They really had Mina standing there the entire time lol

I just realized how funny it would be if they actually executed him, like its the end of the season, lets do an original ending. There needs to be an original anime like this, where you think the dude is going to make it because they always do and the story is just like "nope".
Because it does take all the tension out of this when you know he is not going to die because obviously the manga continues.

I enjoyed this anime, even though it was nothing special I think I will pick up the manga because I dont have anything to read right now.
Its a weaker attack on titan and nothing special story wise, though I guess number 9 might potentially be interesting. The animation really helped to make this stand out, so maybe the manga does not catch me.
Thinking about just how generic this is just makes me appreciate early AoT even more. Funny how stuff can come out a decade later, obviously take inspiration from it and just be creatively worse all around.

Personally I dont hate Kafka, but since beeing "the old guy" is his standout characteristic I think it would be nice if he actually behaved like it. He is as energetic as a teenager. Having a calm, wise MC instead of a screamy, funny MC would be a nice change.

See you in season 2.

PS: The OP grew on me so damn much over time I will really miss it.

Not the most exciting finale besides the first half of the episode with the rampaging Kaiju No. 8 body and Kafka finally regaining control, but this one warranted a bit of a slower ending because the punches have been constantly rolling for a while now, we gotta slow down somewhere lol. And thankfully Kikoru’s dad wasn’t the pure asshole he appeared to be, he was pretty much the only one in the room that was in favor of keeping Kafka around and not turning him into a weapon (are these guys Destiny fans lol) and I’m sure Mina’s words were a part of what swayed him, so Kafka is here to stay but I’m sure he’ll be kept on a tight leash, and with that after credits scene showing No. 9 planning to bring No. 8 to their side, this might not be the end of Kafka’s struggle to control his body. But at least everyone is happy for now, a good place to end on.

And that was it for the first season, and I’m glad I can say that because Season 2 has already been announced, I’m definitely happy about that because this was a very exciting show. It’s not my favorite shonen series I’ve seen by a good margin, but it was a lot of fun and had a lot of cool things going for it regarding the kaiju (some very awesome designs and powers) and the way the defense force works, not to mention how great it looked in the animation department, art was certainly awesome too. And I gotta say I’m with some others that more could be done regarding Kafka being in his 30s, but other than that I really liked him as a MC, he made for some hilarious moments but also got serious when he needed to. And I also really enjoyed Kikoru, she had a rough start but grew on me quickly, and with that battle axe she’s even more badass, I’m definitely looking forward to more of her next season, as well as more Mina action, hopefully besides just shooting a cannon lol.

And there were a lot of haters, but I gotta say I’m a big fan of both the OP and ED being done by western artists, I typically don’t listen to either OneRepublic or YUNGBLUD (hadn’t even heard of him until this show) but they both killed it and fit the show very well, I especially found myself loving the ED which was a favorite of mine this season. And I guess now I wait for Season 2, I imagine it won’t be too long until we get it because of the quick announcement.

Kaiju No. 8 was a pretty simple shounen at the end of the day, and that's fine. Good fights, good animation, just a fun time. It had a couple twists, which kind of worries me if they played all their cards already, but we'll see what the sequel has in store for us. It offers more or less what monster hunting shows are expected to be, with some dumb comedy at times. Not much to say except it was entertaining enough.

Low 7/10.

It was a great action anime, the only thing that bothered me a little was the MC being too silly at certain moments, but other than that it was a really cool anime.
Ps: why the hell is this anime rated PG-13 if it is full of violence and profanity? 🤨

Man Kikoru, how dumb would you have to be to keep on "believing" in Kafka even when your father (who's also your only remaining family member) is getting ragdolled. I know its all for the suspense but having the flashback of her talking about how she'd 'kill him if he becomes a threat' just leaves a bad taste.

While this series started with me getting annoyed at Kafka due to his silliness his character grew on me, same with Kikoru who initially came across as a self-centered spoiled brat but also had some good character development. Speaking of Kikoru, it was a nice assist she gave to Kakfa when she spoke to her father about him in the last episode (Mina too in this episode) which may have been the difference between eliminating him or not, although it also makes sense to use his ability since her father sees that the kaiju threat is increasing (why can't the board see that as well?)

Anyway, I enjoyed watching this and I'm looking forward to the next season.

This is basically solo levelling of this season. Where only people who watch it for mindless action and good animation enjoy it. Writing doesn't matter because it is probably one of the most generic and predictable battle shounen.

