THE LIST BELOW IS ACCORDING TO MAL RATINGS

So I did this at the mid of this year too as MAL stopped it (after 2016)

Before I start there are some rules to follow with this list:

1.List without any sequels in it

2.No OVAs or Movies

3.There are none but anyway no spinoffs

4.Only the shows which are completed are in here

I had a lot of fun making this so I hope you like it as well.

And thanks to all the reviewers for helping me out.

WARNING: No. 1 will be controversial and I know it's kind of unfair

10. High score girl

Recommended by: @Shirokuza

"A unique love story that takes the theme where the game is on the rise, to be honest this series makes the viewers will be invited back to the past where you experienced childhood. The conflicts they face are simple but viewers are also invited to think about what the right solution is when like this. This series is very interesting and worth watching for romantic genre enthusiasts. I highly recommend it."

9. Asobi Asobase

Recommended by: @papsoshea

"Asobi Asobase is a balls-to-the-wall comedy that’s completely Beavis and Butt-Head levels of surrealism and vulgarity, like if Nichijou was on steroids. Not only does it grab the book of how to write “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” and rips out the pages, but proceeds to use those same pages as toilet paper in the most shockingly hilarious way!"

8. Yuru camp

Recommended by: @Pipe

"Yuru Camp is a lovely slice of life that can be considered the best iyashikei anime. No matter how you feel, after each episode, you will end up with a big smile on your face. Yuru Camp is not about pretty girls doing cute things. It's about how to enjoy simpler situations and how to maintain the right mood and be happy in any circumstance. More importantly, the series irradiates that feeling to all viewers."

7. Banana fish

Recommended by: @Ryuseishun

"Unique Westernized setting with urban action, sorta romance between guys, but not to point of yaoi. Full of thrilling action, mature moments, has harsh themes with gunfights and drugs all attached beautifully with an amazing plot that runs high on emotional moments."

6. Hinamatsuri

Recommended by: @papsoshea

"A strange premise, relatable feelings and experiences, mixed together with absurdity makes up the one weird anime that you should be watching. In an almost satirical way, Hinamatsuri conveys the message that the best people can be found in the strangest places. Beneath the humour lies a rich layer of social commentary and life lessons. It perfectly balances the thought-provoking themes and gut-busting moments through a combination of situational comedy, visual gags, emotional punches and plenty of misunderstandings."

5. Grand Blue

Recommended by: @saiyan_junio

"Disguised as a summer anime full of fun and the sport of diving, Grand Blue easily becomes the comedy of the year with outrageous adult scenarios, the "sport of drinking" and the most hilarious cast in a comedy since prison school or (most recently) Konosuba! The story isn't the main point, neither is character development, however as a comedy, Grand Blue has the viewer bursting out laughing every single episode without fail with a new style of Japanese humour reminiscent of classic American college banter! Bursts of laughter, crazy scenarios, an insanely fun group of characters and a great, catchy opening song make this anime one of the best this year! What more could you ask for?"

4.Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

Recommended by: @Ryuseishun

"Ore seishun meets Monogatari. Simple but brilliant execution of interpersonal dialogue with short arcs (3 episodes each) but good characterization of the cast with our main guy that helps out other girls with their problems, but keeps faithful to his own girlfriend. Full supernatural phenomenon occurring with many challenges and hardships faced by all the characters."

3. Violet Evergarden

Recommended by: @KANLen09

"With respect to KyoAni, it's visually stunning and beautiful. The only elephant is the melodrama in which MC Violet goes through a lot of confounding feelings and emotions to discover herself not just as a meta-weaponized android, but as one with a human heart discovering the meaning of love. Regardless, this is a controversial anime in terms of story, but everything else just overshadows the story a lot, to the point that you can watch just for the visuals."

2. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

Recommended by: @saiyan_junio

"A madhouse original fuelled with charm, a fantastic sense of adventure and youthful exuberance! The anime itself is straight forward and to the point as we follow our 4 main high school heroines on their own personal journey to the Overall, icy land of Antarctica in which each one of the girls has their own motives and reasons behind their curiosity. In addition to a colourful and impressive main cast as well as an intriguing and simplistic plot; the music and animation are some of the most beautiful this year and aid in providing the best adventurous atmosphere throughout this series. Overall, it succeeds in providing a sense of adolescent discovery and captivates the audience with heart warming moments paired with fantastic visuals."

1. Mo Dao Zu Shi

Recommended by: @ballroomdancer

"Want to draw a bit of attention to this show since I think it flew under a lot of radars, or people saw the BL tags and figured it wouldn't be interesting. It's great, sweeping charismatic cast with a lot of action and fantastic art/animation. In general the whole series looks incredible and the characters have been a lot of fun.(Plus they do animated commercials every week where the characters pitch food products which is hilarious.)"

I HOPE YOU LIKED THIS LIST

So, what do you think about this list??

What are your favorites??

Again thanks to every reviewer who contributed.

Anyway, thanks for passing by :D

- Asobi Asobase is lower than Grand Blue?
- Bunny Girl is too high.
- I dropped Violet Evergarden but since it looks like a highly acclaimed anime so, so be it.
- I don't even know the 1st placed one lol

Just to clarify here that Sora Yori and Bunny Girl, and Banana Fish and Yuru Camp are technically tied. They have the same average rating, and I think in these cases MAL's ranking is determined by the alphabetical order.

