I'm...actually kinda hyped.

Okay so, the dialogue in this series is generally hammy, but this episode really made it worse with how expository it was. Ie, characters stating info that they already know.

But I did really like the scene with Beatrice: I liked how her angry reaction to Subaru was because of the underlying subtext that she was upset about him killing Betelgeuse, whom she had some kind of connection with.

Although...I'm really confused by Subaru: before season 2, I always kept asking why Subaru never asked a single person about the Witch Cult to learn more about the origin of his powers, and maybe how he could get around his curse. So the fans defended my argument with, "Well, because the Witch is such a taboo topic, there's no way Subaru will get any info out of anyone about it unless they're a member of the Cult." (even though Subaru can just kill himself, painlessly even, and restart) But in this episode...Subaru showed one of those characters a gospel from the Cult, and asked about them. So...why didn't he do anything like that in season 1?

However, I don't like how this show keeps introducing new characters, without developing the other ones, the ones whom keep getting killed off and whom we're supposed to care about.

The opening...is actually kinda badass. It's more intense, it shows Subaru's stronger resolve to save the people around him no matter how many times he'll die. I don't think season 2 is going to actually psychologically push Subaru more than briefly, so I won't get my hopes that season 2 will be an intense psychological anime that actually explores the mental turmoil of being killed multiple times horrifically.

I'm actually genuinely interested in the plot now: I heard from LN readers that this arc is going to be the longest, meaning that because that season 2 is one big arc, it's going to have a clear focus and direction, rather than bouncing all over the place like in season 1. I've also heard from LN readers that this arc will FINALLY actually develop Emilia, so hopefully I'll have a reason to care about her outside of her being a cute girl and a good person.

Despite this, I still am bothered by the contrasting tones of this show: the fact that in the same series where the MC gets brutally murdered multiple times, there is a fetishized trap (I have no problem with crossdressing; but when it's fetishized, it's hard to take seriously), characters overreacting, and a very go-happy color palette. It's like this series wants to be taken seriously, but not alienate viewers, so it becomes a mish-mash of all tones, trying to be everything, but being nothing, tone wise. I don't understand why fans of this show aren't the least bit bothered by this.

We always knew there were more witches, but I guess it's a piece of information that's easy to miss in season 1, since it's only mentioned once

Pretty dope episode!

So another maid showed up, Frederica. I love how Subaru just slips out the words about her teeth. It's interesting though, one beast maid and 2 demon maids. I wonder what her powers are!

The talk between Subaru and Beatrice was really nice to watch again, whenever they strike a conversation, it's great! Some stuff Beatrice said was rather interesting though, especially calling Petelguese by a nickname!

So Subaru and Emilia are heading for the sanctuary and Subaru runs into the Witch of Greed.. Now things are gonna get interesting!!

Also that OP (ED for this episode) is an absolute banger!!!!

This was a very interesting episode. Beatrice seems to know Petelgeuse, and Frederica seems like she plays a much bigger role than we might think!

Also, the Witch of Greed finally appears! Is that Maaya Sakamoto voicing her?? If so... HYPE!!

Good episode again.

Liking Frederica already.

The conversation between Beatrice and Subaru was pretty interesting, is Beatrice one of the Sins herself? She spoke in a manner where she was remembering Betelgueuse out of nostalgia.

Emilia-tan was too adorable when she tried to her embarrassment. <3

I don't understand Subaru's actions of removing the amulet from Emilia when it started glowing, didn't Frederica specifically mention that it was supposed to help grant them passage through the forest? Did he not trust her? Was Subaru's meeting with Echidna in fact supposed to be Emilia's?

Echdina seems like an interesting character, voice by Sakamoto Maaya too, hype!

I think she and Roswaal are intimately involved with the sins and witches at the very least, they're both so old, wouldn't be surprised if all the sins were her childhood friends LOL

I don't know if this is the official translation but in the Polish version of the LN it was translated as "Witch Element" and from what I have heard in the fan translation of the WN it was translated as "Witch Gene". I think the later two tell more about what it really is. Hmm... should I consider it a spoiler?

