Despite of not being your language, do you find Japanese puns in anime funny?

What do you think of Japanese puns that are used often in anime? Sometimes the fansubs include notes to explain them. Do you find them funny? I mean, we all can relate to puns in our own language more than anything else...

japanese word puns usually escape me, AND the translator both.
this is why I wasn't able to enjoy Seitokai Yakuindomo for example.
I don't find slapstick comedy funny btw.

I like words so I find them funny even after someone explains them to me.

I do find some of them funny, and to me the most are easy to notice. Puns that are not that complex, that is. Like the Gintama ones, which are more stupid than funny. Or a better example Pop Team Epiic ones, like the "kininaru" which I appreciated for how silly it was.

Most japanese puns rely way too much on exchanging kanjis, so I rarely find them funny. I don't get traditional Japanese humour as a whole. I watched a few episodes of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and I had absolutely no idea what was funny about the Rakugo sequences.

I'm the type of guy who doesn't mind having to look up explanations of jokes that evade me due to the language barrier, and don't mind having the joke only land once I look it up. Even if the joke doesn't land proper during the show, I'll typically still let out a chuckle after googling it.

I don't find them funny but I can't help but crack a smile and admire myself when I understand them without subtitles.

Not all and only the ones I'm able to get right off the bat, if I have to get a joke explained or look it up, it ain't funny anymore.

I do find them funny. It's understandable if it's not funny in English though since most of the time they come with some rather long translator's note explaining them. Then again I'm that weirdo who finds Conrad's puns funny even though his puns are supposed to be cold jokes :'D

If the SUB'ers are doing a good job, the puns will be present without explanation, and won't require any understanding of Japanese language.

I like playful, language-based humor in general although I guess that most of the times when I need an explanation it's not gonna make me laugh out loud, but I still can appreciate the idea behind it so I almost always see it as a plus.
I probably regret this post by now.

Those stuff don't really translate well into English honestly. The humor would lose a lot of its impact when the translator has to put up explanations on the references, puns or jokes. It's begging to be consumed in its native language. Not really the anime's fault but more like the language barrier.

too bad nobody in the 4th wall decides to tell me lol. It's kinda how books would have glossary but not many anime or translators put it out there.

If you read manga, do you see it somewhere like comment section or it would be explained as well?

On a different note, it's how I keep on liking songs with catchy lyrics that I cannot translate well because once I know the lyrics I just had to move on (likely).

90% of the times in subtitled anime they're not funny, most of the times i got funny puns from anime was when i watched it dubbed and saw how the translators translated the pun to English or even made a brand new one.

One of my all time favourite puns in anime was the one I heard in death note when it watched it dubbed: "I cant imagine a world without you, light" "yeah it would be pretty dark"

Even if there is a pun in English in the subtitles that I can understand it never hits as well through text. Maybe that's why my favourite comedy animes are visual ones like nichijou

Actually that's the other announcer, Hanano Saki

Regardless, they're both pretty punny.

Sometimes they can be funny. One instance I remember in particular is A Silent Voice where the deaf girl tried to say "Suki" (I like you) and instead said "Tsuki" (moon). The most ironic thing was that the moon was visible and the guy was determined she meant moon.

If I cannot remember a single funny pun, it cannot be a good sign... And I learn Japanese since years.

They are one of the strongest points of gintama and I find them funny most of the time unless I don't the get meaning.
