i had the same feeling about Air the first time i watched it, but you have to see it like 2 times to understand and love it, my friend loves air so much and kept bombing me with WATCH IT, i finally did and my opinion ws exactly the same as yours.
i couldnt figure out why he thought it was so amazing, so i thought the problem lied with me, so i watched it again and tried to understand it. i loved it alot more than the first time.
i used to have Kanon 2006 with a 9 rating and i thought it was way better than Air, but when i rewatched it i realy loved it (watched air like 4 times now) i ultimately reduced the score of kanon to 8, and now im thinking of giving Air a 9.
if you finally get it and get into the vibe its a realy wonderfull series

But it looks like you've only ever responded to 2 of those 17 comments. I can understand why you don't have any more.
While I can't say I hate or even dislike them or the anime produced, I know what you mean with the overrating issue.
I mean, Shaft is kind of cool for the experimental art directing, but I personally feel that gets in the way of the anime sometimes. Ef is a perfect example, at least in my opinion.
