I feel like it'd be pretty difficult for an already-finished-airing anime to usurp the #1 FMAB; with a score of 9.25 that's pretty hard to surpass as it is, but it would take even more for it if there is an already established base score from the MAL community that is (probably significantly) lower than that. The most likely way for this to happen is for a singular film entry to do it (i.e. kind of like 'your name' or 'Koe no Katachi' - except even better). So it'd be in the future, but I don't see it being any time soon, and I really don't see a series having as high of likelihood of being able to pull it off as a single-entry movie. |

| We were so close memeing Pingu to #1 though. Bunch of fucking wet blankets killed it unfortunately. I just wanted 1 screenshot. Honestly though, the top list has quite a few heavyweights that haven't been budged for years and I expect them to stay there for the most part. Heck I'm surprised 3-gatsu no lion S2 is even so far up there, but it does show that cult following shows with small but passionate fanbases might still be insufficient to carry them to #1, even after the culling of scores droppers of the shows in the first season. We've got maybe a few movies like Kimi no Na Wa and Koe no Katachi shooting up there recently, which makes me think it might well be a hit movie that could possibly get that #1. |

There are so many fans with blind devotion to the franchise that even something like Stardust Crusaders has whopping 8.50 rating and Golden Wind which is statistically the weakest entry according to MAL is right now at 8.89. It's not hard to imagine Steel Ball Run going above 9, assuming of course, that the adaptation isn't like Berserk 2016. |

| FMA:B has been first for so long and its score hasn't stopped to rise over the years so I highly doubt we'll get a number 1 that will challenge it long enough. At most we'll get a new hyped sequel that gets the top stop for a few weeks and then drop afterwards. Maybe if another of the highest rated manga get a complete and faithful adaptation, we might see some change but until then FMA's spot is secure. |

| Not sure, but hopefully something that deserves to be number one. Although I feel like that might not happen soon. Nothing 'number one' material has aired yet imo. I quite like fullmetal being number one, since its well executed. I'm usually not too crazy about shonen, but fma makes it fun and has real life elements in it as well, like the military and genocide part, and the 'dangers of science' meaning you can find within the show. If you obsess over it as much as I did, you can really see the philosophy and research the author put into it. The characters are really likeable as well. If something were to replace it, i'd want it to be a show that is good enough to make me emotional, and deals with heavy real life problems, even if it wasnt in a modern setting, like fma did (albeit fma was more fun, but this is anime, so its bound to be pretty silly at times). |

| Interesting question.. Honestly I'd say nothing made yet. We notice the scores of the top anime have actually been going up by .01 every so often, meaning the only plausible way anything currently out beats it is if an already extremely-high-up-there anime gets into headlines or gets some huge event which gets more people to make MAL accounts/watch it and score it. Your Name is almost a full .1 off, and I doubt this type of thing will happen. Some hyped upcoming anime with huge mass appeal is the only thing that can beat FMA:B. Things that appeal to only some have less reviewers and less fans, meaning the strict reviewers and average fans weigh down on the score more. Of course, there'll always be haters too, so if a show is amazing but has a small fanbase, it won't get up there either. |

| I agree that Steel Ball Run and Vinland Saga (if it is properly adapted) have chances, also The Promised Neverland ... FMAB set the bar quite high though.. Or maybe some new original, especially a movie can steal the spot.. I still can't believe how Kimi no na Wa and Koe no Katachi can have such high rating.. They are not bad, but still it is quite overrated, especially Kimi no na Wa (Koe no Katachi manga is great, but the movie just doesn't feel that great).. |
