So, we are almost at the end of 2023 now. Let's talk about Anime of the Year for 2023. This will not be a poll or popularity contest. Instead, share the anime you've enjoyed most this year.

You can pick two anime. Can be ongoing or finished.
[1] Anime you've enjoyed (Must be released in 2023)
[2] Anime you've enjoyed (Release date doesn't matter)

My AOTY would be,
[1] Sousou no Frieren - This was so much unique. No isekai bullshit, and we've got a proper fantasy anime which is also very good after so long. Has some of the best animations, soundtracks too.

[2] Link Click - I love its storytelling. Every episode had such an interesting ending, and some scenes legit made me cry. Haven't seen the 2nd season, but this is one of the best one I've seen this year.

I don't have a clear choice, there was nothing extremely outstanding this year. If I should pick one it would be out of the three anime I rated 8/10-s this year:

1. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) ... it is still ongoing, so it is not perfectly clear right now how good it will be in the end

2. Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion)

and the third one a bit lower on the shelf but maybe the most relaxing of all:

3. Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu (The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today)

One of these three.

I can already sense that so many people (myself included) will say either Frieren, Oshi no Ko, or Pluto.

Anyway, I’m picking Frieren and Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru.

I feel like I have seen this thread already.

For now mine are Pluto and NieR:Automata ver1.1a, but there are still...six more titles (and a non anime series) that I want to watch.

Oh wait you said the most enjoyed, and not exclusively from this year, I misunderstood.

Nier:Automata ver1.1 first, I'm not sure about the second, there were a bunch that I enjoyed almost equally, maybe it's Ghost Hound, maybe Kizumonogatari, maybe Figure 17, maybe The Ravages of Time, it's hard for me to tell.

My top 3 anime of the year are:

  1. Sousou no Frieren - Loved the manga and the anime has only improved upon it. Everything about it is just perfect, from the animation to the voice acting to the beautiful soundtrack. So happy with how it turned out.
  2. Vinland Saga S2 - Absolutely incredible. It really takes balls to change a story this much but man the author pulled it off.
  3. Bungou Stray Dogs S4/5 - The best the show has been. So much going on, I can't wait for the next season. It's caught up to the manga now though so it'll be a while but better to wait than get something rushed.

Honourable mentions, no particular order:

  • One Piece - The end of the Wano Arc and the Kaido fight were so good. I caught up to the last 120-ish episodes back in August and it's just the best it's ever been.
  • Tengoku Daimakyou - Loved this show until the last couple episodes. I'll still watch another season of it but I am not a fan of where the story went.
  • Oshi no Ko - I enjoyed it. First episode was the best though. The opening was a banger.
  • JJK S2 - It's been great even with all the production issues, I just enjoyed S1 a whole lot more.
  • Eminence in Shadow S2 - Love this show, it's so much fun. S1 was great and S2 is just more of that.
  • Spy x Family S2 - More SxF is good SxF. Seeing the cruise arc go more into Yor's character was nice.
  • AoT Ending - Wish it hadn't been so split up, it kinda killed the momentum, but it was a good ending overall. I had expected so much worse.
  • 100GF - One of my favourite manga and it's been great seeing the reactions to this crazy series. Especially after the most recent episode.
  • Dead Mount Death Play - A really solid series from the author of Baccano! and Durarara!!
  • Zom 100 - Had an amazing start but got screwed over by production issues.
  • Undead Girl Murder Farce - Fun supernatural detective show. The final werewolf village arc wasn't great though.
  • Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia - A much more grounded high school romance. I should finish the manga at some point.
  • Dr Stone S3 - More great Dr Stone, with revelations about the incident that ended the world. Most recent episodes were great, it actually got me more hyped than JJK.
  • Danmachi S4P2 - The most threatening the dungeon has been. This season got really intense.

from everything ive watched this year i would say its either frieren or vinland saga s2.

Hm: Apothecary diaries (although i would like to see more to see if it gets even better or the quality of the story drops), oshi no ko

I also want to show love to dangers in my heart, its not the best anime ive seen this year but it was pretty good.

For me the top spot is a tie between Tokyo Revengers s3, Attack On Titan final season part 3, and The Apothecary Diaries

Close seconds Oshi no Ko and Buddy Daddies

Vinland Saga s2 and it's not really close.

Pluto was the best new series though.

This felt like a pretty average year, but there was some great stuff.

I really enjoyed:
Hikari no Ou
Tengoku Daimakyou
Gundam: Witch from Mercury Season 2
Second Half of Golden Kamuy Season 4
Dark Gathering
Migi and Dali

Of these, I guess my pick for the "best" one would be Tengoku Daimakyou, but for reasons that I won't say the show is not for everyone. There is graphic content that many would not enjoy.

Only 2?

Winter 2023 - Buddy daddies (I enjoyed this one, so yeah I gladly mention it here) / Handyman Saitou in Another World (I rate this 5 Maderakas)

Spring 2023 - Mashle / Edens Zero (FR it is good, a tad annoying to see some core characters being similar to the character design in Fairy Tail, BUT even so, Edens Zero has it's own DNA & it's great. I only hope Fairy Tail 1000year quest doesn't get dropped or delayed because of the development of Edens Zero. I want both to progress steadily)

Summer 2023 - Mushoku Tensei II (a tad boring on the story progress department, but even with that, the storytelling is just captivating. will continue watching Rudeus being a Pervy Sage) / Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Separation

Fall 2023 - Spy x Family Season 2 (it keeps being good, the cruise episodes were cool where Yor took the main spot) / Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023) (a very good remake, loyal to the manga, good art, good VA's, this is made with love & care)

AOTY = 1) Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Separation, the hype is surreal, nothing beats this.
2) Mashle, I found this F funny and I love comedy. It's like One Punch Man goes to Harry Potter magic school
I don't know who quotes me and then deletes the comment, but know that you make my day.

In line with my usual disclaimer, I'll reiterate, as always, that I will not be including second (or any later number) seasons of the same series from series which started in different, earlier years when answering this question. Since for ratings and rankings with these type of questions and list-making, I like counting those series just once under the original year in which they started.

In addition to new series, I watched and completed or am in the process of watching (for those still airing): Don't Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro season 2, Vinland Saga season 2, Mahoutsukai no Yome season 2, Mushoku Tensei season 2, Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story season 2, By the Grace of the Gods season 2, Shiguang Dailiren season 2, Arknights season 2, Goblin Slayer season 2, and Saihate no Paladin season 2.

But I'm not putting any of those in the running.

For new series, far and away for it's both Tengoku Daimakyou and AI no Idenshi significantly above all others.

So:

1.) Tengoku Daimakyou
2.) AI no Idenshi

For the two.

My Top 5 would probably look like this:

1.) Tengoku Daimakyou - 7/10
2.) AI no Idenshi - 8/10
3.) Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon - 7/10
4.) Hikari no Ou - 7/10
5.) Handyman Saitou in Another World - 7/10 (probably; haven't formally rated it yet as I still have a few more episodes to go)

Most other new series I've watched are 6/10-tier and a few 5/10s.

I'm also presently excluding ongoing/still airing series from that consideration though. Of those, the one most likely to dethrone an existing entry and seize one of the slots (in something like a top five list) is The Apothecary Diaries, but I wouldn't feel comfortable placing or even mock-rating that yet until much closer toward the end.

Here are my AOTY contenders, ordered roughly:
Vinland Saga Season 2
Oniichan wa Oshimai!
Pluto
"Oshi no Ko"

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season - Kanketsu-hen
