I saw Rainbow 3 times and this episode is so fucking sad and disturbing... I never felt really sad watching something, just cry for feel pity on the character's history is something simple, a lot of anime have this, but when I finished, i realized how sad animes can be and how sad that "period" was, i just feel like finished something shocking like tv shows as "black mirror or how to get away with murder" you know? Something that make you think about. Is one of my fave episodes ever

Good job Meg!
You don't have a mother, a father, and now you don't have a brother. Nice!

Sincerely, I didn't feel all those feels... it's so exaggerated that I can't take it so serious... I was all the time "wtf..?"..

Damn, I really hope that Meg manages to escape from the foster parent, because we all knew from the moment we saw him that he isn't going to be a good father.
Poor Joe, he was raped by that old woman.
Turtle's story was sad too, he lost his sister in the bombings.

Sweet lord I think this anime is going to be 26 episodes of pure suffering.

She had the choice of NOT acting like an ungrateful twat towards her brother, she literally killed his soul without any reason.

She did that so that he wouldn't try to escape prison again to try to save her and end up getting himself killed. The orphanage owner was so close to cutting him up with those scissors. She was just trying to save him.

The officers were so close to believing his words about abuse, it was obvious they WOULD have investigated if the bitch didn't interfere. A moronic decision like that cannot be justified by a 'she did it for him' excuse.

Given the time period and various shit people have gotten away with just watching the anime. I highly doubt that they'd spend time to investigate what he said...especially since he's an orphan who has a criminal background. I mean didn't they send him to jail for defending himself from someone who was trying to violate him. What makes you so sure that they'd investigate it. Plus the lady hit him over the head with a cup to the point where he was bleeding and she still wasn't charged with anything. Like ..I'm having a hard time seeing how telling the officers what had happened would be any different. People who are the victim do often get punished even if they were defending themselves, and the perpetrators get to walk free. It's happened tons of times to me. It was just a tough and unforgiving time period and Meg accepted her fate and averted her brother from anymore hurt.

I see where your coming from, but...

What makes you so sure that they'd investigate it.
The woman's reaction makes me say that, she was attacking him because she wanted to stop him from saying any more about the sexually abuse taking place in the orphanage, it was clear as day that she got worried the officers would discover what she was doing and face repercussions.

Plus the lady hit him over the head with a cup to the point where he was bleeding and she still wasn't charged with anything.
That was the police's inability to be anything but useful, and you should ask the author that question.

Like ..I'm having a hard time seeing how telling the officers what had happened would be any different.
I'm explaining it right now :P

People who are the victim do often get punished even if they were defending themselves, and the perpetrators get to walk free. It's happened tons of times to me. It was just a tough and unforgiving time period
I doubt that, domestic abuse, robbery, adultery and etc are not the same as pedophilia.

and Meg accepted her fate and averted her brother from anymore hurt.
One thing: Saving someone by stabbing them in the heart is not a good way to save someone. At least she'll enjoy some good sex now.

Every time I start an anime like this one I tell myself that I'm 'ready' for whatever is about to come, but it always hurts. I'm not emotionally attached, at least not yet, to these characters to really suffer, but this was sickening, and really hard to watch.

I thought that Bro was the mature one, he should've known that there was no way that Joe would make it out there, but maybe he just wanted to let him see his sister again, to help him. Just like Turtle, and the others. Turtle really walked far away from his home to survive that though, orphaned by war after having to suffer with an abusive, and alcoholic father... I know there is no way to compare suffering, and that this isn't even fair, but I was still more hurt with Joe and Meg's past. Abandoned by their mother in an 'orphanage', abused like that by that repulsive 'woman'... Enduring it all to be with his sister... And now she was sold to a man that is just as repulsive as if she were an object. The sad part is that she is resigned to be used in order to survive, and she is so young too, just like Joe was, to have to go through this... And she was really harsh with him too, but she was also suffering, I see it as the way she found to make him "forget" about her, and care more about himself, because as long as they are both alive, they can meet again. This is truly depressing, and the word doesn't even cover it.

This is gonna be 26 episodes of highlighting human sin.

This show's got a dark vibe I'm really digging, but not everything is gelling with me. A subtle touch of twistedness in character design I can appreciate, but I hate that egregiously over-the-top "I'm a sinister fuck" meme where characters are drawn to look as despicable as possible. Let me find out how sinister they are when they do some sinister shit, will you?

Some crazy good shit at any rate. I lost all my composure during that flashback scene when hentai baba was riding Joe.

Hard stuff, but as long as they keep grinding doing what's necessary to survive, there's still the chance for a tomorrow where both siblings can be together again.

Seeing comments about this particular episode baffles me. How couldn’t you guys see how selfish Meg was? She just completely destroyed Joe’s mentality for what? She later said that she was happy that he came. Goodbye big brother. Ok??? For what? So that she could be a dick about their mom not coming back? He gonna get beaten to death!! or so I think because that’s what they said before. If she really doesn’t care about the well being for Joe, then why stop lady from killing him? Then she would’ve gotten blood on her hands. She’s gonna get raped and she’s gonna accept it. Think of what Joe was thinking at the time. That poor guy. Your sister wanted to get raped by a pedophile, the lady that raped you gets away even though the cops heard you offered sex, your sister hates you for mom not showing up, and your going back to prison where they’re gonna beat you to death. What a fucking bitch Meg is.

Part of me was expecting Meg to jump out her window and commit suicide during that crying scene.

Some things seem over the top, others are sickeningly realistic to real life. I'm sure even if Meg hadn't butted in those cops wouldn't have done jackshit, they would have been bribed or turned a blind eye. Morality is dead during such cruel times. This episode reminded me of the movie Pixote.

Oh gosh. My little sister joined in watching exactly at the part where the Director of the orphanage was violating Joe. I hope this does not scar her for life.
“Why does an apple fall when it is ripe? Is it brought down by the force of gravity? Is it because its stalk withers? Because it is dried by the sun, because it grows too heavy, or because the boy standing under the tree wants to eat it? None of these is the cause.... Every action of theirs, that seems to them an act of their own free will is in the historical sense not free at all but is bound up with the whole course of history and preordained from all eternity.”

oh man. it hit me hard when the 'dear night rainbow' soundtrack started playing as he was ushered out of the orphanage in the rain. i didn't expect this anime to actually have an ost of jou's makeshift lullaby as a full length song... this episode was super heavy, would have liked it to not be condensed within one episode and ending it off with jou inevitably getting that beat down but nonetheless it got the feels going. i don't see a happy ending for his sister at all. only relative is getting squashed in a juvenile facility, she probably has had little to no chances for a proper education if that ogre viking is the orphanage director, hafu, no inheritance, "adopted" (purchased) legitimately as a foster father's daughter, she's accepted it herself... i mean shit. gg

least i got this nice soundtrack out of that hell hole

Loved the teamwork to let Jou escape the prison, but it didn't end well. Man, the little flashback we got between him and the director was disgusting. And the fact that it'll also happen to his sister just breaks your heart. These two need to reunite again.
