You realize SAO IS an Isekai, correct?

SAO isn't an isekai. At all.

You can even call it garbage if you may, but by definition, it isn't isekai.

Oh yes some resloution to the king and princess arc.

At least they lost their position. I am not too naive to think that this is the end of both of them.....

Come on guys,think!

I actually teared up a bit with this episode, despite the changes, IMO it was one of the best episodes so far, and they really did nail the queen.

heck they changed the whole scene just to show Naofumi as the "hero" he is not, this happened actually

then do not complain that the adaptation is not up to the original material because the web novel is trash, Nao is just a bastard who does atrocities and who likewise treat him like a hero anyway.

Context IS KEY.
Also let me start with saying, the writter is a woman.
Naofumi's hatred is very much justified, but to a certain degree excessive in the long run, since even after this arc, what happened with him on the beggining doesnt go away, it left a scar on him, something that keeps burning and consuming him inside.
The manga follows the light novel... I was happy about the change, dunno if they could have pulled it off in the anime, without making Naofumi look like the worst asshole ever, even when reading, I was very conflicted about his attitude, which hey makes him being a very interesting character, but I still felt it was the best decision to have it like it is on the anime.
Time helps people forget and forgive, it is not like Naofumi forgives them on the anime, but I m happy to see him a bit more condescending and mature there, their deaths wont change what was done.

The other heros are still gonna be idiots it seems

They have a LONG way to go, this episode ends vol4 of the LN, if you want to see their redemption, you would need at least more 7-8 volumes, which means on third season, if that is ever done.
Short story, dont expect them to change for now.

Deminus said:
This felt kinda underwhelming compared to the manga. The Anime made the characters look way too merciful, which ruined the scene for me.
What made me like Naofumi's character was because of how merciless he was compared to other main charatcers, but the Anime is kinda making him look like that generic forgiving MC you would find anywhere.

Merciful because he decided to spare their lives whereas in the LN source he really wants to see their heads roll? Yes, but I m glad for this change, it was a bit too extreme, and the damage to Naofumi was already done long ago, killing them would have put them in a worst spot.
He actually starts to mellow and bit a bit more soft over time, but it a slow development for him, it still does come, I think what they did on the LN worked there, left me conflicted but I could understand since there was alot of context to it there, but it was nice that they changed it in the anime.

Next it will be Cal Mira arc, which to me was better than this one, will be nice to see the show changing its direction abit~~

Honestly if we knew everything about what happened to the former king , aka, trash he wouldve been a good character tho .

He does get his development later on, and you can sympatize with him more.
As you can see, he hates demihumans, but that is cuz he spent alot of the time of his life as an younger soldier and hero (he married to the queen, not otherwise, he was not royal blood), fighting wars against the country of demihumans, he has a very POOR impression on them, it left him with alot of hatred and grief, which he has never was able to overcame... so despite everything, he still has some good in there, whereas Malty is really just a bitch without a shred of humanity inside her.

SkyLETV said:

What I find curious is that nobody mentions the appearance of the green-haired girl from the opening, and I already like her but I wonder what role she'll play, because she looks like a main character but she's supposed to be in the archer's party so who knows.

She has a major role later on, not on the next arc, but for a possible next season, so they were just making her appear, to introduce people to her slowly (also she is one of female cast, that doesnt "join" MC's harem despite what happens... so you have to give that some props).

Konpurekkusu said:
It's weirdly satisfying having the king and princess get punished. I do not like the cheap writing and solution though. I mean, "bitch" and "whore"? Is that the best writing Shield Hero has to offer? Really getting the "alternative moral narrative" there, huh?

Naofumi is still Naofumi, on the LN he was more merciless on this scene, by far, but you cant expect him to be the voice of reason and wisdom, after the first arc, he always adressed melty and the king, at least inside his head (light novel), as bitch and trash, you would never literally hear him saying their names, ever... if you are looking for a moral story, drop of this show, since MC will most of the times still tread that line of grey where you understood to some degree, but also disagree and feel very conflicted about the ways he adress stuff sometimes.

Honestly good episode but this is where the series should have ended cause with the final three episodes (I think) it's just gonna be a rushed ark with Rishia's proper introduction and L'ark's introduction so I'm a little bit pissed but was still satisfied.

It is 25 episodes, so they do have time to properly do Cal Mira, if they cut some slight fat here and there.
Will feel a bit more rushed than last arc, but hey, Rezero S1 adapted 9 volumes, this one is going for 5, and both have 25 episodes.
This was a much better decison, than having them adaptating volumes 6 and 7, or worst, adapting till volume 6 leaving it at like a cliffhanger, something that certain people, like an idiot called Demyx_IX, would have been fine with, which would have been the dumbest decision of adaptating ever done.

Not really gonna say to much here its just it a bit of a shame how Naufumi cynicism has been watered down. you had the web novel version how basically hated everything, the manga/light novel version how had it just right amount of cynicism and kindness in my opinion, then you have the anime that removes a part of what makes naufumi, naufumi, his hatred. this episode made it seem like all is forgiven and for me, for what happened to him and how his character was throughout the rest of the series does not match up and its a shame as it also made the queen of melromac look a lot weaker then she actually is( she is a crafty bugger ) not one to offer her own life but is supposed to be calculating and realistic in reality its why naufumi and the queen get along so well. All in all i am glad the storey is still going in the same direction as the light novel/ manga but i believe the execution scene and how it played out does not faithfully represent some of the charecters in particular the queen and naufumi.

