I'm just being nit-picky because these mobile suits are always being shown with their thrusters on, when in actuality it would be better to cut them once you achieved your desired output.

"Inertial navigation" is only used effectively in long distances. It makes no sense for them to turn off their thrusters for short distances.

I liked this episode, survival in space was interesting.

Also filtered urine.

I'm pretty surprised no one died this episode, this show has not a care in the world when it comes to killing someone off it seems like.

Sidonia no Kishi is definitely the surprise of the season, and think that I would not follow it. Too bad it will only have 12 episodes and we're already halfway.

Why is this so good, even with fanservice shots and silly romance. I inevitably fell in love with this show so I'm fine with everything that tries to accomplish. Not that I mean it was bad, but I usually don't enjoy it in these kinds of anime.

That was one big ass formation... Didn't expected that defense team to go save them. I guess they owe him their lifes after all, if he hadn't defeated the Gauna, those inexperimented soldier would have had to go fight or at least slow an enemy they don't even know.

Nagate is such a fucking boss, waging his life for Hoshijiro. Well, not that she isn't worth it... ;)

I don't know if Nagase is in watersport but if yes, he must have been fulfilled xD

Anyway, it was really oddly romantic, two souls lost in space. Izana will be mad by how close they are now :P

Well I have to wonder if it's really necessary to go full nude for photosynthesis, and urine filteration in that skin tight suit (where? o.o) is convenient. But I like the development. There's romantic vibes for sure, but nothing explicit and I'm glad for that.

The Hive structures... hm, I wonder if they are Guana nests? Haha, we'll see. That episode flew past and even though I feel like nothing happened, alot of character and plot building was done.

At first I thought the 4 or 5-mech configuration was simply to create stability in the system, and make for simpler more efficient cruise stages, especially if the engines are all synchronized. You are essentially converting several loose mechs into one ship. It wasn't necessarily faster, just easier and possibly more fuel efficient if it reduces the need for course and attitude correction while cruising. The effect would have diminishing returns though, and a 256-mech ring would probably be more unstable than an individual. So it probably has something to do with the fictional drive system they're using.

Anyway, I don't see what the big deal is with the filtered urine scene. If I was in space and had such a system in place, I'd be using it *constantly* to stretch my limited water supply as long as possible. Survival situations are no time to be squeamish.

On a related note, Wichita Falls, TX has just installed a sewage recycling system on their city water supply which returns treated sewage from that city back into the system (it's very clean). If, however, drinking someone else's filtered pee is some kind of intimate and/or romantic act, then the phrase "Love thy neighbor" is going to have a whole different meaning in Wichita Falls...

Episode really good, does not look like an episode of transition, the whole narrative is useful to the story and there are no actions taken at random, but they are all reasoned.
Excellent screenplay, the plot and the CG, a little annoying.
Another episode that I was not disappointed.
Opening very good idea, I do not tire of saying it. OST equally good.
In a dangerous situation as one in which the two protagonists find themselves, I do not think I would be the idea of having sex, when there is more to think about.
Maybe that idea I would after being saved. ;)
I await the next installment with even more interest! * w *

They mentioned something about Higgs interference when Nagate attacked the cannon Gauna, so I was thinking it had something to do with that. Maybe those engines are slightly similar to warp engines in that they create some kind of propulsion 'field' that gets proportionally more powerful as more energy is supplied. And if not, I could live with it; that ring was just too awesome to dislike.

I didn't like the infodump, the manga handled that way better. They didn't even mention the Gauna in the Swiss cheese alien structure, which I thought was pretty odd; they just showed the kabi destroying it, without mentioning their dead teammates or anything. I hope they revisit this scene later on :p

All the rest was very well handled, I loved the "fanservice". Who knew that drinking someone's filtered urine could be so hawt :3 Loved how Hoshijiro was talking away and Nagate' was just sleeping, the guy really has a gift for that. But
"Though mountains crack, and ice will thaw

Though walls will fall, to tooth and claw

Though stars will fade, and shadow spread

I expected a line instead of a ring, too. It's not like they have to hold hands all the time, they could simply make sure no one is lost due to running out of full or losing sight. That formation was justified through looking awesome alone though.

And whats the problem with not having 256 cells? It's not like they'll get a life sentence. If, they would simply throw them out instead. Throw in several into one cell, let them stay there a week, next shift. And there are other means of punishment available, too.

Marathoned till this episode! The 256 Gardes and their thrust T.T was awesome.
Nagate and Hoshijiro time spent inside Tsugumori ^^ The blushing and the urine filtering!
The defense Gardes going to look for them since he saved Sidonia!
That preview... more time spent together, hope this isn't another one of the "give the person some background before killing her" :O, yea I wouldn't want that too >.<
"Salute" as next episode's title doesn't sound to bright though.
Quite glad that I am watching this.

It's not to make sure they don't get lost, it's about getting more bang for your buck in terms of fuel efficiency. Supposedly it's more productive to travel long distances together in a ring formation. I don't know the science behind this and can't say whether it's realistic or not. I'm sure some space/physics geek could testify to its validity.

Hoshijiros blushing was because she was peeing ? CUTE! XD

I was thinking Nagate would have less food because he ate it on missions, because he was scared to eat so much in front of ppl at sidonia because they bullied him.
I WAS WRONG. :P

I am surprised they let one kabizashi be lost in space. They have only 28 to keep themselves alive with, and struggled to defeat the first bad guy they encounter lol.
Bad tactic IMO, but whatever.

