Amazing visuals and great animation, as expected from production I.G.
noticed a sphere like thingy on top of the machine calibre's head while it is flying, not quite sure what it is.

And man... the pirates just got wiped in an instant. Despite what they are doing, something like that is just overkill lol.

The sphere thing on top of the Machine, I'd say it's some kind of anti-gravity device that pulls the machine towards the sphere... Makes sense I think...

So this is a healing anime? While I wouldn't mind that at all, Madoka was supposed to be a regular magical girl anime... Either it's war going rampart on a planetary scale, or aliens/humans invade the world from outer space.

By the way, nice tech power. With that kind of firepower, it's like you nuking an ant... Also, judging by the fact the Earth is still intact and has a liquid ocean with a breathable atmosphere, the timescale must be within a billion years. Either that, or the model of the lifecycle of the Sun was inaccurate or the orbit of the Earth somehow shifted.
Umm hi.. Is this really a healing anime?
It looked really cool.. Then I checked out this forum.. I didn't realize it's same scriptwriter as Madoka.. Is this really not supposed to go on that direction? Otherwise I have to prepare my heart.. I stopped watching Madoka after Mami got eaten :(

I actually wanted to see something different from him - but who knows maybe someone bought him a cat and now he wants to try doing series where most of characters aren't hurt or end up dead/mentally affected.

That would be nice as he has some good ideas and this is opportunity to use it in more lighthearted form.
I am with you here. I actually wish that he would expand his scope to do something that does not always involves grimness or terrible fate. This time he insisted he wants to write something positive, to give hope for youngsters becoming members of the broad society. I hope he is telling the whole truth this time.

At first the episode felt like it was dragging, but Ledo and Chamber's overkill attack balanced things out. I don't think the natives are going to be all thrilled in the face of such easy destruction, especially since the duo casually vaporised the pirates. Really drives home that these two are creatures of war.

Your subs felt fine to me. thanks! Checked commie vs utw subs for ep 1 and liked UTW better. i guess we'll have to see for 2-3. agreed with the amount of liberties took with the UTW-vivid ep2sub. it really bothered me since 'ok' was translated to different things everytime ledo said it.... sigh. life goes on~

other than that, really like the atmosphere of this anime. music/graphics make it super enjoyable. also amy and ledo are really likeable. but will there be romance (please >_< aah!).

Yea, not to mention when Amy starts yelling sugoi 10x times and they translate it to 3 different sentences.

Pika pika pika?

... trolling UTW-Vivid subs are trolling.

Imo best subs so far is HorribleSubs. Good translation, good choices of words. Not trying to be so unique they lose good translation or flow in the sentence.

Just watched some anime and the new UTW-vivid release.

Felt like they troll subbed sometimes, hehe.
I understand I took my own subs too literary, but theirs are changed so much it's not even the same thing that's said on several points. Makes me think that maybe I could really keep subbing and still hold their level of quality if I just relax my English a bit and make it sound more flowing.

Sad that they changed annihilate, was a good translation that sounded badass in my opinion!
I hope commie has better taste than UTW-vivid, feels like they forced themselves to be so far from my subs that they lost out on some good translation (since they changed like 280 / 290 lines it's not just a feeling probably. Many changes were better, just saying 95%+ change is forcing it in some cases, imo).

Looking forward to next week, going to be epic I hope!

Because you've talked about it, I especially looked it up to compare.

Indeed, sometimes, it's a bit strange. Not that it's always bad; in fact, in some cases I think it was better than what you said (for instance, compared with the 'sinking' of Red, I think they made a more liberal, but more original, good and natural (context-wise) sounding translation. On other instances, I thought your tranlation was superior, as you said, with the 'annihilate', but also the way you translated Chamber, with short, 'unjoined' words en sentences. Quite fitting for a difficult machine-translating effort of an AI. Theirs was a bit too fluid, like it was talking normally.

Also..why are they translating the name as 'Ledo'? That a pretty big mistake to make, for such a semi-professional group. The issue of his name has already been addressed: Japanese have difficulty with the 'r' and 'l' (this is not a confabulated trope), and the 'o' is an affix Japanese often add to English words ending on t or d. Besides, in all official translated versions, it's already been established it's 'Red', I think?

But anyway, the translation wasn't bad, but neither was yours. I did notice a lot less grammatical and spelling-mistakes in theirs, but then again, they took their time and probably had many proof-reads on forehand, while you didn't and worked under time-pressure. But you did deliver it to us 5 days sooner, and still with high quality, so you have our thanks. :-)

I'm hoping you'll do the same for ep3, if others take too long again too. :-) Maybe a small proofread by a third party just before release would even better the translation, for the simple reason two pair of eyes see more than one, but for the rest I think yours is pretty good as it is and has been done faster also.