Hmm...interesting. It would explain why both Echdiona and Regulus look like they could be brother an sister with the white hair and eyebrows, if it was something genetic. But then why would Beako ask if he destroyed the Witch Factor? Is it something that can be destroyed? Was she referring to the Witch who can pump out all of that factor she wants?

My guess is it's something that can be bestowed by the Witch to alter the person into being their Archbishop. It's like an X Factor

The sharp teeth girl appears! Subaru is so uncultured saying that her teeth are scary, teeth girls = best girls. There is something mysterious going on between her and Roswaal, and most likely Ram is also involved, just what are they up to?
Felt bad for Beatrice, she was so frustrated, almost crying. Even more mysteries surrounding her, apparently she is a Great Spirit (kinda explains her relationship with Puck though) and knows a lot about Witch Cult.
Emilia was very cute when they mentioned her talking about Subaru lol.
Petra is now a maid and she appears to like Subaru, the harem grows...
God damn Echidna is so beautiful.
OP had cool visuals, the song seemed so-so, but I think it'll grow on me as the OPs from the 1st season did.
5/5.

You may want to let your hopes rise just a little!

If you want a little more background on Felis as a character, you could read the side story light novel "Dream of the Lion King." It may or may not change you opinion of how his character is developed and treated. I personally don't find him annoying like the average trap since I think it's pretty clear that his behavior is part defense mechanism, plus he definitely seems to be fully romantically committed to Crusch.

I get bothered sometimes by tone whiplash myself, but this series doesn't bother me so much since it's changes are almost always light to dark whiplashes, which don't bother me like dark to light whiplashes do (or serious to comedy whiplashes.)

Surprisingly, I liked the OP music more when I heard it in this episode than I did when I heard it in the preview. Plus, wasn't that bunny in the OP just plain adorable?!

A slower episode than the first, which is fine. Maybe even necessary.

- New character introduced
- Apparently there's some sort of connection between Beatrice and Sloth.
- I can't have been the only one who was expected a death at the end right?

Firstly, where are the villagers? Why haven't they returned?

Next, from the foreshadowing in Frozen Bonds OVA on Petelguese.

Then Beatrice having some connection to Puck (both are great spirits and Beatrice is fond of Puck and calls him "nee-chan" in S1). And then Beatrice seemingly having some connection to Petelgeuse. My worst fears are coming true. Definitely something shady is going on between these people. And they've hidden it from Emilia (or she doesn't remember).

Moreover, from the Frozen Bonds OVA, I figured out (by comparing the VAs) that:

and now WHERE IS PUCK ??! The last episode he was like "Counting on you to take care of Lia" and then vanished.

And probably its just me, but Emilia collapsed when Subaru snatched the crystal from her?! And Subaru got teleported to a pink-haired elf. And then he meets Echidna shortly afterwards. Why do I feel like it was Emilia who was supposed to meet Echidna? But Subaru snatched away the crystal so instead he went there. Like, Emilia mentioned about wanting to meet other elf just a few seconds before she collapsed, and then we see AN ELF. Moreover, while sending them off Frederica says something along "will Emilia-sama be able to overcome the sanctuary? We can only just pray" while looking at the letter handed by Roswaal.

Damn. I have a very bad feeling about all this.

And BTW, all the witches (except Satella) are supposed to be dead right? It was mentioned in S1 that Satella murdered all other witches. So how is Echidna still here? Did Subaru teleport into the past? or that mysterious building sent him into the past by some kind of time travel similar to RBD.

Lots of questions. Can't wait for the next Episode.

Nice to see Echidna here. Easily my 2nd favorite character in the franchise, behind Crusch. And the opening song was solid too, I didn't care for it at first when I heard it for the first time but it's grown a lot on me.

Otherwise this episode was average, but not shocked by that. The content itself was just build till the Echidna part. If adapted well, the next episode should be my favorite of the franchise so I'm more interested to see how that goes.

