So in short, the answer is... we don't really know. The episode is confusing an there are tons of different interpretations out there. The fact that there are 2 Ais makes it even more confusing. Plus, it may be possible that this episode breaks the "rules" set forth in previous episodes. Like you said, if this is strictly the trauma of Ai2 then it means Sawaki was related to her suicide in some way. Yet, Ai2 mentions the bullying as the reason why she committed suicide - not Sawaki.

However, we have reason to believe that there are a lot of things that happened in Ai2's world that didn't happen in Ai1's. For example, Sawaki says Ai confessed her love to him. We never saw this happen on screen. Was he talking about Ai1 or Ai2? Logic would dictate he's talking about Ai2 because Ai1 never confessed her love to him on screen (though, maybe she did off-screen or at the art gallery?). It's easier to assume he was talking about Ai2. I'm guessing for Ai2 she leaned on Sawaki more because she didn't have Koito in her life. Perhaps this led her to developing feelings for Sawaki quickly and then confessed her love to him. He turned her down and she committed suicide due to that. That's my best educated guess because other interpretations have to assume the rules of the show were broken specifically for this episode, and I think that's a bit of a leap in logic (albeit very possible).

I do think we can safely assume that both Ai1 and Ai2 at some point thought Sawaki was creepy. They probably both fell in love with him at some point albeit at different times (for Ai2 it was before her suicide, and for Ai1 it was after the prayer-bead episode).

One other point... Sawaki could be related to the trauma in a different way. Remember, there were characters such as in episode 2 who had no ill-will towards their "trauma." Those girls (and every girl Rika has saved) had positive feelings towards their "trauma." It would seem that the trauma is just a person related to their death in some way, shape or form or a source of fear in their lives. The other weird one is from episode 9 where Kotobuki's trauma had literally nothing to do with her death; it was just a guy she disliked. If we follow this line of logic, Sawaki didn't have to be directly involved in Ai's death. He could just be a person she was wary of. Alternatively, she could have disliked him because he didn't step in to stop the bullying. There are a number of possibilities. Ai2 herself seemed surprised that Sawaki appeared, so it wasn't immediately obvious to her either.

I'd pick up the novel with the fourth volume, as there was more content skipped in the fourth and fifth volumes than in the first three in my opinion. You could skim or read from there according to your preference. I picked up the novels after having watched the anime and still found them to be very enjoyable, but I've always loved books, so take my advice with that grain of salt.

I'm also hoping that a third season gets announced! The end card for the final episode definitely suggested that is a possibility; considering the fact that they stopped halfway through the second book (it's broken into four installments if I recall correctly) I think that a third season makes more sense than an OVA continuation.

The first season of the anime adapts the first three light novels (so Parts 1-3 of book 1.) The second season adapts the next two light novels (Parts 1 and 2 of book 2.) As far as the quality of the adaptation goes, I think they did a really good job. There are details here and there missing from the anime, but the main plot and the character development are all preserved.

I'm reading them as they come out in paperback in English, so I've read up through the fifth novel. Since I don't like digital reading and can't read Japanese, that's as far as I'll be until the next book is released (in November I think.)

I would say we may have like 10 more chapters, so it may end by February or March. This is just my guess but the author in December 2019 said his new year resolution is to try finish AOT in 2020, but I don't think it is ending 2020 especially because of the delay in chapter because of covid-19.

So my best bet is early 2021 or the latest mid 2021.
