Why aren't there any more gory shows? I feel like the amount of gore from the 90s-00s is as much as the amount of nudity in today's Anime. Is it illegal to make shows like Elfen Lied now? Well there is a fairly new Anime that is gory and that is Corpse Party but it's only an OVA and not released for television. WHAT HAPPENED? |

Isn't there an anime from the previous season that has gore? Dunno. Probably just a change in business. |

I'm too lazy to look up any sources but Japanese TV has become stricter recently with showing gore. It could be related to real life violence in Japan (for example, what happened with the ending of School Days) or some other reason but anime nowadays that has gore is heavily censored for TV broadcasts. The only recent example I can think of is Tokyo Ghoul. While it was airing, the blood was turned black for most scenes or they would just black out a majority of the picture. Because of that it kind of makes sense that not as many are being made for TV. But like the above poster pointed out, few are still being made.. |

Devilman crybaby was not just violent, it was more violent than any iteration before it in an already infamously brutal series. I feel like if you took a sip everytime someone got dismembered in that series youd die of alcohol poisoning. Yeah maybe you could argue the art style offsets that cause its more styalized, but hell no you see people getting their guts strewn, heads exploding, getting sliced into multiple piece, devoured, and all that pretty consistently. Anime violence just isnt as prevalent because of censors and OVA's dying out, but its been that way since the mid 90's. The hyper violence of stuff really only came from 1980's ova's that bled out in the early 90's. The really violent stuff was the big outliers, even today there are some really gory things out there, 18if's 2nd episode and weirdly only its 2nd episode, inuyashiki was fairly violent though much less than gantz, shiki last 8 episodes were essentially covered in blood and people having their heads smashed in, parasyte was full of dismemberment and body horror, and above all else devilman crybaby cause jesus christ that show was so fucking gory. romagia said: very early 90's there was, but not much. On TV fuck no there was less than there is now. later half of the 90's was when anime was putting alot of focus on more realistic movements in the more mature movies and shows of the time leading to blood getting toned way the fuck down mostly. i dont think it was that many gore in 90-00.. |

It's because todays japan is more censor heavier than in previos years. If is's comes to games or tv you cant show anymore slotted body or blood without colouring it. For example in games too violent games don't become a rating where in most countries you can go ahead with +18. Today's japan can compete with censorship heavy countries like australia, new zealand and germany. |

Less focus on OVAs for a market base which had very little limits on content. I would also argue there hasn't really been a shift in the amount of nudity or if any it's likely lesser due to the limitations of broadcasts regarding censorship and again a shift from OVA focused markets. I mean with modern censorship the scenes themselves may be more lewd but the amount of Nudity as a result of the censoring would be less than say an original Gundam series. |

Theres odd censorship everywhere |

Well it could be since the majority of seasonal shows nowadays are slice of life and school-based comedy shows, more intended for 'less mature' audiences, whereas back then there were more 'adult' shows. Plus, SoL is generally more popular now then other genres, which means that creators will tend to make more series' revolving around those genres I don't know about you but it'd be weird to see a slice of life filled with gore That being said, it's not like gore is completely gone yet. Monogatari series (Especially the prequel movies) has a lot of gore in them and they're relatively new |

I feel like in terms of TV anime though violence has always been pretty consistent. I cant really even think of that many R rated anime from the 80's for TV anime cause alot of them were aimed at children though fanservice was far more prominent and nudity heavy. Violent imagery almost always seemed deligated towards movies and ovas |

I’m pretty sure gore is highly censored, when it’s still present. If you watch a TV broadcast version originally aired on Japanese TV, it’ll almost always be censored unless it’s after a certain late night timeblock. Kind of like how some cable channels in the US allow the usage of “fuck” in TV-MA broadcasts after 9-10PM, but not before then. |

Seriously?? -_- I was under the impression that anime became more and not less gorey after 2010, i mean, nowadays a lot of anime is rated R - 17+ and up for violence, don't those have a lot of gore? Before 2010 gorey anime was mostly restricted to Ova's/Movies was it not? Television anime was seldom rated above PG-13 - Teens 13, and most anime censored gorey stuff from the manga, like, compare the level of violence of the old Fullmetal Alchemist and D.Gray-man to Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood and D.Gray-man Hallow, who are much more gorey than their previous ataptations. Didn't gore in anime become the norm with stuff like Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, Mirai Nikki, Psycho Pass and etc.? |

Gory anime is still made nowadays and many examples have been given in this thread but we will never see outrageous stuff like Genocyber or Elfen Lied because studios are trying to make as much money as possible and violent late night anime is not the way to go . |

So your saying there's different levels of gore? Makes sense, since some anime are not consistently gorey, like Owari no Seraph who got toned down after a while. |

Anime (Especially OVA's) around that time were going through an experimental edgy period. As a side note, just because something's gory doesn't means it's good, there are literally hundreds of OVA's from then to prove it. Anime today (Specifically TV anime), however, had new requirements placed upon it around 2012 due to shows that were basically hentai or gore fests getting past the censors. |
