Glad to see Houseki no Kuni numbers! It leaves the door open for a possible sequel. The anime is largely overlooked here in MAL because of CGI. I cannot get Phos's "Umi ni... Umi ni kimi ni niau shigoto wa nakatta. Gomen. Ashita wa... Ashita wa motto ganbaru kara. Yurushite." out of my head. It was so powerful. One of the best voice acting of the calendar year for me. More people need to watch this anime. Also, LL domination as expected. |

Houseki doing good. I wonder if it's because the cheaper BD price or audience really love it. Guess it's proof japanese watcher doesn't mind CG? Kemono friends, Frame arm girls, Blame, Godzilla movie, all well accepted by japanese. Kino is not selling as much as I expected. Imo 2003 ver is indeed better than 2017. NeoAnkara said: *9. *4,774 **4,774 Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru: Washio Sumi no Shou Even though it sort of remaster version of movie it still doing great. Now just need to wait for Yuusha no Shou. According to staff interview https://mantan-web.jp/article/20171211dog00m200021000c.html the movie trilogy already sold 7k+ each. Oricon didn't record it because they sold the BDs in the theaters when they screened. 4.7k is a nice addition. |

Lmao the physical media in japan is dying so fast. I used to think AoT's decline was because of the long delays but after Kekkai Sensen, Osomatsu-san, Durarara and other titles aimed at female otakus, it's becoming much more clear that it wasn't the case. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Yuri on Ice also had a big drop. Yaboku said: What the heck happened to Osomatsu-san though? Female fans losing interest + this time the first two volumes had no event tickets I believe. |

Is it wrong for me to have the theory that Osomatsu-san had such a big drop because of the Hiroshi Kamiya marriage scandal? I know that Osomatsu-san has a stacked cast but Kamiya is the biggest fish of them all, and my impression is that Osomatsu-san got supported by the fujoshis more as an idol series than anything else. |

I wonder if we can call they as the most successful titles this season with the exception of Love Live? Vol. 1 of Houseki no Kuni was competing with "vol. 4 special edition" of PP and "vol. 2 box" of MiA. And they weren't even on TV in the same season; PP and MiA were summer shows. The sales of the HnK volumes that are yet to be released might fluctuate as well. It's not really an apt comparison, is my point. Over 5000 is definitely not a bad start, though. |

So, if I understand correctly, this is the undisputed hit of this season? Yes, it's probably a hit, but not undisputed just yet (we only know for sure that the manga is very popular). For example, March Comes in like a Lion 2nd Season vol. 1 and Girls Last Tour vol. 1 are releasing in January, and they might sell better. And extrapolating the overall (cumulative) sales from the first volume's sales can produce results that later turn out to be wildly inaccurate. BluRay sales by themselves aren't conclusive either, as there are other ways anime can make money, e.g. music and merch. There are also more and more shows each year that expect to make their money back through mobile game tie-ins (Princess Principal has an official mobile game "companion", for example), which these BluRay listings don't take into account, same as music and merch sales. Maellirn said: Why Japanese Weaboos like Love live so much??? One reason why Love Live is successful is that idol fans are more likely to be dedicated to buying merchandise. It's not necessarily indicative of the preferences of "Japanese Weeboos" in general. |

RobertBobert said: So, if I understand you correctly, do the Japanese gradually discover more and more opportunities for getting good commercial returns from successful titles? A question of such scope is above my paygrade (though I'm a total amateur, so that doesn't say much), thus I can only give my interpretation of what's happening, and you're better off doing research yourself. The markets are changing worldwide, that is, people may not be willing to pay for certain things anymore, but they may be willing to pay for other things. Some methods have become less viable, but new technology has allowed other methods to take over (like companion mobile games). If my limited information is correct, the anime market is growing (there's more and more money thrown on the pile, as e.g. international streaming services like Netflix and Amazon want a slice of the pie too), but the industry is kind of broken (yay for capitalism and Japanese work culture). For example, there's a serious animator shortage, as the job pays criminally little, so studios are forced to outsource to (usually foreign) subcontractors more and more of the work. Okay, I got a litle off-topic, but my point is that the idea that the story is more complicated than the Japanese corporations gloriously discovering new ways of making money off anime. On the mobile game thing, this video might explain it better than I did: |

Stripesu said: Can't say it's shocking. The wave of relevance is gonna kill anime that can't make seasons one year after the next and it's a shame. This may be one of the prices we pay for the trend of more and more new TV anime coming out each year (in addition to the human cost, like the "animator situation"). New TV anime, even popular series, may fade from the collective memory faster than ever before. Perhaps not into complete obscurity, but enough so that sequels aren't as viable as they would have been, say, ten years ago. |
