anime is a multimedia franchise so if you spend money on otaku things do you spend more on anime, manga, novels, games or etc?

thread is inspired by this https://soranews24.com/2019/02/03/anime-vs-idols-latest-annual-otaku-survey-shows-where-fans-are-spending-their-money/

and thoughts overall like did the decline of the japanese anime domestic market is cause by the rise of gacha games there in japan for example? i say yes seems obvious but its good that anime is profiting more and more globally now

i do not spend money on otaku things (your vote)

EDIT:

anime most of the time is a multimedia franchise anyway

so yes regular video games count if they are about anime characters for example like Jump Force or Dragonball FighterZ

I've always been a fan of DBZ fighting games and also started playing some VNs and gachas since 2016 whereas I have never spent much money on manga or merchs either.

I am a big light novel reader, so i spend a bit every few months on new books. I do not consider myself an otaku. I just like to read a good story.

I go for games, but you know what...

RPGMaker style game > Visual Novel style game.

I don’t want to sit there, just pressing spacebar to get from Point A to Point B linearly.

I want an active immersion.

1: I bought a few anime blu-rays in the past from Funimation since their prices doesn't cost me a kidney (looking at you Aniplex and Japanese Anime Blu-Rays).

2: I pay for a subscription for both Crunchyroll and Funimation. Netflix too since they have an anime library if that counts? Although, I don't just watch anime on my Netflix account.

3: I buy a few JRPGs every year that are anime-themed (Trails of Cold Steel, Persona, YS VIII and etc) but NOT visual novels since I'm not a full weeb and those are cringe as fuck. I've ironically played one (JUST ONE) in the past because of my friend and I gave up on the "game" (Imagine classifying VNs as games lol) after a couple of hours.

4: I've never bought a single anime figurine or poster though..I have the money but I don't want to fill up my room with weeb shit and have my friends make fun of me.

5: I don't read LNs and I read some manga sometimes but I've never spent a single cent on a manga in my life and I don't plan to. Manga Rock FTW BAYBEEEEE!

But...your forum avatar is from a visual novel... (I dunno, maybe you picked her because she's cute and not because you played the game. That's legit.)

OT: I primarily spend money on figures, followed by manga/LNs and plush (mostly Pokemon). My significant other and I are pretty serious collectors, and I probably enjoy collecting more than I enjoy watching anime. We also collect other merch, and casually collect console games, but a majority of the collection is manga/LNs, figures, and plush.

To those interested, here's most of our living room:

Here is a blog post with a more in-depth tour as well, though it's already pretty outdated only a month later. With some new figure additions, some of the problematic shelves look a lot better now.

We have collectibles in every room of the home, though, so this isn't everything. There is a wall of Rem figures in my significant other's office, and I have the Aikatsu collection in the bedroom.

Lol you're welcome. The ironic thing is that almost none of our anime-watching is done legally. We have Hulu and occasionally watch anime on it, but nearly everything is torrented. Someday we'll fix that...probably.

Yea, I can't defend myself on this one. You got me lol. I forgot that "The Nonary Games" was primarily a Visual Novel, even though it had actual game play. It's been 3 years. When I say VNs though, I was referring to those VNs that are mostly dating sims and with H scenes.

Anyways, I have the game on my PS4, so I played 999, Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma. I also didn't pick Phi just because she's cute. I mean, that's part of it. I genuinely think she's a good character and that's why I like her and that's why I have her as my forum pic.

I live in a third world country so my case is different

I go with choice one minus the legal stuff bec of the above reasons

I read/ watch anime and manga online and occassionally download also because of that

I don't download games of any sort except for some pokemon, yugioh, duel masters via emulators as the gameplay is more to my liking

I've bought some anime DVD, magazines and posters but never had figurines, hoodies, and dakimakura

And that's it. My life's boring lol

having Hulu a legal streaming site is good enough imo

also buying those expensive merchandises like figurines helps greatly the anime studios too afaik since they usually draws the poses and clothing of those figurines and also the anime studio staff draws those posters and any images seen on any merchandise so they get royalties from that

That's fine and all, but I'm not going to claim I'm something that I'm not....Unless the definition of "otaku" has changed or something....I'm going to be honest....I really don't keep up with that kinda stuff...

I've only spent a couple of hundreds of dollars on light novels. Mostly because when watching an anime, you want to know more right? Bought the light novels, realized there's like hell of a lot more information in them than it was in the anime. Which made me buy more.

If you've seen Overlord. I really recommend buying the light novel. Did the same with Konosuba. Also, the upcoming Kumo Desu ka which comes early next year as anime. Already read 8 light novels of it and it's extremely fun and great. Hope the anime will be the same. Worried about the CGI tho.

It's either manga/LNs or figures. I don't keep my manga list updated (at all) because I barely give a damn about my anime list, and I consume a lot more anime, but for series I really like I do tend to buy the manga. I have a small shelf.

I also have a few figures, and those really fucking add up fast with their prices. I have 7 in total on my shelf. On top of that, I got me a fancy 3D tit mousepad with Run on it. No daki, though, but I'd buy one if there was one of Run that I liked.

Safer option is probably figurines/otaku merch. I wouldn't rule out manga/LNs entirely but I don't have exact price values or anything. My Nadeko figure cost a couple hundred euro, though, which alone might be worth my entire manga/LN collection.

But even without my crippling gambling problem it would probably still be games, since I've bought a decent amount VNs. Outside of that the only anime related things I've bought are a couple figurines, but they're the cheap kind so doesn't add up to much.

I tend to spend a bit (haha) of money on physical anime (DVD, Blu-Ray).

Sometimes I buy a figure when it's on sale or when I see something at a flee market. And on rare occasions I buy an OST or Artbook.

My collection of DVDs is massive and all but 2 of my streaming services are for anime. I have a lot of rare collections, rare OVAs and movies, a decent selection of VHS and laserdisc releases, and special releases.

Having said that, my manga collection is also nothing to sneeze at nor my game collection. I tend to buy a random manga that I've never seen before every time I visit a secondhand book store or buy several hundred dollars worth when my favourite bookstore in Sydney. Almost all my games are related to anime in some way and I collect for pretty much every console from Famicom to the most recent releases.

My figure collection is kind of small but I have a lot of figures from my favourites (including a decent number of Super Sonico figs). Only a couple of body pillows that I've never even taken out of their packaging.

I don't really buy anime music releases... CDs are expensive and I don't really listen to them. I have a few though.

oh then i guess they don't count.

I'm more likely to be playing a variety of stuff that has art in the anime style but isn't linked to any specific anime franchise.