This is one of the most basic level writing I have seen in anime and manga. It almost feels like the writer was not even trying. But just because the art and fight are good, it sells well.

I'm already catch upto latest chapter of the manga. It is still generic and predictable, it's get even worse later. So any hope of series turning good, or suddenly becoming completely different from it's previous season is loss.

I think the manga was just okay. the anime was the same thing with less charm, worse art, extreme pacing issues, shitty op, shitty ed, and somehow they thought this would end up as a hype beast. to sum it up, it was a poor adaptation of something average that never delivered.

Can't believe we are already at the end of season 1.

It was fantastic, probably one of the best adaptions of a recent manga I've seen in a while.

The animation was so clean, especially during that last fight in this episode and we also got a banger OP. Really couldn't have hoped for anything more than that.

I hope they can pull off season 2 just as well since the pacing in the manga got kinda bad after they changed the release schedule.

So....when Kafka used his own body as a decoy in Kaiju form as it slammed into the wall, regenerating his entire body just from his core (pretty hard-core, pun intended), what did they do with the now discarded husk that was his old fleshy body? I have no idea how Kaiju weapons are made, but if they don't need the core to still be a part of it, then they can surely use his body, like a shed exoskeleton shell of a lobster after a molt.

Overall, a great first season of the classic man's humanity becoming a monster story, as is his namesake Kafka being the author of the Metamorphosis.

Looking forward to season 2, with equally awesome music.

I don’t understand all the hate coming for this show. Why hate watch it till the end if you don’t enjoy it? What’s the point? In my honest opinion if you aren’t enjoying something drop it and move on to something different. Don’t force yourself through a show in hopes it’ll get better. I will never understand that. For me I loved the show. I thought it was the best new seasonal we had this season. Looking forward to the new season and the new chapters that will release between now and then. Figured it would end where it did, but like I’ve been saying the whole time, if you enjoyed this show and don’t want to wait for the second season and are hesitant about picking up the manga i definitely recommend it 💯

Ripping off own torso so you can immediately throw a second punch was wild. Never seen that before.

Punching through your own heart to stop yourself from rampaging was also great, even if in hindsight it was an obvious solution.

It was a very predictable direction with what would happen, reminiscent of stuff I've seen with Attack on Titan or Kabaneri in a way where the MC is a hybrid that's working as a weapon for the humans against other kaiju as long as there's enough humanity in them to maintain themselves. I liked some of the additions with Mina's brief speech but I just wish her characterization stood out a lot more beforehand to make her interactions feel more meaningful. If I have to give credit to one thing, I did diss Production I.G in the earlier episodes for this being one of the weaker animated shows I've seen from them in some time but they turned up with the last few episodes here, it was good. The episode was not bad but just too stretched out for something predictable with the stakes and tension with the payoff not being quite there.

Overall, this was just another battle shounen in the books, probably more boring and uninspired plot-wise than I've seen compared to some of the last few big battle shounen anime I've seen, probably since Black Clover. Characters looked wonky for the most part (especially Kikoru) and were way too one-dimensional and boring, lack of real tension and excitement present with the anime not even showing random officers suffering to make the kaiju look threatening compared to what Attack on Titan did and overall, the show feels very interchangeable with a lot of others. Kafka's an older protagonist that acts like a kid so watching him hasn't been fun either, nor did his characterization make me care for what happened to him in the last two episodes (not like anything surprising would have happened with the outcome). I can understand if people enjoy the show for what it is but there's just not much for me to latch on to that I would remember for a long time with this series sadly. And now there's a sequel soon that would continue its boring, overly predictable and cliche plot direction and characterization but that wasn't a surprise whatsoever.
@animejas hold this ratio homie

Read the manga then, you will probably be hyped way more than this, problem is the manga seems to go downhill from what people reading the last 30 chapters seem to say.

Animation was ramped up for this final episode, and the continuation of last episode's battle looked just as good. Really nice direction and sound design, it helped emphasize the sheer power between the two. Really loved the clever moves that Kafka pulled off, especially that core swap. I also love the torso twist to get another punch in. Of course, our boy Kafka is able to pull through. Now we get to the next part of the manga where everyone knows Kafka is a Kaiju and they'll use that to their advantage for upcoming battles.

