Details of title character’s past remains a mystery for over 91 chapters now. By dismantling their precious object, the memory about the object gets conveyed. The manga starts with: "if you know the story behind all 7 mysteries, they say you get to do a wish". It’s a goal to learn about all the mysteries. Seems like a mystery to me. Since the beginning, there has been immense romantic tension between two of the three main characters. One of the two being one of the 7 mysteries referenced above. Last January there was a confession, and they kissed. In fact, for this pairing alone, there have been 2 cheek kisses, a kiss on the forehead, 2 confessions, a fake confession and now a kiss on the mouth. These characters discuss their blooming affection for each other with other characters. Falling in love, and pining in general are very prominent topics within this manga. The current MAL synopsis clearly references the main female character in search of romance. The romance is intrinsicly interwoven within the plot. Without the romance, the current story and stakes wouldn’t be possible. Volume 8 will show you the vibes…  So, the male lead is a ghost, who murdered his brother and haunts the school bathroom to attone for his sin. The female lead is revealed to die within a year. More dead characters with sad backstories. Unlocking dramatic backstories is a goal. Lots of angst surrounding the upcoming inevitable death of a teenage girl, and her tragic romance with a dead murderer. The whole manga has a very melancholic undertone, and the notion of “if only things were different” is very present. Drama seems very fitting. The absence of a central plot to carry the story towards a charted destination means Slice of Life stories frequently lack overarching conflict and resolution. While life is not without conflict and Slice of Life neither, here conflict appears and dissipates seemingly at will, without a specific narrative to enforce it." By this definition, especially the parts that are bold is literally "the opposite" of what Ashita no Joe does. Ashita no Joe is very focused on boxing matches and trainings for the most part just like other shounen sports manga which at least none of the popular ones have the SoL genre but if the argue is that the first volumes aren't really about boxing (which is not true because still there's training and stuff and some non-official matches) still those volumes aren't really SoL because it's not random nor mundane at all and still has a central plot going on. |

The story follows two narratives - the group of kids raised in an experimental facility and two protagonists who wander post-apocalyptic world. During the lives and travels of those characters they discover new clues and hints, as well as new questions, about the world and environment they inhabit. Survival - Two main characters are blindly wandering the post-apocalyptic Japan in order to find "Heaven" they were tasked to reach. During their adventure they are constantly forced to scavenge for food, water and other resources, find shelters, confront various beings and people, etc. Drama - First paragraph in MAL's description of Drama tag perfectly describes this story: "Plot-driven stories focused on realistic characters experiencing human struggle. Because drama stories ask the question of what it means to be human, the conflict and emotions will be relatable, even if the settings or characters themselves are not. Here, you will see humanity at its worst, its best, and everything in between." With concepts such as genetic engineering, cloning and other futuristic medical procedures being very present in this manga, both the characters are forced to wander what it means to be human and struggle with their identities and emotions. Also during their adventure in post-apocalyptic world, characters encounter and have experience with various people and communities that represent both the best and (usually) the worst of humanity. Award Winning (?) - The manga got first place on 'Kono Manga ga Sugoi!' Male's Reader category in 2019. Though I am not sure if this particular award makes it eligible for this tag. It was also one of Jury Recommended Works at the 24th and 25th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2021 and 2022. |