Different genre of anime you're thinking about, there! ;-)

In fact, seen her shocked and a bit dazed expression after Red's overkill, I very strongly doubt any cheering or happy (or ecchi) mood with her, nor with Amy or anyone else of the crew for that matter.

I think they'll be all grateful for the wisdom of the captain to stay on the safe side and not to mess with Red/Chamber until they know more about it. If they tried what the blonde dude suggested, it would have been THEM that got vaporised.

I think this truth is sinking in by now.

No, the last scenes clearly show that Red will not be given the appraisal he thinks he'll get, but rather a sermon about human life, or/and fear for his power. I think his annihilation didn't really help in establishing a good 'working-relation' with the crew, as he intended. ;-)

I'm very curious for the next episode. When does it come out, again?

Very good series so far. It's mix of Turn a Gundam, Miyazaki and Waterworld done right. The colours and art are still outstanding and the character designs are gorgeous.

Red I think is going to find out that life is valued a bit differently than in his society. Everyone is going to be shit scared of him when he returns to Gargantia.

Wow, I am amazed. This one is soooo gooood!

Beside its outstanding art, we get to see more and more about the story of this anime. The ships, the machines, the scenery, the atmosphere, sum them up and we can see how deep and detailed it is. I feel like watching a fairy tale, combining with the music, it's seem like I can just forget the reality and go with the flow of the story.

The best thing that this episode gave me is the scenery at night. The starry night, the sparkling ocean, reminds me of life of pi, you know, that relaxing, overwhelming feeling you get ... it's just simply awesome!

I just hope that 12 eps are not too short to convey the whole story, or, if possible, a second season, which I will definitely watch!

Can't be all that arbitrary: a name is a name, after all.

Ever heard the French say 'Michael Jackson' or 'David Niven'? Sounds completely different too, yet the name is and remains the same. Names don't change (certainly not when written) depending on how it's pronounced.

As far as I'm aware, the official translations speak of 'Red'. As in: the colour red. That doesn't change whether the Japanese (in story or out story) pronounce it differently.

So, logic would suggest that one uses the official name, and that fansubs which only go for the phonetics are incorrect in doing so.

His name is レド or Redo. This is not the same as the katakana for 'red' which is レッド or Reddo. Japanese R is between English R and L. The following 'o' IS pronounced by the Japanese, they don't drop it so it is not just 'Red', it is 'Redo' pronounced like the Japanese pronounce it. Listen to the dialog and you can hear it.

Very good episode, a bit slow paced but not in a bad way at all. I like to see Redo (Red? Ledo?) interact with the local humans, trying to figure out what to do.

Seems like a freaking badass robot/machine/suit thing, it can even analyze who are enemies and who are "friends". I'm very curious what'll happen in the next episode, too bad there are only 12 episodes though :(

Are people seriously complaining about Redo's (just gonna call him that) decision of killing those pirates? Like seriously? Did you guys even see episode 1?
I know it's been stated multiple times but how can one be surprised he'll immediately take drastic actions when there's an enemy attack? He grew up in a world where enemy attacks were a matter of life and death, not something where the enemy just takes away the treasure.
Besdies, after Amy asked for his assistance in such a way I'm not surprised he though it was a very serious matter, why else would the people that barely knew/trustes him ask for his assistence? If you think along those lines it's very, very natural for him to act like this.

And it's Urobutchers work, what else do you expect? If no one (major or minor character) would have died in the serie at all, I would be a bit disappointed tbqh (not counting the lost soldiers in episode 1 since we didn't even knew most of their faces).

The pirates meant business. If this had been Star Trek he would have set his phasers on stun and they would have happily handcuffed the pirates and sent them to the brig... but this is not Star Trek. Honestly I don't know what else Redo and Chamber could have done while helping unless they were supposed to just fire warning shots and scare them first until Bellows got shot.

I think people are right that they will be shocked at how it went down but there really wasn't any other way to do it.

I was exaggerating, but anyhow, someone from Gargantia is going to have to give Red a place to stay and food... Red is not going to sit around on the deck with guns pointed at him for long. He and Chamber have the option of going back underwater and into stasis, as Chamber recommended.

I say its either Bellows or Ridget who will take Red in, despite people's fear. Amy does not have the status to do anything.

Where are the "official translated versions" you are talking about? In Japanese his name is レド so it is either Ledo or Redo but of course the latter sounds like the verb "redo" so it is better to write it as Ledo. As for "Red" that just does not make sense because Red would have been written as レッド (Reddo) in Japanese.

Anyway, hpulley also said the same too: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=577931&show=440#msg21436031

To me "Red" does not sound quite right as a translation of his name. Anyway, the bottom line is Ledo is the best translation out of the Japanese words used for the name.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.