Cool stuff! I already had plans to watch Asobi and already watching HSG so this one is kind of encouraging! I find it interesting how you keep an ONA but exclude OVAs/ Movies. Would have been nice had you explained the reason. Anyways, I guess it's alright.

Using your same set of rules, here is the list of Japan's Best Anime of 2018:

*1 位 宇宙よりも遠い場所 [Yorimoi]
*2 位 ゆるキャン△ [Camp △]
*3 位 ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン [Violet Evergarden]
*4 位 ハイスコアガール [High Score Girl]
*5 位 ヒナまつり [Hinamatsuri]
*6 位 からかい上手の高木さん [Takagi - the Master Of Tease]
*7 位 はたらく細胞 [Cells at Work! ]
*8 位 あそびあそばせ [Workshop Of Fun]
*9 位 ゾンビランドサガ [Zombie Land Saga]
10 位 恋は雨上がりのように [After the Rain]

Comparison between the two Top 10s:

- Grand Blue is ranked 17
- Rascal is ranked 23
- Banana is ranked 26
- Mo Dao Zu Shi is unranked (either because it is an ONA and not TV, or most likely because it was never released in Japan. Either way, dunno.)

Source: anikore.

Fun fact: The Top 3 in Japan aired in the same season.

Probably will be more movement in the scores for Bunny Girl and Banana Fish as more people complete them and put in their scores. Thought Bunny Girl was at 8.77 just last week, and Banana Fish < 8? Two shows going in different directions with their rankings.

At least Sora Yori and Yuru Camp have been fairly steady in their scores since the middle of the year.

My pick would have been Lupin III: Part V.
Beside the fact that it's nowhere near popular enough in the west to even be mentioned, it is "technically" a sequel despite being completely independent of prior parts.

My opinion on the top 10

my opinion "in more detail" on the anime from winter - summer

10 High Score Girl - I think it deserves the spot.

9. Asobi Asobase - I'm not a fan of it, I did give the third episode another "chance" later, and as expected, I couldn't stand it aside of one or two faces.

8. Yuru Camp - I like it and wish it would have been, at least, in the top 5.

7. Banana Fish - Can't say anything to it since I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my agenda, and I overall have seen only positive receptions, so I'm hopeful.

6. Hinamatsuri - It's the best comedy of 2018 for me, much more isn't to say.

5. Grand Blue - Same as Asobi Asobase did I gave it a second chance, and similar only to an even worse extent did I "hate" it.

4. Violet Evergarden - I think it's a pleasant show, which thanks to the amount of technicality alone deserves to be recognized, even if I would have liked certain elements to be a bit more fleshed out.

3. Bunny Girl - I don't have too much to say about Bunny Girl since I think it's a fairly average show neither much positive nor negative.
Not, that there aren't any issues I have, especially with the visual presentation, and the overall character dynamic, but those are more complaints, holding the anime back for me, instead of making it "worse."

2. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho - Great show, and a well-deserved silver medal in my eyes.

1. Mo Dao Zu Shi - Can't complain about this one because I failed to watch it in the last two weeks. I seriously wanted to, but I was too lazily about watching anime as of lately.

my top 10
(series only)

10. Planet With
9. Harukana Receive
8. Hisone to Maso-tan
7. Zombieland Saga
6. Akanesasu Shoujo
5. Hinamatsuri
4. Yuru Camp△
3. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
2. Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight
1. Yagate Kimi ni Naru

my top 10
(including movie, OVA, sequels...)

10. Akanesasu Shoujo
9. Hinamatsuri
8. Yama no Susume: Third Season (haven't finished it, so it might change places with Yuru Camp△, depending on the rest)
7. Yuru Camp△
6. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
5. Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight
4. Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou
3. Yagate Kimi ni Naru

Haven't watched 1 and 10

Bunny Girl and Asobi were meh to me

I like the rest

As for my personal top 10

1. Hataraku Saibou
2. Hinamatsuri (very close such that it is switchable with first)
3. Golden Kamuy
4. Place Further than the Universe
5. Banana Fish
6. Grand Blue
7. Megalo Box
8. Violet Evergarden
9. Yuru Camp
10. (don't really have a definitive one yet as it's basically composed of multiple anime that I liked at one point then got disappointed or repetitive)

If we could count ones that haven't finished...then the Slime one is projected to be in my top 10.

(Haven't tried Baki, Revue Starlight, Planet With as well)

If you are asking for recommendation then according to your taste I think you will enjoy SoraYori

Happy new year!

If we could count ones that haven't finished...then the Slime one is projected to be in my top 10.

I wish I could've included Slime cause I really like the show myself.

Happy new year!

I respect chinese culture and everything but Mo Dao Zu Shi must go and be at the top of list with only chinese titles.

Good list, tho I have no idea what that #1 is.
My personal list would be

10. Boarding School Juliet
9. Steins;Gate 0
8. Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san (weird choice, I know)
7. Hinamatsuri
6. Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc
5. Yuru Camp
4. Cell's at Work
3. The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of the Commandments
2. Grand Blue
1. Bunny Girl Senpai

Don't know about Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san but great list otherwise!

Happy new year!

It's 3-gatsu no Lion 2nd Season because it finished airing in 2018, people need to realize that the started airing date doesn't matter for aoty rankings because one shouldn't judge an anime before it's finished.
Edit: ok my bad, overlooked the no sequels part.

I actually conducted a poll just for this and people voted 'yes' to include ONAs

I mean, in this case it's a double offender because apart from starting in 2017, the OP is not counting sequels.
