The orphan girl's not Rin's daughter. She is seen with her mother who looks nothing like Rin living in a normal Japanese style house in the previous scene, when we know Rin lives in a Western building brothel house.

All in all, I like this movie a lot. It's light-hearted, funny and tragic. It explores the tragedies of war and death of dreams without being melodramatic. Out of the big three anime movies of 2016, I'd say In this Corner is the best, then Your Name and Koe no Katachi.

There are few questions I have after watching the movies though.

1. Suzu-Rin connection: for someone who she has only met once as an adult, Suzu is awfully concerned for her, even if they met each other as kids.

2. The focus on certain objects: the lip balm which we see three times: when Suzu put on make up when her husband went to training, when she ran away from her in-laws' house and almost got shot by the planes, the lip balm shattered, and at the end credits Rin's story is told by using the lip balm as paint;
Suzu husband's notebook has a strange cut-out (when she had to go give the notebook to him) and is centered frame. These are the few objects which was given focus that I can recall but can't decipher the meanings.

Only after I read the manga did I understand those parts. The anime didn't include a few parts of the manga, such as Suzu-Rin relation (they met two more times than the anime as adults), Rin-Suzu's husband love for each other (they wanted to marry but met with protest), the few objects like the lip balm (was given to Suzu by a courtesan working at Rin's place who died shortly after meeting Suzu) and the notebook cut-out (Suzu's husband wrote down Rin's name and address in the cut-out in case Rin got lost because she cant write and read)... A lot of this was hinted in the anime but never given context or explained, so a minus.

I definitely looking forward to the extended version as this anime is a solid 9/10 for me. Anyone wants to know more about the story should check out Seven Seas' translation http://www.sevenseasentertainment.com/books/in-this-corner-of-the-world/

It's very simple, plot, art and animation but it's lighthearted that it gives you the drama in small doses with funny moments in between and halfway past, it delivers the tragedies in tidbits so you wont get sucked down the abyss of depression. It was also a good thing that it ended in somewhat happy ending since I'm a sucker for happy endings.

After everything that happened:

I need to stop watching ww2 anime movies, my kokoro can't take it ;_; But it was a good one... so sad, realistic in a way. Those bombs gave me some nasty falshbacks, but the worst is always when kids suffer.. I can't take that.
Good movie overall.

I really like this movie, but i find it boring for some reason. I think it should be 1h30m not over 2hrs long, but still it's solid story. 6/10.

Suzu is a cutie, but...Lord, is she cursed to look twelve for the rest of her life? Shuusaku probably never had a kid with her because he was afraid of breaking her.

Honestly wasn't expecting them to go and kill the little girl on me, but...Hiroshima was fucked up, and that's one way to show it. That and Suzu losing her arm, and her sister who was clearly getting ill from the radiation...

I absolutely thought Suzu was going to hook up with Mizuhara in that one scene, and honestly part of me wanted her to. Even though Shuusaku loves her, she really had no choice in the matter of getting married to him.

Very good movie. Didn't always hold my full attention, but 90% of the time ain't bad. Great animation. 8/10

That's a funny way to comment about her childish look XD I agree tho, I had trouble distinguishing her child and teenage self, and then her teenage and adult self .-.

Girl in Kure tilts her head with WWII Flashbacks the Movie. No but, that was a damn good movie, I felt all the feels, though it was a bit boring at times and I found myself getting a bit sleepy here and there. I'm glad I watched this, I didn't really know anything about the bombings or the effects of them at all aside from that fact that it happened. Not much else to say that hasn't been said already really though. 9/10.

I did not like it that much. More like a 6.5 but I rounded up and gave 7/10. This movie didn't get me emotionally involved. (Koe no Katachi was much better in that for example.)

The char design was ugly and I did not like the voices that much. That's usually okay if there are chars I like of if the story is interesting. But the chars were average (neither liked nor hated them) and there was no plot since it was slice of life.

In a movie it would have worked better with a different setup ... like generating tension and building up until a climax. The way this story was set up felt boring just like going through different stations in the main chars life. A series might have entertained me more - if there was more time to develop the chars and show other chars and stuff.

Yeah it is MAPPA and I like the studio. And the backgrounds were nice and the art if they changed between normal and the drawings. And I liked the music. (Should have used only music without talking and inner monologue a bit more so it would have been easier to enjoy the music.)

