I'm not sure why exactly this is the case but when I watch anime on my TV screen its much more relaxing and easier to get lost in it than when I watch it on my laptop. Its not a screen size issue, since I'm usually very close to the laptop, but when I watch it on the TV its like the experience is more immersive for some reason and next thing I know I realize I've spent the last 2-4 hours watching anime whereas on my laptop I tend to only watch for 40-60 minutes, maybe a couple hours at most.

Does anyone else notice this? It seems kind of strange to me.

For Blu-rays and DVD it's the television, because I don't have anything that will play BD on either the desktop or laptop machine so it has to be the BD player and the telecision, by extension the television has a bigger screen and the sound system is better anyway.

For streaming I connect the laptop using HDMI to a receiver for a dual monitor setup to watch streaming stuff on the television and my 5.1 surround sound system. So it's a bit of both here. Technically everything goes into the receiver, my BD player, my Region-free DVD player, an ancient VHS player, game system, laptop, etc. and you use the receiver to select the source to be output through the television and sound system.

I watch anime on TV screen only with BDs. Normally I watch anime on a smaller screen, for me it is more comfortable.

I prefer laptop since I prefer to use ear buds. Plus, there are times when I want to rewind a scene and laptop hotkeys are vastly superior.

For me, smartphone is more comfortable as it puts less strain on the body. Whereas when watching through laptops u only have two-three body positions to choose. So there are higher chances of body pain if u are binge watching.
I dont have my separate TV and i tend to watch anime alone with zero disturbances.
Screen size doesnt matter to me .

Depends on the show for me. If it looks particularly good I'll watch it on my TV, otherwise I'll watch it on my computer or laptop.

That's sort of what's going on right now. My roommate is being a bit of an asshole and keeps complaining about me watching anime even though I only use the TV before midnight and always use my laptop with headphones on after midnight. Recently though we had an argument because I was watching anime and he said it was too loud, and I told him he hasn't taken the trash out once all semester and that the kitchen smells horrible because he won't clean it.

Anyway though things are kind of tense right now so I'm just waiting for the semester to be over and for him to move out. I like watching anime on my TV better but I'm trying to avoid more conflict, I just want the rest of the semester to end peacefully.

Well it depends, when the TV is free and I have time, I mostly tend to play video games on it, when I'm bored I watch anime instead, otherwise it's on my pc (my screen is big anyways) or in the bed on my phone.

I watch anime on my laptop while it's plugged into my tv. I prefer it on the larger screen size and also my tv just feels different than my laptop screen. I think it has to do with how it's displayed. Also, my laptop screen looks different at different angles, whereas my tv looks the same.

My laptop has an HDMI port built in and I have it set so it just displays on my tv when plugged in, but with sound through my laptop (to use headphones). Honestly the best setup I can get at the moment, but I don't know if I can find better for me later on.

I've got a Steam Link so I basically watch all my anime from the comfort of my couch on my TV. It's just easier on my eyes. I don't have a laptop, just a desktop rig so being sat at the computer to watch anime is a bit of a bummer.

Also, when I watch it on the TV it's much easier to get away with watching anime that is older and therefore lower resolution.

I cannot watch on a computer as there's too much noise, on the other hand TVs/PVRs etc have a lot of trouble with complicated subs. My PVR only plays external srt subs in 1252 format so display gibberish went it has to cope with coding like a moving sign or karaoke.

So I will combine the best of both worlds, get a rasberry pi playing vlc, it's cheap, quiet and can't play any subs, just use a wireless mouse and its the perfect setup. The only drawback is you might need a geek mate to help set it up.

I used to watch Anime on the laptop screen directly when I was on the train to Frankfurt a.M. where I was studying Japanese Studies for 1-2 semesters. Aside from that, I had watched Anime on my desktop computer until around 2 and a half years ago, when I started to use my primary laptop and hooked it up on my TV for Anime watching and Visual Novel reading, because it's much more comfortable to watch on a big screen and my desktop computer isn't near my TV and can't be placed there without being in the way.

For any old anime, I stream with Apple TV on the big screen. Cel animation doesn't look as good on laptop compared to digital, but the picture is pretty great on a 49-inch LED. Always torrent though so I don't have to deal with stream lag.

For newer anime, I download and watch on laptop with MPV player. Looks better on a smaller screen.

I agree with OP with TV>Laptop for more immersion and easier to watch more in one sitting.

Would be good to know if laptops generally strain your eyes more than TV's and that could be the simple explanation as to why you can watch more anime for longer.

The laptop should have at least 17 inch screen...which almost defies the point of said laptop. (Gamer laptops, aren't those mainly for pros to continue training while travelling or in hotels?)
And yes you can use tablet or smart phone and watching it from closer but:
- You should use some sort of stand to not wear out your hands.
- Not sure if those their screens provide enough quality or could you distinguish all the pixels at higher resolutions.
Mobile devices are more suitable for drama or titles with a lot of dialogues and almost no animation or detailed art.

Thus quality monitor (connected to desktop computer or laptop) or TV set but you should watching it from closer: usually TVs are in bigger rooms and the distance is longer, which works with live action but you can miss visual details from cartoon titles.
There are good sound systems - for smaller or bigger spaces.

I agree with you, for the most part.

It largely depends on the type of anime i'm watching. If it's an action-heavy series with great, detailed art and animation, then TV it is, for sure.

On the other hand, if it's a slow slice-of-life or ecchi CGDCT show with simplistic art style and animation, then i'll usually just watch it on the laptop in bed.

Both methods of watching are pretty interchangeable for me, since i download high quality BD torrents on my laptop, and i can plug it into the TV's HDMI port if need be. Very convenient ^ ^

My guess is you sit more comfortable when watching on a TV.
I only watch certain shows or movies there but because I want movies to look the best they can I got myself an OLED, since I barely use my TV for anything else its kinda a waste but well. For some reason I just cant really relax while watching anime on a TV.

I can just urge everyone here to consider a tablet. You can watch anime everywhere, in every position, maximum comf. Got mine in 2016 for exactly this reason.

It depends on the anime. If it's "family friendly" and the animation is worth watching it on a big screen, then I watch it on TV in the living room. If it has ecchi elements/a lot of fanservice or the animation isn't that amazing, then I'll watch it on my laptop. Recently, I had to switch from TV back to laptop in Dororo's case since I noticed the quality on laptop is actually better.
I prefer the TV whenever I have the opportunity, since I like the cinema experience.

I agree with most of the points here, about sitting position etc.

One point I will like to bring up is that, using your laptop or phone could be a distraction as well, since you can easily access the browser and stop to check something.

I am more distracted when I use my laptop or phone, because sometimes notification comes up or I would just randomly pause the series and browse the internet.

Watching Anime on my TV in the living room is definitely the most enjoyable way for me to watch Anime. It gives me that old feeling of how I used to watch Anime as a kid, because watching Anime on a TV was the only way you could watch it in those days.

When it comes to Anime that I download, I just put it on a USB drive, and plug it into my TV. Unfortunately, I've been occasionally running into the problem where my TV can't play certain files, even though it recognizes the filetype. This really agitates me.