I think maybe the Gauna which took the guardian piloted by one of the elite four in the previous episode, it used this frame to assimilate an organic hyggs cannon for itself.
( the cannon was gross looking and reminded me of a penis kinda [sadface] but of an alien body YUCK )
It already showed to take on the form of the girl it consumed, I don't think my idea is far fetched.

It was so fuuuing cool when Nagate destroyed that gauna though.

I was kinda hoping both Nagate and Hoshijiro would die or be destroyed by a gauna or something but this result is also okay I guess.

I'd say it's just a mecha trope in general. In Gundam, for an example, the mechas also always have their thrusters at full power, even when in space. Not really a big deal.

I think people will tend to be way more picky on those particular details with Sidonia than Gundam type of shows because the hard sci-fi aspect is not nearly as present in the latter than it seems to be in the former. Agree with you than in one case or the other it really is no biggie, tho.

Anyway, another great episode. What the hell was I doing avoiding this show ? It's easily one of my season favorites.

Some thoughts on the supply problem. In that situation it is quite strange that water became a concern. I mean they're both in space suits with water filtering systems and in the sealed cockpit, so with their technology the loss of water should be very small - instead it should all be reused and filtered.
On the other hand oxygen is often a bigger concern, at least I'm not well aware of possible technologies to convert CO2 to oxygen easily. So in my view they should have been short on oxygen and food, but not on water.
Aside of that strange fact I liked that photosynthesis and urine fetish thing. Overall it's a very nice series, nice scifi and nice plot, I like it more then others for the past few years.

I can understand dumb space physics stuff like caring about distance instead of speed, because that's how the physics of the world most people live in works.

But sticking 256 of the same vehicle together and thereby going way faster/further/whatever than one of said vehicle could alone? Can you imagine doing that with cars and having it work? Is it meant to be some kind of magic with the hyggs...

Actually the Higgs Boson is what gives things mass so maybe a giant pile of robots with lots of mass could do something.

Your analogy with cars is moot. Space is not land, and the propulsion systems for spacecraft and cars are vastly different. Sidonia's technology is obviously more advanced than ours, and it may not even have the same physics as our universe. How does their "photosynthesis" work? Why do they have such a shoddy system of rails and cables to counteract sudden acceleration? What's the point of humanoid mecha in space? Perhaps these "Hyggs" particles are less Higgs-Boson and more Minovsky, and works in the same way Minovsky particles define the fictional physics of the UC Gundam universe. There's no point in questioning science-fiction unless it contradict its own universe. Which, in Sidonia's case, is anything but extensive, and thus there is no need for any other explanation than "it just works". You can impose their actions in our physical universe, but don't let it detract from the experience, unless that is your goal.

Actually, yes. I realize that there would be certain drawbacks, but as long as they're able to brace themselves they could work around it. Sex in zero G is hardly a subject that's unknown to the sci-fi genre. I suppose having sex would use up a large amount of energy, but they could at least get naked and cuddle a bit. Cuddling would actually help them conserve energy, since they'd be sharing warmth.

BTW, as far as the reasoning behind such a huge ring of mecha acting in concert, there's a number of advantages to such a formation:

-First, while there is a lot more mass to accelerate, each is adding their own acceleration to a sum total. Then once they reached cruising speed, they could just let themselves coast until they needed to correct course. Granted, Sidonia for the most part seems to forget that in space you don't need to operate under constant thrust in order to fly.
-Second, all the mechas wouldn't need to fire their boosters at once, the rest could just get dragged along. This would greatly increase the amount of fuel available.
-Third, it just looks cool.

Just finished ep6 of Ping Pong and I was left with a new feeling. I may have felt it before, but if so, then it must have been such a long time ago. And then here comes ep5 of Sidonia.

Anime, what do you want me to feel, huh?

Now I'm starting to support Hoshijiro and Tanikaze goddamnit. This harem, it's too good to be true. If there was anything good about FFVIII (even though I never played more than 2 hours of it, but I remember seeing it being played and saw a lot of stuff like the space part), it would be the romance involved in space. I have no fond memories or gaming memories alone with FFVIII to leave much of an impression in me, but that's what made me think. Squall and Rinoa (not sure if it was both of just Rinoa), and Tanikaze and Hoshijiro.

It was fucking sweet. SO MANY RED FACES.

AND PEE!

PEE FETISH OH YES!

FINALLY this show is starting to pick up, right after the pee drinking. My god. So many emotions all in one situation:

• the fear and despair of being adrift in space, they truly tried to give us an idea of what it would be like;

• "wtf is going on" because of nakedness (but I guess photosynthesising is such a perfect excuse....huh......at this point, I thought they'd start having sex but then use your brains retard, they're trying to conserve energy. 0-G sex would also be highly....unpleasurable.....);

• "oh my god they're so sweet together" because of Hoshijiro and her, ah GAD;

• and of course, erection time because of pee drinking and seeing her reaction.

By this point, I am already absolutely used to the 3fps. Shit's like FREEDOM all over again. This whole romance thing going on, I could start getting attached to this.

Drinking urine isn't that shocking in fiction IMO. If you've read Dune, you should recall that the Fremen's stillsuits do the exact same thing - they collect urine/sweat/moisture and recycle it back to the wearer.

I kinda cracked up at the filtered urine part. Well anyway glad that they rescued them after 10+ days.

They live in a multi-generational space ship and recycle everything. They drink (recycled) pee all the time, and since human bodies are also recycled they're only a couple of energy exchanges away from Soylent Green. Maybe it's impolite in that society to mention it, but every bit of organic material has been reused and circulated through the ecosystem many times. (As is largely the case here on earth but the complexity of our ecosystem has thus far allowed us to ignore this--but maybe not for much longer.)
