Subaru had more than enough potential love interests already; how long a list do we need?
Fishy, right? Isn't it almost as if she wants him (and the audience) to trust her.
Echidna is the one responsible for making the barrier and trapping everyone inside. And if you analyze carefully you'll understand that Echidna actually has a foothold over all of the events going on (Puck -> Emilia, Roswaal, Beatrice, Ryuzu/Garfiel, etc). No character in this show is to be taken in a literal sense. People could be dishonest and deceitful, you know? Especially someone who claims to be the Witch of "Greed". I don't particularly trust the characters or the narration. That said, there have been quite a few other female characters who have liked Subaru pretty quickly, so it is a natural assumption to make.
(Edit: Ok, the Puck part is probably a minor spoiler. But yeah, even he is connected to Echidna. Season 1 anime skipped over a lot of the subtle foreshadowing, but it is in the LN vol6 during Puck's conversation with Petelgeuse when he mentions "Echidna") I read that.
The other witches in the tea party are dressed in an eccentric way, and they have generic slapstick antics, but to me it looks like those are only an attempt to hide the lack of substance. Their dialogue is so short and void of substance that they might as well have not been there. The Witch of Gluttony delivered a rant about gluttony without actually trying to properly explain her position, so it came across as arbitrary rambling.
It is not like every background character needs to be explained. Not enough time to flush out their characters in one episode. The novels dive a bit more into their characters. Then again, the other witches aren't relevant right now. It is just introducing us to them for when they'll eventually be useful. For now, they are just background characters. It is just that they have far better dialogues than typical background characters in other shows and people start mistaking them for the main cast. Depends on which shows you are comparing to, I guess. There are far worse, sure.
Meanwhile, we still know virtually nothing about society in the kingdom, even though the royal selection was supposed to be important, among other things. Evidently, it is not.
The world-building around characters and multiple parallelly growing plot threads are evident in the novels. The story/plot is complex (things might seem disconnected and irrelevant but the plot threads will start converging as we proceed). It is easy to see most of the connections, but that doesn't mean that the bloated writing and slow development were a good idea. This is the typical LN illness of never getting on with it. I have been reading the novel, and it is more detailed, but it is still very bloated and slow. Both the anime and the LN are full of unnecessary content. Even more random monsters to fight. Even more psycho arch-bishops. Even more female characters whose heartstrings have been tugged by Subaru. Even more of the same situational / slapstick comedy. The story would have worked better with a more streamlined approach.
And it is not as though all of the info-dumping is interesting anyway. It is often stated too matter-of-factly. It would be more enjoyable to read if the characters had more interesting points or arguments to make, or if they had more interesting beliefs or ideologies, or if they were wittier with their words.
The political and societal aspects aren't dived into yet because the Royal selection is not the main focus of the narrative right now. The selection will happen after 3 years and it is ample time for all the candidates would have grown/changed/developed by then. These aspects will be flushed out better when the royal selection becomes the urgent/important pressing issue at hand. That is the problem; the story should have been written so that the royal selection receives at least adequate focus. The same with the central mysteries of the premise. Waiting indefinitely just grinds the pacing to a halt, which is the biggest problem in the series. Does the author intend to continue the series to 40 volumes or something? That is what it feels like. I am almost sure I would quit before that point.
And actually, there's a whole lot of side stories and EX novels the author wrote which expand upon the existing world-building and also dive into bit more detail about politics and society (there are 3 extra novels on Crusch and Wilheim's backstory). I am aware of those.
But its like the main storyline sticks to Subaru's POV as he slowly explores the world around him, and those political & other aspects aren't directly relevant to him right now, as he's caught up in situations that need to be resolved urgently. ”Slow” being the operative word here. 35 episodes in, and the plot and world-building have been incredibly slow. That's the problem. The novels are a bit better, but the same problem exists. |