I like that they put the Echidna-heavy OP at the very end for after she officially appears. It's like she's suddenly taken over the show lol

I'd forgotten how confusing things can get from Subaru's perspective. Was taking the gem from Emilia a bad idea? Suddenly he's at some ruins/the sanctuary, and then suddenly he's in another space entirely with THE WITCH OF GREED. What is even happening here?! lol

Decent episode, about on par or a little better than last week. Its not the most interesting stuff I've seen from Re:Zero, but I'm definitely willing to watch buildup episodes if it means that the payoff is going to be large. I'm hoping there will be more drama and suspense, and less humor overall in the coming weeks.

Also, Elsa is finally back after not being seen for like 23 episodes. Hopefully, she'll be an interesting character. OP animation and everything was pretty good, the music was aight. Tbh, this OP is my third favorite among the OPs so far; not that it's a bad OP, but the first two were absolutely great. Hopefully the ED will be an absolute banger, like the other two EDs so far.

A bit of a slower episode, to which I'd feel suits Re:Zero's narration to a T. Still very, very enjoyable though.

With what happened to all at the very strong Episode 1, Subaru, Emilia and vegetable Rem leaves Crusch's residence to head back to Roswaal's for safety reasons.

Blonde maid Frederica finally makes her entrance (along with kid Petra) as a temporary replacement for sisters Ram and Rem for cover of duties, but there's more than meets the eye.

Nice seeing Beatrice again, and with it, Beako and Subaru's nitpicking conversation. She is a mystery then, and still is one now. Talking about the Sin Archbishops though, with Sloth Betelgeuse's death, it seems that this is a very sensitive topic that could affect the very nature of things. Her relation with him...what does this mean?

Onwards to the sacred Sanctuary, and death flags at the ready (not that Subaru's "Return by Death" will ever work again, the limitation shown during the fight).

Seeing the Witch of Greed Echidna at the end, we know it's coming, but is still a good chilling shocker of a buildup.

Konomi Suzuki has delivered another nice OP, Season 1 still being the better ones.

Another splendid episode.

Not gonna lie....it rly annoys me how the people act in this anime. Everyone acts like nothing happened and especialy Subaru , who by now should be 100% focused on dieing the least amount of times, yet he still has bullshit dialogue....

Its getting interesting with the witch here, but i hope to GOD, that Subaru is not retarded and instead of freaking out about the witch , he should talk to her and get informations out of her as many as he can. I rly hope he wont pull out some of that cringy dialogue, about how EVIL she is and blame her for some random bullshit he still dose not understand, instead of having his head into the goddamn game....

I would highly suggest you re-watch. lol. There are TONS of small hidden details in S1. And I've heard many stuff will connect in Season 2.

It will take 10 hrs of a binge to finish the Season 1 (I'd suggest watching the Director's cut version, it packs the season into 13 episodes of 46mins making it easier to binge)
Yeah, the director cut seems interesting but after watching Hellsing ultimate 46 min sounds like a lot lmao. But I think I'll go for it regardless, after all S2 is just airing

Wow that was a pretty good second ep, also a lot more lighthearted than last weeks ep which is pretty nice, got a couple laughs out of it.

The new OP (ED for this ep) is really good and blends well with the visuals, which also brings some questions with it. And Subaru's parents!

The new (old) maid, Frederica, seems pretty cool/evil looking with her teeth but I'm sure she's nice. Hopefully we got more information about her in later episodes. Also maid Petra, I'm sure she'll make a good main lol.

So Beatrice apparently knows Petelgeuse, I'm guessing that her backstory and how she knows him will be touched on in later episodE (which I'm REALLY looking forward to), but her saying "Geuse" really threw me off for a moment there.

I was kinda, but not really, expecting a cliffhanger-ish ending so soon in the season, but aye Witch of Greed. I wonder if she'll explain why that crystal teleported Subaru into the middle of the forest?
Really looking forward to next weeks episode.

“Then you’ve left me behind, too, I suppose... Geuse.”

