I'll take that ending, it was fine. I do prefer the first season though, it was way more intense with the horror type of stuff.

"I couldn't possible miss at this range!"

LOL
-Doesn't know how to use a gun
-Holding it in one hand for dramatic effect
-Bad weather conditions
-Clearly not in a psychologically healthy state

You don't even need to rely on batshit crazy magic powers, she was unlikely to hit and even more unlikely to hit anything vital.

So, finally made it through to the end over Labor Day Weekend.

I'm entirely okay with a "happy ending", even if Tokano doesn't die hoist by her own petard as I had expected her to. I mean, there are really only four ways to end a time looping story:
1) Find a perfect way out
2) Find a way out with a lot of losses and remember those who fell (Groundhog Day -- homeless man still dies)
3) There's no way out ("Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home.")
4) There's no way out and you're lost in time and don't know it

So it was either going to end really happy or really sad. Fine.

What I have to dislike strongly is the screenplay and pacing of the last four episodes. Much like FMA:B and a few other series, the climax gets drawn out, the plot stops staying true to the strengths it's had before, and the characterization and dialog collapses to match what the plot is doing. Once it was known that Rika was alive, Tokyo should have been satisfied that the research was still correct, right? If the group was at a point where they were worried about news leaking out and prepared to massacre the 2K villagers anyway, why not just pull the trigger regardless once things went off the rails?

Contrary to some of the others who've posted here that just wanted tons of gore, I'm fine without that presence in this arc. Gore is shocking, but the suspense, tension, and mystery are what create the horror.

A story about how friendship, trust, and the "missing piece" are needed to win is fine, but unless the lesson involves magical loss of skills and equipment as an unavoidable result of the missing piece being in there (which might have worked if they had said at the start of the arc that fate had dictated that they now had to win and it was just a matter of how it happened), the way things were resolved really does a disservice to the effect it spent so much time building up.

What I didn't want at the end was one deus ex machina after another. For all its excellent use of pacing, plot tension, and character development, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai) ended with the second coming of the Ewoks' fight in Star Wars.

That was a great ending! I still don't feel bad for Takano though, after all the shit she put Rika through.
And WTF to that ending with the older Rika and young Takano

In hindsight, the way the mysteries were approached in S1 was great; however, the way the answers were given in this season was that much better.

As much as I loved the first season, while initially liking this season I felt like many others it dragged on too long and was a bit stale in parts. It lacked the intensity and atmosphere of series one and I feel they went overboard in explaining everything when the thing that was great about series one was the feeling that you didnt know what hell was going on most of the time and didn't know what to expect.
I lost interest towards the end but finally finished the series and felt the last episode redemed it a lot. I liked the end part with the young takano, it confused me in a good way and left me with something to think about. Going to watch the next series now.

I loved this series, it's honestly the best I've seen in a long time. What happened to Satoshi though? Did he ever get better? Guess I'll find out in season 3

Didn't think it would end this way especially after the S1. I can't remember which episode but when they revealed who the real villain(s) are I was greatly amazed! So the moral of this story is that everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE has to work together to defeat the bad fate. Still a lot of questions are left especially concerning the fantasy supernatural stuff. But overall it was just as great as the first season.. though they have very different approaches, pacings, twists and feels.

9/10, not less, not more..

Those ending minutes though.. remind me of S1.. so cryptic.. so intriguing... so we just have to watch the remaining sequels for all the questions to be answered, right?!?!?

BTW This season reminds me much of Steins;Gate!!! How enchanting!!!!!

This is exactly how i feel; i think it's also why i prefer the original FMA to Brotherhood.
These last few episodes did not at all fit with how higurashi was prior; really became a shonen-esque action series, and while i thought the ending where the group of friends confront Takano was great, the events leading up to it did it a dis-service. I rolled my eyes as to how easily they were able to take down the Yamainu, a bunch of kids versus trained personnel. Serious the Yamainu are complete idiots..

Some other things: If Rika's death triggers the disease to reach its terminal stage, then why did nothing happen after Rika killed herself in the Shion arc in Ni? Takano states that within 36 hours, stage 5 symptoms of the disease present themselves, and within 48 hours, people become violent. Why then did none of this happen during that story? Or was Keiichi's hallucination of Shion in the hospital a sign that the symptoms were getting more severe?

