fun to watch due largely to the personality each of these worlds has. The amount of interesting and wacky characters introduced in this episode alone would fill half an average series' runtime, yet here they're delivered in just twenty frenetic minutes. Pure Illusion = Pure entertainment.

They're revealing just enough of the overall plot to provide some intrigue, but really, they can unravel it as slowly as they want as long as the individual anecdotes remain this charming.

Man for a second there I thought I had missed an episode but I caught on pretty quickly, overall I thought it was really colourful and fun. I'm really loving the animation style, it's so vibrant. We got to see the villains for the first time + the transformation sequences which was cool. Not to mention Papika told Cocona that she loves her, I'm looking forward to seeing how their relationship will evolve.

Thank you for reminding @Everyone (RIP in pieces poor lad/lass who'll get ping'd outta nowhere) of the bare bones of the story that everyone and their dog probably already caught on. Obviously I'm not completely excluding the possibility that I might be wrong, but I'd wager what most people here consider random is the actual content of all these expedition to Pure Illusion, which, believe it or not, does represent a pretty darn significant part of the show.

Note that it doesn't in itself necessarily constitute a criticism, as more and more about the world and the different factions within it may (and probably will) be explained in the future and the very whimsical and abstract vibes the show gives are definitely part of its appeal, but so far I'd say the comments about the randomness of each vignette we've been presented thus far are perfectly warranted.

In general this reminds me a lot of Space Dandy (in that its about a group of people traveling to other worlds to collect, and that every episode is different from the last). Helps that the animation director(?) for this worked on that series as well.

Holy crap this episode actually was pretty mad max but even more!, it's like if you put sailor moon mad max dragon ball z and kill la kill all in one episode

i loved the fight animation was waiting for a real fight.

And i guess it's safe to say this is kinda a tone shift i'm sure there will be some more carefree adventures but that one scene when concoa got the mask put on her was unexpected bit more intense than what you would think is a kids show at first glance.

Flip Flappers keeps surprising me i'm just gonna think of it as Kyousou Giga where it won't make a lot of sense till the end if they actually do the story right.

Holy shit, some of the monsters in this series are more hideous than I had thought.

The fighting felt pretty colorful and ecstatic, almost gave me a Kill la Kill-like feel. Papika is awesome but the beating she took was painful to watch especially since it was against her friend controlled by the mask. Glad Papika made a nice return at the right place at the right time though!

Kokona and Papika make a good team. My favorite episode so far from this series.

It should be. It seems like those fragments allow them to reshape reality to some extend within "Pure Illusion". Somehow it's like kids play-fighting with their imagination, with whatever they can come up with... except with an actual physical manifestation of said imagination. I guess "Pure Delusion" would be more descriptive of those worlds, as I understand it anyway.

I thought this was ok. It wasn't nearly as great as the first two episodes were. The pacing felt significantly faster, and I felt like I had skipped an episode at times. It started out fine, but it started to become really random and stupid. The magical girl transformation came the hell out of nowhere and completely caught me off guard, as they have never done that before but acted as if they had. Even the fighting seemed to be more of "flashes moving around the sky" and less sakuga. That being said, I love the dynamic between Cocona and Papika, and the allusion to a darker and more emotional conflict between them intrigues me a lot. Yayaka working for the KKK is also an interesting plot point. When the fighting was good, IT WAS REALLY GOOD, and the animation is always fluid and energetic. The art is also captivating. While I don't think this episode lived up to the standard set by the first two, I'm still loving this show and I can't wait to see where it goes.