Also the violence at the end was disgusting a bit. Didn't fit with the other style they should not have shown that. (Kid near the other person dying with glass in the arm and body getting destroyed.) (They did not show stuff when the other kid of the sister died.)

I would have liked to see more after the Americans arrived (and faster progress in the beginnind) ... not ending it there. (That is more the time period I prefer.)

It was ok overall..

However with awful character design and lots of holes in the plot. It also has very boring first half, lots of characters till the end remain kinda undeveloped and the other half are "developing" with no obvious evidence for the viewer. Romantic side is one of the worst I've ever seen in such genre shows.

On the other hand, the art and animation are impressive, especially during the moments when reality is substituted with paintings from Suzu's point of view. Remember the scene when antiaircraft cannon shells are exploding in the sky and she sees them like a paint droplets on a panoramic picture? Very well made!

What else can I say.. The movie had a potential, sadly, wasted thanks to poorly implemented plot and characters. So, 6/10.

I am happy for the kid though, felt bad for Harumi, mixed feelings
I like to post in manga forum when I feel it is worth it, so people will think. "Shit, is her again" or something.

People asked me where I read certain thing but the rules say no telling where did you read so maybe I am too boring for not saying? Or salty because you didn't check my profile that says don't ask because I hate people to ghost me after that. I love learning languages so maybe I did not read the manga in English.

Well that was certainly brutal, crushing even. From the death of Harumi until the end pretty much I had tears flowing, and when that random little girl lost her mom so graphically just...God that was rough. I think I'm gonna file this one away under movies I only ever need to see once. Don't get me wrong it was fantastic. A visually stunning, haunting wartime drama. Honestly with the way Suzu moved and was depicted part of me felt like I actually was watching an oldtimey live action war picture, minus the occasional times it played with the drawing and color aspects. Pretty much the complete opposite end of the spectrum from the movie I just watched a few hours ago. Just....quite a film. This'll stick with me I can tell you that. 9/10.

Beautiful and touching!
I got mad at Suzu's childhood friend, after she was married he showed up and tried to kiss her.
I was so sad when Harumi died, I was not expecting it...and Suzu lost her drawing hand, when she said she wanted to go back to Hiroshima I got worried coz in 1 week the atomic bomb would happen, I am glad she didn't went there. It was so nice of them to adopt the orphan kid.

A film that makes you appreciate these modern times so odious, a profound narration that does not expire in the usual search for crying at all costs in the viewer and that really makes the viewing of truly terrifying moments, despite the dramatic moments there are and strike straight to the heart in their hardness. As for me I cried a lot to the death of little Harumi and beyond. The film despite it lasted almost two hours, flew in a moment and I hoped it would last longer as I wanted to know more of the events told. The soundtrack was catchy, the protagonist entered my heart and not only her. A film that I recommend to everyone.

Question, what happened to Suzu's baby? Didn't she get pregnant in the middle of the movie? Also I think the child they adopt was actually just a random one just to give Suzu a purpose in life, I think Rin died in the earlier air raids.

i don't think she was ever actually pregnant, i think they mistaked her symptoms because after they show the doctor's office she says something like "eating just for one after all"

Judging by this thread I missed pretty much everything involving Rin. So she's a poor girl from the attic who grows up to work at a brothel and gives Suzu directions. Got that.

But the kid at the end being hers? And Suzu's husband actually loving Rin? Where is that in the movie, is it insinuated, actually shown, what?

I've been meaning to get to this due to the praise of the film. I actually went into it pretty blind and barely knew that it was a WWII story at all. This basically gave me all the feelings Grave of the Fireflies gave me but even more padding to flesh out Suzu and where she came from. I've actually always thought the home front of war is a more interesting topic then what goes on in battle so this did give me the hardship and almost the literal ticking bomb of what I knew was coming once the countdown started.

There is quite a lot of pacing issues. And I did cry at quite a few scenes I feel like this could've hit harder if Suzu was more vocal about herself, I understood by the end that her innocence and naivety couldn't last through the war, her ditzy and day dream self was quite refreshing but I feel like the breakdown of it was somewhat abrupt instead of a gradual chipping away. Also as much as I wanted to cheer for the love story, it felt weak, again on Suzu side more or less and her feelings for her childhood friend were also wavered so weirdly.