Also who was the woman in the end? Was it Rika? Did she travel back in time? if it's some other character entirely then that should be explained, but no other future arc explains it.

i wasn't a fan of only Hanyuu remembering Takano killing everyone, either. The whole point of Rika getting gutted alive was for her to remember those events; and she's capable of doing this since she remembered immediately the last few events of Ni when we first saw her in Kai and pretty much every single tragedy that happened in the other worlds she visited.

It wasn't explained either how Keiichi and the others were able to remember the things that they did in the other worlds. They just...were able to and no reason was really given. The last episodes where they go after Takano doesn't even mention any of that and the friends just kind of go along with what Rika and Hanyuu are saying. It seemed incredibly lazy and rushed.

Overall i really did enjoy this series, it's just those last few episodes..19-24..that really disappointed me.

A good show overall with great mystery but somehow loses its cool towards the end when little kids start going OP (high IQ plans lol) and some unexplained mythical being such as this little angel start to appear.

Takano parts made me raise it back to 7. I think in terms of mystery this may be one of the good shows out there.

I liked the first season more but the 2nd still deserves a 7 because of its nice reveals.

I initially liked this series because it helped make the characters more likable, which it lacked in the first season... But it became very generic and went on too long. This could have been a 12 episode season and got the point across.

I'm not really in a hurry to watch Rei. I started with high hopes, and it turned out to be painfully average.

Still an enjoyable series, but not as amazing as the first season. Seeing the first season end was exciting and seeing the second season end feels comforting, but it was nice to see the other chracters working together that the first season lacks which is also I loved about it. Since this season covered up the questions from the first season it's not as exciting as first season (which I really love from the first season), everything makes sense now. Loved how the first season confuses and fools me but also forces me to believe on a wrong information.

Take a look at my webnovel, read and seek the hidden truth behind the cursed ducks.

”That was the answer Rika Furude reached at the end of her thousand year journey in search of a miracle”

Damn that was great!
It’s unbelievable to think that Rika and Hanyuu endured this struggle for that long...I can’t even imagine the countless timelines they had endure. I’m happy they got a happy ending, Hanyuu included.

So many parallels with this and Steins;Gate imo: Rika traversing all the different worlds to find the one ideal timeline; how she had to fake her death to fool the enemy; and how she needed her friends’ aid to overcome the barrier.... very similar circumstances to Okabe and S;G. Both are very enjoyable takes on time travel!

As an end note,
I was hoping to see what would become of Nomura, as well as what would transpire for Takano after her failed plan.
As well, it would be nice to see if Satoshi would ever recover.
The ending with the older Rika was a bit confusing, but I assume it was another timeline where she gets to live with her family.

This really did feel like a conclusion to the story though... looking forward to what Rei has in store next!

What a ride this has been! Started off on an incredible note and slowly tapered away from then but it was still great by the end nonetheless.

Takano's loss was pretty much set in stone following last week's finale but seeing the effects of the Syndrome kick in, I suppose, was a fitting punishment in itself when you think about it. Tomitake-san's little moment there in the end was quite sweet though.

After credit scene. Now this was a little interesting addition. Fact that it's Anime Original however gives me the impression that it was just a sort of a message from the team that things could've played out a lot differently or something of the sort. I'm fine with this, really. But there's also the matter that the events of S1 and S2 would be completely nullified by this so mixed feelings again. It'll be great if S3 touches on this but I'm not going to get my hopes up high for that. Got to say, old Rika sure looks scary.

Anyway, that was finally a happy ending for Rika and Hanyuu's long journey! Perhaps a little too happy, I'm sure many might argue, but fitting. It would've left a bitter taste had it stumble again, after all. A bit more clarity on Satoshi's situation would've been highly appreciated too but I suppose that's for the next installment to work on.

Mystery and horror galore in the first season and the answers and filling in with the holes here, brilliant stuff! Certainly missed the horror and gore aspect from S1 but getting to see some crucial answers and then these events unfold in the last two attempts was a great follow-up.

Hanyuu's addition to the cast was really nice too! I'm personally a fan of Horie Yui-san so I might be a little biased but it was a really good performance from her imo. Although it must be said that Rika's VA completely sweeped the victory in this aspect. And that's saying a lot, trust me.

Previously on Episode 1 Discussion, I mentioned that the Op & ED for this season was comparatively not as good and I still stand by that opinion but, even then, I must say that this was really fitting. It is, after all, Rika's season in many ways. Will not forget that scene of her running in the Op and the vocalist taking it to the next level right there!