I really really liked this version of the story as the manga was a bit too rushed and it seemed to have a few inconsistencies within the story...

Too bad there wasn't a face worthy of the one in the manga

I just feel like Naofumi is very underdeveloped. He is presented with that alternative moral standpoint compared to a traditional isekai MC, and without further reason he's suddenly telling Raphtalia that it's okay to spare the slavedriver's life ect.
It's just a very sudden change, with very cheap and poorly written solutions, which makes me dislike the anime. Although I have seen that Naofumi does not turn out like he did in the anime in the LNs which I am very satisfied about.

After this, the show will really lose its entertainment and things will just lose meaning like his shield of rage yet will still be conveniently used. This would have been a far better episode to be the last episode. They should have put more time and effort into the previous episodes.

Dude if you're a fan of the source material, you should be really pissed with how they butchered the past few episodes. Screw the justice porn for a second, screw Trash and Bitch getting what they deserved. What the studio did with this episode was so far from satisfying, that I'm actually annoyed at the people that read the WN/LN/manga and praising the episode.

yup, the anime sucks, I just wanted to see that one scene, that's all I wanted, and its not even 1/10 of the manga's quality, so what, I enjoy more the source material 90% of the time, still I like to see adaptations, even if they are shit, I remember the manga with a smile, that's enough for me

Naofumi should act more elegant in front of Queen herself. I understand he is pissed off and stuff, but Queen was not mean towards him and adding some more etiquette to his behaviour would show Naofumi as somebody classy. Besides, like her or not, she is the ruler of this country, lol.

This episode was lame to be honest. So this is the moment we have been waiting for? Lame punishment for Myne and her father (giving them new "names" are ones of the cringiest things I saw), cleaning Naofumi's name in a jiffy (even though anti-Shield Hero propaganda was performed strongly)... and what now? New adventures?

If this was a season's finale, then I would complain only about bad writing and awkward moments, 'cause as a finale per se it would've been alright. But it was not a final episode. We still have several episodes until this season ends.

This episode was justice porn for all of us. I've been waiting since episode 1 to see when "Bitch" and "Trash" would finally get struck by karma. So satisfying to watch when all of Myne's lies got revealed. I prefer them getting branded those names over dying as that would've been too good for them.

And Myne really is a pathological liar. She lied about every question without any hesitation you'd almost think she was telling the truth

Just a name change huh? Granted those are very fitting, but they deserved to be slave labor or something.

Myne clearly hasn't learned a damn thing and doesn't regret what she did. She kept lying right up to the end. I HATE HER!!!!

Plus they are still alive so it's possible they could still do something to mess with Naofumi.

the story progress in the episode is ok, but the directing can get better. if the queen doesn't want her family to be executed, why put them the sentence anyway? maybe the director can put it some scene where the queen is troubled with the sentence or to show pressure from the public.
if you want good story, read novel. if you want good graphic, read manga. anime is beyond that.

Well... and finally, the so waited payback came... and I didn't feel anything. It wasn't satisfying in the slightest, just laughable. As I said before, both Malty and the King were so poorly written I never considered them a real threat and as a result, the whole execution scene felt just like cheap "justice porn" to satisfy those people who actually felt hatred towards these one-dimensional characters.

So basically, Malty is a pathological liar who screwed Naofumi for no apparent reason and Aultcray hates him just because he was summoned as a Shield hero. Talking about being nonsensical, a previous user of the shield did "something" to his family ("something" they didn't even care to explain, by the way) and solely for that reason, Naofumi had to pay for the broken dishes... come on...

And of course, as expected from this show, the explanation of why the Queen was away for almost 20 eps. was poorly detailed as well. "Oh, by the way, I left someone to rule Melromarc in my name but he somehow died during the first wave"... nice way to use plot conveniences when you can't come up with a better solution, author-san.

That said, this was a quite mediocre episode overall. I seriously can't believe the score (8.26 at this moment) this anime is having...

Yeah... I'm pretty disappointed in the way all of this played out. Their reasoning for hating the shield hero never made sense. Then you have this failed execution. Apparently trying to assassinate royalty is okay as long as you get a funny nickname for botching the attempt. Cancelling the execution was such a cop out.

tbh, I liked the manga adaptation's take on the events of this episode than in the anime's. I was hoping to see a certain moment animated, where Naofumi says "Kill her! Put her to death!" (one of the best moments in the manga IMO), but it didn't happen. Well, it was still an enjoyable and satisfying episode nonetheless. Nice to see the public shaming of Bitch and Trash.

they got it deserved, but changing their names to bitch and trash is nice enough, tou what tells you that bitch won't come back to her old way, tou is true that it should be hard with her new name. I would like for Naofumi to having fun in the party, but I guess that's just not how he is. And I would like to know what was his backstory with the shield hero that he despises him so much and think it will happen with Naofumi too. The devil power of the shield are dangerous and it could cause real problems for the rest or even himself, but maybe not coming back of it like always.

It would have been the perfect point to end the season but I also like that they continued the series.

Him not allowing the princess and king to be killed felt oddly satisfying. Weird, because during the first 12 or so episodes, I swear I wanted them gone more than anyone.

Naofumi going along with everyone seeing him as a real hero left a bitter taste in my mouth. I wanted him to yell and get angry at the people that screwed him over or at least make them grovel. Instead, he was like 'oh cool, no hard feelings'. I know its the right thing to do but I swear no person in their early 20's is that forgiving after being screwed over bad.
Recommend me an anime