There is also the nitpick of the character design and the Suzu's seiyuu which I agree with too, at the beginning I didn't know she was 19 until she said so, she looked like a child for most the movie.

But I will say her being the most upset due to the loss of the war was actually one of the best parts and one of my cry points. I felt her frustration and I wanted more of those eruptions.

Truly a great story and a hard pill to swallow.

Omg I definitely should read about movies before watching this. I just saw it on Netflix and if has a picture of the couple kissing so I assumed it was going to be some kind of cute romance. Was not ready for it to be a war film.
Honestly at the start I really liked it and I had no idea where it was going. When it got to the middle I was actually getting a little bored. I feel there was a lot of their daily lives put it that wasn't necessary. But then when it got closer to the end. Mannnn that was crazy and I tried like10 times XD
Also I am extremely Upset suzu lost her drawing arm. That broke my heart. That was like her favorite thing to do :(
Since I thought it was a romance I was really not ready for all the sadness. What a beautiful film. I give it a 8/10

honestly, the pacing of the plot is not really impressive and its definitely not one of my "feels short". but how it remained in me, i can say that this was a good watch. judging from the synopsis, i thought it was gonna make me feel depressed after finishing but now i just smile instead. it reminds me of a sweet little girl who loves to ponder and appreciate how beautiful the world is. the romance is deep not in the body way but how they keep it through them

"im glad you found me in this corner of the world." such a beautiful film, perfect after the nightmare the anthem of the heart gave me

Movie done a really good job of roping me into it's world from the first five minutes which I really appreciate due to trying to find a movie for a while but none of them were able to keep me intrigued (looking at you ghibli). I love history and this movie did just the right amount of historical references that i was looking for.

The ending really messed me up and the death of lin was pretty messed up, the bombs dropping really shook me up and was horrible to watch the mothers child wander into the town with radiation burns and dying right outside their shop. I would have liked more action however i know this movie wasn't aiming for it so perhaps with my next movie ( ninja scrolls ) will live up to that. all in all 7/8 out of ten worth watching

I kept waiting for something big to happen and for the big tragedy to strike but it never happened... The highlight of this movie was when the little girl died and the main character lost her arm but then nothing happens... most of the event and air raids has no impact to it and treated rather as a just annoying thing. Some characters reaction also felt pretty weak, maybe because the voice acting wasn't all that good?

The movie focused mainly on poor civilians and how hard the life for some of them but even then it never hit me that way.

I like the childhood friend character the most I wish they kept him around more. For a moment there I thought she going to hook up with him but it's a good thing that she's loyal to her husband in the end.

6/10 for me

Perhaps I was watching for the wrong reason but I still felt disappointed after the movie ended

After watching "Grave of the Fireflies" my expectation was sort of high for this movie but ultimately didn't work for me for too much lighthearted moments rather than focusing on its main theme. Also it really feels like some of the developments were cut (from original source?) especially on the last half-hour but on the other hand adding more would lead to 3hr film however honestly most of the screentime went away from soL moments on the first hour which have not much thing to do with the harsh reality. Well, overall mix feeling for me here as I felt this was quite incomplete story development at the end, 5/10.

I gave it 8 but I got some mixed feelings about it too. First of all, I'm approaching WWII movies made by Japan with caution due to Japan often victimizing themselves when they were the aggressor (obviously, I'm not applauding the war crimes of the USA in form of atomic bombs either). But this one wasn't so bad...just ordinary people living and getting used to even something like a war (though, i found the emotional detachment too much in some moments...like when they were informed about their dead brother). Reminded me of when i visited Sarajevo and watched videos from the siege...when people just accepted snipers targeting them all the time as a part of their lives and were laughing at it. Humans are scary. Anyway, loved the art and animation.

Help me someone.
So, I understand 99% of the story (the sub i watched called Rin > Lin)
I understand that the girl in the attic was Rin who Suzu gave watermelon(Rin says that she was poor and someone had to eat the rinds and one day someone gave her the flesh of the watermelon)
I understand the kid at the end is most likely Rins.
What i dont understand is the Monster dude from the beginning and end. I assume its her brother because she depicts him like that in her drawing towards the end when shes talking to her sister about how he might still be alive living on an island and married a crocodile...but idk it doesnt really make sense specially why they met.