Still a few questions in mind but one that really springs up to mind is about the mystery behind Keichi's murder of Satoko's uncle. What's the catch behind that? I wonder if S3 will cover that in due time...

Others include who killed Keichi during Shion's massacre arc or was it the panic attack (heart attack) that killed him?

Anyway, going to give this a solid 8.5/10. Absolutely loved this approach of Questions first followed by Answers second.

In the original timeline, they died and Takano went to stay at the abusive orphanage and then at her father's professor friend's house who became like an adopted grandfather. In the ending scene of episode 24 of Higurashi Kai, Bernkastel travels back and creates another parallel universe which splits off. She tells the child Takano that her friends aren't home and her parents are going out right now to have fun at the department store, so she hurries back to them sooner. This causes them to catch a different bus than the one they originally did. The bus driver still has a heart attack and crashes, presumably killing himself and/or other passengers or surrounding cars, but Takano's parents are no longer on that bus. They are with her on a different bus, allowing them to survive. This is why the scene immediately afterward depicts her returning home happily with a foreign country's flag from the restaurant to add to her collection. Takano will now live happily together with her alive parents in this new parallel universe, allowing her her own resolution and some form of happy ending somewhere.

It just isn't in the same universe as all the characters we know. It will be a different timeline splitting off from that point of divergence. The Takano we see in the majority of the show will still be infected with Hinamizawa syndrome, defeated, and arrested, but this allows another version of Takano to exist with a better life. Her life path in that universe will no longer be the same as her parent's death was the sole catalyst for her going down that path and her later actions.

Didn't understand how adult Rika(?) went back in time to do whatever with little evil b Takano.

Season was a 7/10. It was an 8/10 for much of it but the final few episodes were just too corny with not enough suspense and I had to lower it.

Cool to see Hanyuu confront Takano like that, but still not really sure what her deal is in the first place.

Time to give Rei episode 1 a watch and see if it's worth finishing.

Can't criticize much, the story telling is very neat this season. The first half was amazing I was going to give it a 9/10 but they chose to take the intensity out to conclude everything up which I think they could've worked it better. The first season was more fun to watch tho. 8/10, slightly better than season 1 in some aspect.

What an amazing final episode! It was heartbreaking to see Takano crying in Tomitake's arms like that... Although Matsuribayashi-hen isn't my favourite arc, it was still a beautiful end to the anime series.

Also, for anyone wondering why Takano's bullet missed Hanyuu at point blank range, in the original visual novel Rika uses everyone's combined strength to create a miracle and stop time to catch Takano's bullet before it hits Hanyuu. Notice how she was talking about creating miracles before and how she mentioned that the things that happened up until that point, like Akasaka rescuing her at the Sonozaki mansion, weren't worthy of being called a miracle? She was saving her power for that moment. I thought that surely we would see the epic scene of Rika freezing time and calmly taking the bullet out of the air, but I guess it was cut for some reason and they just made Takano miss instead.

Maybe the scene at very the end where adult Rika travels back in time to bring Takano happiness was the miracle she was talking about in the anime? In the visual novel that scene is just an easter egg alternate ending after completing the main story. Either way, I loved this ending too.

So in the end they actually manged to save everyone, huh? That last scene with adult Rika was kinda weird though, so she went back in time to give Miyo a happy timeline? Weird that she was able to do that just like that though, would have preferred the anime without that scene.

Overall a much better season than the first one, simply due to the fact that all the mysteris were solved. First season was just a clusterfuck of different timelines without any explanation, so I did not enjoy it. This time I actually was keen on watching the next episode and see how they will try to trick fate. The last arc was especially enjoyable, wonder what the OVAs will be about now though. 6/10

Arigatou, Studio Deen for making this wonderful Horror/Mystery/Psychological anime. Although it has ups and downs but with that how it wraps up, it's super satisfying. I'll rate this 10/10.

(Now time to jump for the sequel/2020 version of this anime. Let's see what difference will it take since they said that the 2020 ver. will have a different story :)

Oh my, i might be sounds silly. But the after credit scene already openned up my eyes that the Higurashi franchises was so big with all of their different story, but somehow connected with each others. If i don't even read the description at sypnosis, or even wiki at the same time about those 'Frederika', i might be confused right now xD.

