carolina-ya said: Aslan from Banana Fish comes to my mind tbh it's way more than hinted Well, first you have the obvious and caricatural "flamboyant" characters (like in Gintama, Tokyo Ghoul, Kakushigoto, I'd also propose : - Darius from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (he blushed when his bottom was mistakenly grabbed by Roy Mustang in the 4-komas) - Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji (they're actually LGBT+, but because of chinese censorship it's only implicit) - literally every young man in Barakamon...according to Tamako. - some characters often use gay innuendos jokes in Fruits Basket, maybe some of them are LGBT+ indeed ? - Minare in "Nami yo Kiitekure" often jokes about marrying her coworker because she's so great - Bulat in "Akame ga kill" is explicitly gay (not that it really matters in the story anyways) - Tsugumi Aozora in "Asobi Asobase" - many characters in "Carole & Tuesday" - Azusa Hamaoka in "Grand Blue" (well, it's not hinted because she describes herself as bi) - Hisoka in Hunter x Hunter :] - Squalo and Tiziano in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5 : Golden Wind" - Jolyne Kujoh in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6 : Stone Ocean" And I'm pretty sure there are more of them |

I totally thought of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune being "cousins" in the English Dub. Grell from Black Butler could be considered because their gender identity isn't really known. Some people think Homura from Madoka Magica is LGBT+, but I'm personally on the fence about that one. |

I think Hunter x Hunter have great examples of this, perhaps. Pretty sure at least 4 characters are LGBT+. |

Every CGDCT or CBDCT character to be short, except the ones that are explicitly given hetero love interests (my current avatar is an example of the latter xD). Some cases are more clear than others and some are tackled in universe, but these shows tend to be very homoerotic in general. |

There are still a lot of them. It is often never explicitly mentioned but rather obvious, just look at "Free" where it was never mentioned that any of the characters are in fact gay but they are slashed madly. YURI!!! On Ice! is 100% BL and Victor and Yuuri quite obviously gay but so far the show has never made it official and plays it coy (which is fine as long as they don't fuck it up in the movie). Michiru and Haruka from Sailor Moon were obviously a couple but it was never really made official. Then there is also Kaworu from EVA who was also never explicitly gay but totally was. Then there is Kuroshitsuji (if Grell is not gay then I don't know who is). Ciel and Sebastian IMO are at least bi. Other shows: Tsurune, Hibike! Euphonium and Haikyuu! |

I don't do 'hints'. Unless someone's sexual orientation is made explicit I work under the assumption that there is a reason the show is focusing on other things, namely that those things are what the show is trying to do and why I watch it and if it wants to do something with romance or sexuality, it'll let me know. I don't have to look for it until it manifests itself out of thin air, like most of the mentions in this thread. No point in slapping sexuality labels onto every character under the sun as far as I'm concerned. I treat sexuality and sexual orientation in fiction as something that is irrelevant to the point of not existing in a lot of shows and I'm baffled how people project sexual orientations and fantasies onto a lot of these 'asexual' shows and their characters when they often focus on literally everything aside from romance/sexuality. And then selling it back to the rest of us as if the show aggressively hinted at it and I'm in denial for 'not seeing it'. "I mean obviously that guy was nice/an asshole to this other guy so that's a definite hint (either way) that they are hot for each other..." My point is that I don't believe in hints, that's just a word people use to make what they project onto a show sound more 'official', more like canon, when it just isn't. It makes sense to talk about hints AFTER something was confirmed, when you go back and watch the episodes before the confirmation whether they are hinting at what is to come. But it's not a hint to me, when there is never any confirmation and it's basically just someone interpreting too much into a scene/character. Because the truth is that if you keep looking you'll eventually find even things that aren't there, and this is how these 'hint' narratives come into existence, at least most of them. But I don't like to make assumptions when the show doesn't require me to do so (which they almost never do when it comes to sexual orientation - if it's relevant, the show will let you know. So as long as it's not explicit I usually just don't think about it, don't make assumptions, don't slap labels onto characters - because I simply don't care and I don't understand why almost everyone else seems to care so much to the point where labeling characters based on their assumed sexual orientation with as little valid information as possible is basically the modus operandi of the entire anime community. I could also rant about how annoying I find the obsession with sexuality labels IRL, where it's gotten so far that anyone who doesn't find a label they like is compelled to choose one or make one up, because people simply can't process reality, sexuality, themselves or other people without everything having a clear-cut label... But this is not the thread for that. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

Uhm, it is not really far-fetched to talk about "hints" when every aspect of Ash and Eiji's relationship in Banana Fish is romantic except the name itself, when the characters in Free constantly end up very close looking at each other's eyes, when Rin from Yuru Camp blushes at every instance Nadeshiko interacts with her and keeps observing her amusingly, when the main girls in Harukana Receive say that they are like a married couple or Ayasa backhugs Narumi. Not mentioning shows where characters directly state their sexuality because that's no longer a hint, it's fact and this thread is not about that. I understand your personal lack of interest in this kind of speculation, @Pullman, but you are making it look like it's pulled out of nowhere and honestly you don't need to even be a shipper to feel that yes, maybe they want to hint those interpretations, from body language to intimate aspects of their friendships to the way the series frames their encounters. Hinting is not, of course, the same as affirming canon. Nobody says that these shows and characters are factually LGBT. But they would certainly make sense to be, and the shows are perhaps plentily aware of that. |

In "Mao Dao Zu Shi" the fact that the protagonist and his partner are gay is just hinted (you know, chinese censorship). I felt the "gay vibe" in "The case files of Jeweler Richard" - again, both of the main characters -. Also Mikaela from Owari No Seraph (but maybe we can consider him canonically gay after the release of the last chapter). And maybe Kakegurui for some hinted lesbians (?) |
