The first episode was so good.

I was excited listening to Leif's story. When he spoke about his ship being trapped in an ice float and crushed - it instantly reminded me of Shackleton's adventure.

WOW what an opener. Visuals are superb, voice acting is great, and there's some real heart behind the story and characters. Can already tell I'm going to love this. Great start.

First of all, I'd like to thank this anime for reminding me of this particular part of my childhood that I enjoyed despite not knowing nor bothering to know what it was about and finally showing me the context behind it~

I'll go ahead and say that an anime about Vikings is something I've never seen before and its historical setting based on real world events makes it a lot more interesting for me! I'm really excited to see the sheer brutality of these warriors later in the story.

Thors is a good man, giving away that many sheep just to let that slave experience his last moments in peace. He could've just let Halfden take him back since he'd most likely die before he'll be able to torture him but that'd go against his noble nature.

I wonder how many people here read the manga first? I actually struggled with this episode, and don't know if I want to continue with it. Not because it's bad, in fact I totally see why people like it. It's just that the manga is so much better, and the illustrations are so incredible than anime adaptation was always going to pale in comparison to the source material. It's why people generally believed that Vinland Saga would never be adapted.

The way everyone and their grandma were going on about this show; I'd thought it would have been amazing.
I've just watched the first ep....people are killed like they are made of jello, the 'warriors' are doing demi-god level feats, there's a guy that puts his family through more hardship to save a random dying slave but also slaughters a shiton of people like they are animals.
Also the vikings knew CPR....WTF....

If the next 2 or 3 eps are just as mediocre as this one, I'll have to take a pass.

This has one of the slowest starts in anime but, it also has one of the greatest season 1 endings. It’s not perfect but it’s Perfect to me. But, that’s just my opinion. Which you never asked for lol 😂. Guess I’ll say that episodes 1-3 are meant to be watched in one sitting. If you don’t like it by episode 4 or 5, give it a drop. A lot of people felt the same way you did when the show came out.

The characters preform demi God feats because the series is based on the Icelandic sagas in which the Vikings preform the same type of feats. He slaughter a shitton of people 15 years before the rest of the episode in which is mindset had completely changed after that battle they go into that more in later episodes your criticism of the CPR is completely right though, the series isn't flawless of course.

I'm at ep4 now and I'm a bit more invested in the story...lets just say; one of the things that I found the most annoying is finally/inevitably gone, now I'm just hoping that the MC isn't going to be a loud, obnoxious shounen cliche.
I see the value of the show and intend to continue but I'm not convinced it is a "8.75".

Those were just the most obvious stuff that pulled me out of the show; it was like I was watching an over the top game cut scene or something.
There's loads of stuff that is 'off'; the way they fought, the weapons they used, IIRC Iceland had a '(democratic?) government' around that time and even that the vikings mainly used silver as currency, not gold.
I came into the show blind; all I knew about it was that the anime community (including reviewers that I trusted) were hyped AF; over it -so I had expectations....I'm not angry; just disappointed with it (thus far).

Well, just to prepare you. Thorfinn is meant to be a Shounen cliche. It’s an anime where you’re supposed to look at the MC in an annoying, childish And hot headed way. You’re not supposed to like Thorfinn at all. Someone else carry’s this Arc of the story on their shoulders, the title of last episode should tell you why. Hopefully you get that far. I feel like there will be more things you won’t like but, I hope you enjoy your time with the show. However long that may be

I finished the show.
I don't hate Thorfinn -he just comes off as a broken, 'not the sharpest knife' kid, and I don't think of him as a typical shounen MC cliche because all of his yelling, edgy-ness and arrogance doesn't actually 'work', it actually works against him.
Can't really say much more here without spoiling for others.

This episode was so damn good. I was was watching The Last Kingdom and even though I was on the first season of that, I thought, “hey they have an anime for everything, don’t they, so what about Vikings?” Vinland Saga is IT. This is Wit’s second work that I’m watching and I love it. The first being Attack on Titan, of course- which is also incredible. Awesome OP, awesome piano pieces mixed in this episode, as well as a great animation/art style. I’m pretty sure they used CGI for some of the actual ship battles, but I don’t mind. Looking forward to what this series has to offer, and I know I have to read the manga now, this is just spectacular.

Solid episode. Good. Didn't think it was anything special though (first episode is to early to tell anyways). 7/10

Questions I have that I'm looking forward to getting answered (don't reply to me with soilers):

• What was the relevance of that battle in the beginning of the episode? Everybody died but him?
• And I'm assuming it ties into with why
• Thorfinn is going to take his people/village to Vinland (when he's older, of course)?
• I'm assuming Vinland is real and not some metaphor?

They really wanted you to see that Trump and the weapons inside.

I don't get the point of buying that dead slave. Not that I'm in favor of slavery, but Idk if I would've bought his dignity-in-death like that.

