Idk why but I find some parts of the episode to be kinda silly.

Seems like there's a bit of a rude lady this episode though.
I think Hazuma is always ready for a challenge so...

Not much man service this week :o

So the black guy and blondie are deserters from Vietnam war ? No wonder why they can't go to hospital.

Dr. Honma here ! (Although it's only in Hazama's imagination)

I find it hilarious that the same guy who in episode 2 casually (and perfectly) performed a full face transplant 50 years before the first time it was done in the real world is now saying "I can't perform miracles".

That said, much better episode this time. Convinced me not to drop the show.

Still, Hazama has delivered yet again and shows that he's just better than everyone in this series but I can't stand how they take advantage of him

Definitely. I get that they're trying to show how Black Jack became so cynical later on, but this is pretty heavy-handed. That woman's reactions and breakdown were ridiculous.

Man just because they're in an organization for "justice" doesn't mean they're entitled to have their buddy saved, alright. Even threatening the only person who can save the man wouldn't do anything, if you shoot him, the guy still won't be saved. So ungrateful too, "are you trying to get me killed?" No, the opposite, actually. What a twist though that he was working for CIA. Hazama meets all the shitty patients there are in the world huh.

It was interesting though when Hazama was having an internal conflict about whether or not to save the man. It does feel like you're turning a blind eye or running away if you can do something about it, yet you're not. The only reason for turning away is that you don't have a medical license, yet you are perfectly more than capable of performing the procedure. It's a big reason of course, but I liked the narration at the end, "At that time, Hazama did not know that there were no right or wrong actions to take in medicine."

It seems like every episode, Hazama meets more and more fucked up people. It's a shame that people always seem to be taking advantage of him.

What I found really interesting about this episode was that internal conflict he had with himself about whether or not he should go through with the procedure. I just thought that was a good way to illustrate just how difficult his situation was. Anyway, looking forward to next episode's asshole-of-the-week lol.

I hate it when someone gets in trouble for doing the right thing. At least they released him but I feel like he'll face more repercussions for operating on that deserter.

I loved it! The beginning was so cute/funny it was hard to believe that Black Jack is the same Black Jack from the original series, but it was so good to see him acting so silly.

The woman was an asshole and so was the guy he saved, but oh well, that's why he turned out to be the cynical man he is, as someone already said in this thread. I was really glad when he shuted that woman's mouth too.

Great episode. Really presented the characters in an honest light: people try to do what they think is right, and extremists tend to be extreme about their beliefs.

The great thing about every Black Jack series has always been how it deals with EXTREMES in both people and medicine. Neither is presented as real-world to the point of a general standard of either. These are the far left/right of any ideal, just like Hazama winds up dealing with the most technical, and sometimes unrealistic, medical issues.
That being said, this episode was neither pro war, nor anti-protester. There are always idealists that let their ideals influence their judgement to unreasonable degrees. The Vietnam Era is wrought with "peaceful" anti-war protesters using violence to make their points. Hypocrisy exists because some people cannot see reality through their ideals.

I agree that there has been some anti-anti-war activist undertones so far, but nothing that could be characterised as pro-war or jingoistic.

Funny. I'm no doctor nor would I want to be and I understand the risks performing the operation would have on his career, but to just walk away and let a man die would have been seriously messed up. Anyone who would have walked away just because they didn't like the people seem pretty rotten to me.

It's awful that the woman forced him to do it, but what should she have done? Let the one person who could save his life walk away? I don't get the episode's intentions to portray these two as selfish when they were pretty much just trying to save his life. If the guy had been an actual deserter he would've likely been saved via a legal operation and then shipped off to die in Vietnam. Either way he would die. Would the best course of action be to just let him die? I don't think a person should be able to deny saving another person's life if they can help.

That's really awful what that jackass CIA agent did to the actual deserter. That scum lied to them and then got his life saved but he still only thought of himself. People in this topic are hating on the female protester but this guy is the one who deserved to die. He probably sent the other guy off to his death.

Near the end, he said "There were no right or wrong actions to take in medicine." That depends on how you look at it. I get what he's implying; from a moral standpoint, it makes sense if you do what you feel is right at the time...but from a literal perspective, then all sorts of shit can get fucked up, i.e that recent news story about the doctor leaving a baby's severed head inside the mother's womb, whom later died from the complications. If that's not wrong, I don't know what is.

Seems like all of this is swept under the rug because the CIA agent Smith went back undercover into the organization to continue his mission of finding deserters, and possibly taking out the group (so we can assume we'll never see Hazama's underclassman and the women ever again), especially since only Hazama was detained and not those two, as they still needed them to show them their escape routes and roundup the rest of them. But, none of that matters to Hazama.

This is also a pivotal moment in Hazama's life, since he made the decision to do what he felt was right, no matter the repercussions of possibly never getting his medical license.

3 Episodes in, and Young Black Jack certainly keeps that bitter-sweet undertone...in this case, he saved a life, but that life would continue his undercover mission of bringing the deserters back to the hellish battlefield.

Instead of commenting on the political connotation behind this anime and this episode in particular: at how it 'dehumanises' activism and desertion and so, I want to point out the medical aspect of this episode in particular. Decompressive craniectomy is one hell of a surgery to begin with, and Hazama managed to pull it off with such ease, especially during the drilling process. It immediately reminded me of the J-Drama Jin, during which the first episode involved the same procedure to remove the blood tumour in the brain from trauma. The anime could have afforded to show more of the surgery, instead of spending too much time in rather trivial matters IMO.

Another beautifully done episode. I loved how humanistic they portray this show to be. War is definitely no joke, and you cannot help but see the many points of views in this very episode. Each party believes their cause is right and just, but in the end it matters little when you are laid out on a treatment table, fighting for your life.

I won't say that Anti-war activists are wrong, or that a government forcing mandatory conscription into the army is wrong or whatnot, but in the end it didn't matter at all. Because Hazama saved the CIA agent's life, he ended up ruining the lives of those deserters and the activists (probably). I think the show went out of it's way to paint the activists in a bad light (they were too extreme in their beliefs imho), just so you wouldn't feel so bad about their end when the dust settled, but even if the activists weren't as extreme as portrayed in the episode, Hazama can't be faulted for saving a life.

I think this show does really well to show us how no one, be it an innocent boy, a mafia boss, or an undercover agent for a tyrannical government, should be judged by the doctor for things that they'd done (or will do) when they're on the operation table. That should always be the essential mantra for all doctors. Guilty or innocent, a life is a life, doctors really have not right to dispute that, and at the same time they should not be held responsible for what happens to that life after they've saved it.