Wow, the slice of life was real.
Wholesome movie, can't say completely conforms to my taste (of wholesomeness) but I can acknowledge it as one nonetheless. I like how the tension between Mizuhara and Suzu was resolved while also building up her tension with Shuusaku who was a great husband to her. They were a great match though I'll admit before she got married I was kind of supporting her with Mizuhara. But once the tension was resolved, I was all for them together and even before that I started to prefer them to be so.
When Suzu lost her hand, from then I was teary-eyed and wanted to cry till near the end. Harumi dying and how everyone moved past it. How Lin was an important character throughout despite her small screen-time. Very well-done movie.

I honestly don't get the loving of this film, I was bored throught until the third act and even then it was too late to really get my attention to care for these bland characters. Clearly wants to accompany Grave of the Fireflies as a wartime tearjerker but this didn't come close to getting me to care. Main girl main personality trait is being an airhead and everyone else is forgettable completely. One guy who had something more of an interesting persona was the original guy she painted by the ocean so of course he was ignored so we could have paint drying home scenes as she struggles to be a housewife.

It was okay. Great background art. The characters looked pretty samey; I had difficulty distinguishing them at times. The movie somehow manages to simultaneously meander a lot (it's abysmally slow at times), while also not stopping to take a moment to breathe. Pretty melodramatic at points. The music was forgettable. That said, I actually managed to finish it, which says a lot. Wouldn't rewatch or recommend it, though.

Wow. That was an amazing movie. I don't think I can even put to words everything I thought about the movie right now.

Suzu is such a lovely person. Throughout the movie I really loved her, I wanted the best for her, wanted to root for her, and just enjoyed her presence despite her being quite the klutz.

Though it started off pretty cheerfully, as it slowly moved to the second half of the film it became more serious and darker. The worst moment was when the bomb blew up and took Harumi... My eyes were watering there. I didn't think Harumi would die. Just goes to show how no one is immune from the tragedies of war.

The foreboding in this movie, knowing what happened to Hiroshima... I fully expected her entire family to die. Glad that at least Sumi was able to survive, and there's still hope that their mother is alive. I wasn't ready for the moment the flash appeared. How slow it went also added to how heavy and sad it felt.

I didn't like what Shosuke did. Did he allow Suzu to sleep with Mizuhara? If so, what the hell was he trying to accomplish by that? I didn't like where it was going. Thankfully, Suzu didn't do that. But I was angry at Shosuke too, just like Suzu.

The amount of historicity in this movie is just amazing. It really feels like an era so different from ours and the attention to historical detail is amazing, especially in how the families live their daily lives and how husband and wife interacted.

I can't organise my thoughts about this movie right now. It's left me speechless and amazed. I'll have to organise my thoughts later. I was going between giving this a 9 or 10, but now I've decided that this is a masterpiece and deserves a 10/10.

P.S. Sumi is beautiful, but Suzu's more charming.

Beautiful movie. 9/10. Really loved that movie. Luckily Suzu didn't go to Hiroshima. I really liked Suzu and this had the perfect amount of slice of life which I loved.

This movie was so great, it made me grateful for what I have in life and that I didn't have to live through times like those..
I'm Bruneian and I like anime. And Manchester United. And fat cats.

I could held almost any tearjerking moments in this anime, but when the kid (Who supposedly Rin's daughter) grabs Suzu's hand i lost it, that part is just so devastating but heartwarming in same time because she can lives normally with them after all..

That was really good, almost devastating to watch and think about how people lived during the world wars.

People struggling just to get one from one day to another, avoiding the air raids. I can't even begin to understand what living through that hell must've been like but seeing the family take joy in the little things in life was beautiful but poignant.

I felt the effect of the bomb blast when Suzu and Harumi were taking cover in the shelter through my screen. That scene was absolutely terrifying, the aerial shot of the bombing after was crazy. That sequence was incredibly well taken.
Harumi's death was devastating. T.T

My only gripe with the movie was that early on, the scenes jump from one place to another and I wasn't particularly clear on what was happening until after Suzu marries. The plotline with Mizuhara seemed a little tacked on but I didn't mind it too much. Where is this stuff about Rin and Shuusaku that people are talking about? Did I somehow miss everything related to that?

It was a smooth slice of life show at first but the war twisted and turned their lives around. It's nice to witness someone's life during World War II and it is definitely emotional. The end is bittersweet as it reminds us of the damages of the war but at the same time how they all moved on after that. This was a really good movie overall.