Overall, I'm really pleased with this adaptation. Stellar animation, good music, excellent sound design, and it kept a steady pace without feeling rushed or slow. Admittedly, I'm a big fan of the manga. I started reading when it was about 30 or so chapters in. It sucked me in immediately with the gnarly kaiju designs and overall premise of an older protagonist being able to transform into an ultra powerful kaiju himself. One of the issues I had is that characters outside of Kafka and Reno feel a little one dimensional. Next season should cover Kikoru's own backstory in much more detail, which will help flesh her out. Plus the addition of Narumi, whom we were introduced at the very end of this episode. He's one of the much more interesting characters of the series.

So far, the battles we've seen so far have been good, but they continue to get better as the series goes on, I think the final fight between Kafka and Director Shinomiya. So next season should be a lot more intense.

I've seen a lot of comments and reviews about how this is the most generic of generic, which I don't think is entirely true. I think this does lean into a lot of shounen tropes, but so do most shounen. It's how it tells its story, or how things unfold, is how it should be judged. Kafka continues to struggle with his humanity, which I find pretty compelling, but I do think there could be a few other elements that could be introduced to help set it apart from the standard shounen formula. I think the fact that he's older and kind of over the hill is another compelling element that makes it more unique than your average teenage shounen protag. But I think its Kafka's heart that keeps readers coming back, and I think that transferred pretty well to the anime.

I do think they did a bad job with the art though. No idea what they were trying to do, but it doesn't look near as good as the manga. Were they just trying to appeal to a wider audience? I'll admit that it's clear that Crunchyroll has a lot of stock in this show, and there's a push to try to make it big. But the thing is, we already have three years of manga sales to prove that this is a hit. I think each volume has sold over 1 million, which is really impressive.

It's clear that a second cour/season was always in the works, but there are some that are still surprised by the announcement. If you look at recent trends, most Shonen Jump adaptations have high budgets and always get at least one sequel.

Really excited to see more now that Kafka no longer has to hide his powers. New elements will be introduced or explored more next season, which should make things more interesting.

Overall, 8/10.

A very nice season finale setting up for the next stretch of the story. The people complaining about "gEnEriC sHouNen" need to get dropped from their high horses with a kick, from the very beginning his motivation was wanting to be a cool hero for his childhood friend - if that didn't clue you into what the story would be about, then your intellectual abilities aren't anywhere near what you think.

Gimme that season 2 asap. This was the best thing I’ve seen from jump since Jigokuraku. As a big Toku/Godzilla fan I loved it.

This was a “2nd season is imminent and this is just a set up” finale if I’ve ever seen one lol. The Kafka and Shinomiya fight was fire, ended up being a little generic in the end but it’s cool. Isao not as bad as I thought. Last week I ripped on him for being this universe’s Thunderbolt Ross, but I guess he did take Kikoru’s plea to heart and gave Kafka a chance to prove himself.

Fitting that in the end, it’s Mina or at least Kafka’s mental perception of her, that keeps him on the right path and snapped him back in control. She’s been his guiding light ever since they were kids.

“We dont want to hear your personal opinion” ok so why tf did you invite her if you don’t want her to sit down at the table or give her actual insight as someone who lives and works with the dude on a daily basis lmao.

The general staff old heads had no intention of even hearing her out, good thing Isao has a brain. You really think you can continue fighting these Kaiju with the same methods as they get stronger and stronger? PLUS Isao is literally using Kaiju 2’s abilities so all that “precedent” shit is stupid 💀

Don’t really matter whether they officially designate him as Kaiju or Human, long as my boy is alive and allowed to continue serving alongside Mina and the others we good. It’s been a very eventful last few months for everyone in the division and now that the cat’s out the bag with Kafka, can’t wait to see where things go from here.

Kaiju number 9 claims he’s got human intelligence figured out, but in traditional shonen villain form, he’s forgetting that’s not the most important thing humans have on their side. It’s their hearts. Hype for s2
@Marinate1016 They made it clear they did it as a formality because they want to seem like they're being military official, following procedure, but their prejudices are blinding them.

The precedent wasn't using Kaiju based weapons, but using a Kaiju as combat force (as in a soldier), which is pretty different than just repurposing parts like they do for several other numbered Kaiju we'll see in time

That speech from Mina is seemingly original, I'm not sure most of this meeting even happens in the manga. The decision is the same, but Mina wasn't there, though Kafka flashes back to the point Mina does, so it still works out. If one didn't realize the context or such, you'd probably be a bit confused about what's happening, but the manga

9's evolving nature continues to be interesting, not something you see a lot in villains that I can think of, constantly avoiding death and evolving in a way that feels natural versus something like All For One where he just continues to plot and use people