Damn so much to take in...what a great episode!!!
So Betty knows Betelgeuse — they had some prior engagement and it's hinted they were quite close. She knows things about the Witch Cult, for instance the Witch Factor. She also likely has some idea as to what Roswaal is doing and why he’s doing it. Looking forward to Betty playing a bigger role this season... she knows more than she lets on.

And finally the big reveal is here! — Echidna, the Witch of Greed.
We know she's powerful as she can effortlessly tell what Subaru's thinking, “So that is the root of your desire? How very interesting.”

Echidna in the 'The Frozen Bond' tells Puck not to needlessly meddle with Emilia and then Puck disappears after telling Subaru to take care of Emilia in the previous episode.
There's a shroud of mystery behind Roswaal’s motives and why he seems to keep Emilia in the dark, but the clues seem to point to the fact that Emilia will go through some sort of Trial by Fire. It was hinted several times this episode.

Looking forward to the next one!

You're making a lot of assumptions that:

I) she knows anything about RBD

2) she knows anything about Satella

3) Subaru will literally drop everything he's doing especially when he no idea where he is what happened to Emilia just talk to someone for hours who all he knows might kill him.

Like dude you got have priorities. What good anything she has to say if he has no idea where his friends are alive or not nor where he is

This is more of a good thing than a bad thing. Because real life doesn't have one tone, if there was one consistent tone through out the show be it a more slice of life tone or a drama/action, we either wouldn't gain so much love and affection for these characters or intrigue to keep watching the show. A lot of the more mundane conversions never come up again, you know what that's like? Real life. But it's these small things that get us more acquainted with the characters even though we only remember the climax of the story. All in all, it's the difference between work and a hobby.

ANYWAYS I really like this show. Where do I donate to the author again?

It's like this series wants to be taken seriously, but not alienate viewers, so it becomes a mish-mash of all tones, trying to be everything, but being nothing, tone wise. I don't understand why fans of this show aren't the least bit bothered by this.

But Re: Zero isn't trying to emulate real life: it's a fictional story set in a fantasy world with zany exaggerated characters with multi-color hairstyles. It features maids who show off their cleavage, a fetishized crossdresser, and a protagonist who constantly yells for no reason.
Avatar the Last Airbender is also an animated series that shifts its tone from being light hearted to serious. However, it generally has a light hearted tone with the occasional drama; but that drama never takes itself so seriously that it becomes a completely different show.
With Re: Zero, that isn't the case; this is a an anime that wants you to take it very seriously, but also doesn't want to alienate you with how serious it can be, so it injuects waifus and slice of life-ish scenes of light heartedness. As a result, it has no consistency in its identity: Re: Zero is too light hearted to be dark, and too dark to be considered light hearted; there is no balance.

How about Beatrice's reaction to how Subaru obtained that gospel? The way she responded made it seem like she knew Betelgeuse. Maybe they were friends before he joined the Witch's Cult. Perhaps we'll learn more as the season goes on.

Some interesting dialogues and passages from the Light Novel, skipped in this episode::

It is NOT spoiler, since are about events already exhibited in the episode.

1. The losses and concerns of Crusch Faction.

2. The second advice of Felix

3. The very important dialogue with Otto

4. The meaning of Petra's handkerchief

5. For Emilia, a deal is a DEAL.

Any was truly not necessary, but it sets the panorama better. In other hand, most of anime watchers would be bored as hell with the slow pace of all other passages under excessive narration.

That is why i preffer to 1st watch the episode, then complement it with the light novel, if possible, never the opposite.

But the 1st five episodes of this season i already covered doing the same with the manga, which for me is a experience different, but so as good as watch the anime, and not tiring like advancing in novel only.

Girl it’s just you hun. The tonal whiplash is one of the many unique hallmarks of this show. They made it work or else the series would not have been as huge as it is today.

Many people who seen fan arts of rem or ram whatever online have no clue how gory, dark and depressing the show can get which turn out to be a nice surprise when they finally watch the show.