Still can't believe this great manga got an adaptation, the first episode looks really great and promising for what is going to come. Tlva is pretty hilarious, mourning on the ex-slave's death because of the eight sheep he costed.

damn that was SO COOL!!!
the animation and voice acting were top-notch, i have never been into historical series (or history in general lol) but this one seems to have a very epic tone that i like so it was cool to see all of the vinland story (call ignorant if you wanna XD)
i can sense, at the very least, a cool adventure series with an intriguing revenge plot...yes, i have been spoiled and i don´t cared lol

Damn that intro was very gory right from the start the action begins, That OP is just too perfect in this series it fits perfectly well

Vikings fighting for survival and Slaves being used up till death that's a pretty harsh world to accept it's killed or be killed indeed survival of the fittest some say

Thorfinn has a long path to take he's still a small kid I hope he grows up to be fit for this harsh cruel world that he's going to endure, The ED is pretty eerie but I like the way how it sounds just like the OP it fits here.

OP is fucking intense as it should be, the cinematography of its visuals are quite impressive while the song itself is awesome! The ED is slower-paced, sung by the wonderful Aimer.

Well then, Vinland saga, since this is adapted by Wit Studio you can already tell that there aren't many inconsistencies in the animation and art style if any at all. Furthermore, with this series' apparent symbiosis with war and action, even from the very first second, this is the right studio to animate this series. A show about Vinland AKA Finland. To record, there weren't many anime shows that took place in the middle ages, in particular; not in the Scandanavian region, so this is a fresh theme. I'm eager to find out more.

That was the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever in Iceland. Imagine giving up many of your livestock only for the slave that you've purchased to die right there and then.

Phenomenal adaption by Wit Studio. Very faithful adaption to the manga, high exceptions going forward for the series.

Can't believe people are complaining about the CGI, it was very limited at select scenes but it was not bad at all. If anything I was impressed with the CGI. We've all seen worst....

Some people think that CGI is always inherently bad no matter what because that is what they have been told, but obviously that’s a dumb position and Wit Studio did a great job with the animation, CGI, story, voices, sounds, songs and everything.

Epic episode. Halfdan is such a promising character. I wish he appears again.

Holy the CGI is incredible to look at from the beginning of the ship fights and every properties, felt really satisfying uwu. Thorfinn taking care of the cow is pretty hilarious but guess that's what people do when farming milk for instance. Oh yeah Leif interactin with the kids is cute and funny at the same time :D. Eyo Tohrfinn looking like a hero but eventually got squashed by the monster man this kid is funny xD Gosh what's even more funny was when Ylva fell in the pile of snow and I think I was laughing while at the same time when Ylva was digging the snow and got a jumpscare when there was a guy laying unconscious, not gonna lie for someone to get tortured just wanting to have more freedom ;c. Halfdan looks like a scary antagonist who just beats the shit out of people till bloodbath with a chain, but still that scene looks hella sick.

Op and ED = banger, Aimer and Survive Said The Prophet are amazing singers and I always enjoy every song singed by them <3

very nice scenery and crisp animation. i didn't know it wasn't the first episode at the time, but i watched a completely random episode from amazon prime about 2? 3? years ago, how long ago was this aired. don't know. but i finally got around to it because i listened to the opening and found out that it was the opening for vinland saga. it's the type of song which makes you want to play it on your guitar and scream out the lyrics, banger. can't skip it. regretted eating while watching the scene where the hafdan/halfdan guy used the chains to strip and rip that dude's head off. needless to say, wasn't feeling hungry anymore. and it was foolish to pay 8 ewes for a man who would just end up dying almost immediately afterwards. he's virtuous, but foolish.

Great visuals. So far can't say much about the story, as we don't know the significance of these events yet, but seems intriguing as a beginning.

I'm a bit bothered by the fact that nobody's wearing gloves or winter hats. Even the boy just breathed into his hands to make them warmer. While Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream, it's windy and snowy. If not beanies with pompoms and cute pictures of sheep, at least I'd expect them to wear some kind of fur hats.

Good for the first episode.

Really liked the battle in the beginning but was it just me or did the arrow that Thor took just disappear in the next scene. Either way, reminds me of AC Valhalla, a game which I love so I’m happy with the era this is taking place in.

I like the Thor dude and how nice he was to buy the slave even though he knew that the slave was dying but in the end, the guy didn’t die a slave but died a free man.

Feels like this anime is gonna be pretty intense. I just hope they don’t show rape and I’ll be good.

That's what I'm bothered. The pilot should set up things ready for character development in episode 2 but the episode's script doesn't explain a thing what they should do or what is the problem they must solve. What's their dream, the goal or whatever. Just ended like the episode was cut in half... I've never seen an pilot like that. I'm not saying the anime is bad as I only watched this ep, but this ep is meh. 4 stars tops, I'm not hyped but I'll keep watching. It's too soon to drop it.

I listened to the OP since it came out, but somehow never bothered to actually watch the anime. But now I'm finally here and the first episode, especially at the very beginning was a banger with really great visuals and animation, like you can expect if it comes from Wit. Certainly it isn't 100% clear if the story is about them getting back to Vinland or if it's somethings else, but we could already see that there are conflicts. Hopefully episode 2 can clear up things in that regard and I'm definitely interested to see what Vinland Saga has to offer.

I had an anime recommendations tool choose my next show to watch and this was at the top. So I am going to give it a watch. I have no idea what this show is about other than it might be about Scandinavia?

This show seems to be about Leif Eriksen. IDK if the vikings were really friends with the natives. I'd have to do some research to fact check that.

NVM I think the protagonist might actually be Thorfinn.

Is Vinland supposed to be Finland?

So far so good. This show is interesting. The OP is good.

Halfdan is an asshole.