Sooo, thats it! The end of their happy world, after getting so much troublesome at the previous episode. Once again, with a lot of effort, team works, a great determination, they could overcome everything and ended up with no one died. Yeah, not even Tomitake, and Irie, even Takano Miyo too. She has been forgiven! As Rika's stated at the end of the confrontation, the world was not designed to determine a loser. But its simply to made everyone fell into a happiness, even to Miyo too, proves with the after credit scene where Frederika saved her.

Well, no shit, its over! I might feel to visited the other series too, like Kai, or etc. But for now. This is an entertaining series, as a good continuations from S1. And i am glad i had a time to visit this before my death arrive me. Lol.

10/10, maybe i am too kind. Some parts maybe even sounds silly and couldn't even reach the logic, as some peoples already mention it before. But, to hell with that! The happy end was so deserving for them! So, yeah, i am happy too with those end. As a result, a nice 10 numbers can show all of my gratitude without a doubt. Thats it for me!

Fantastic ending, I like how Higurashi separates it's story through question and answer arcs. Season 1 was definitely more suspenseful and scary as it was just filling us up with mysteries. And then Kai to answer all of those mysteries. I must say the When they cry franchise is now one of my most favorite piece of entertainment.

If only I had more time, maybe in the future I can get into the visual novels and then through Umineko. Hopefully after Gou they make a proper Umineko adaptation since I've heard the Deen one sucks. Well I am going to give Kai a 10/10

Finally finished Higurashi : Kai.

The happy ending is fine with me but still, some parts of the last few episodes felt dull and the last episode is not an exception.

This sudden happy moments or you could call "anime only faces/reaction" creates a mood dissonance for me. I admit, when they commenced their plan and things got interesting, I was really at the edge of my seat, but this tension-breaker scenes kinda turned me off. I mean, we're dealing with life & death here.

Also, these Yamainu suddenly felt incompetent towards the end. Where are the guns when they needed it the most? Outmaneuvered by child traps? They're better than this, right? And to further degrade them, the Banken unit exists. Quite convenient.

Also, where are the yakuzas in the Sonozaki household that could have help them? Or was it kept a secret from them? Anyway, for a rich family, I find it odd that no guards are on stand-by. Also, I was surprised that they left the door open and just ran away to their basement knowing they are followed. Well, they could still open the wooden door though.

I will not mention all of the bad points I found,
but in all fairness, the storyline is very engaging and the series structure is something I really liked about Higurashi.

S1 - Throw different arcs (timelines) from different perspectives, that left unanswered questions, until hint of timeloop/parallel worlds was apparent.

S2 - Connect the dots until main story revealed, uncover the mysteries, justify the antagonist, Climax and Resolution.

Not flawless but still enjoyed the series.
Off to OVAs and sequels if any.

Thank you daniboi1, I'm currently watching it and waiting for next thursday to arrive! I found the first half of Gou to be a little slow, not much difference from S1-S2 but the last few episodes have been very exciting.

I like this series especially kai, it cannot be compared to S1, but it cannot make any sense if you didn't see it first. It was a suitable end... I don't know how/why they make any sequel to that... but I guess it was their choice. Now let's see if they made the right choice or not!

One more thing, from the past 2 or 3 eps (24, 23, and 22) I just mute the opening and replaced it with this theme song instead, imagining with Higurashi charcters:

It suits the situation very well xD
For the ones that like to bother others (like me) with "you should read the manga/LN", please stop. I don't read mangas, I will NOT read mangas, I will not listen to what manga readers complain in adaptation to the anime counterpart, I only watch anime except in very few and specific situations.

OK, that was a good end, but after all Takano survive and I don't know what to think about this... She had painful past, so I feel sorry about that but she made very bad to everyone else.

Tomitake showing his affection for her, moved me though.

What matters is that Rika and her friends won the fate (this time) ^_^

It was a good ending I suppose, a little anticlimactic if I'm being honest and I liked the first season more, but the ending with adult Rika helping young Miyo in some other timeline was a nice addition.

What a way to end, even Takano being forgiven and being taken in by Jirou.
Despite knowing all she's done in other worlds I genuinely felt bad for her knowing what she wanted, ultimately her past made her, shown even better after the woman (I'm guessing was Rika but one that gave up on saving her friends) making it so Takano could live on with her parents instead of going down the path hat we eventually saw.

I didn't have any expectations going into this other than it probably being a cheesy horror anime but damn ... it's such a well written story.
A rewatch will surely be so rewarding seeing all the pieces thrown at us in season 1.
