If you originally came from another country, how popular is anime? Also just don't say "Not popular at all" I want specifics, like "A little bit, but merandise and just watching anime is not very available." For me, in the Philippines, a lot of my cousins there know anime, but its usually hard to get merch there, but they can get a lot of DVDs (bootleg mind you) for cheap, 40 pesos (around $1) and they can sort of find manga, but usually just random volumes. |

Well, we live in the same country, people knows anime, merchandise are here and there, but never the amount I see with other people. To be fair, I guess I haven't just met anyone who are that deep into anime. Unlike me who has *cough* figurines of my waifu Yui *cough*. I guess it's well-known when it comes to general knowledge of what anime is and what the go to ones, but I guess they aren't as passionated as I am. |

-no anime on TV except Pokemon and Youkai Watch -very few DVD releases, mostly older stuff -very few dubbed anime, more voice-over than actual dub -anime conventions here and there -more and more manga getting licensed, even unpopular ones, for some reason -I personally don't know any anime fans irl (Poland) |

Specifying the country would be nice guys........ Buying TV shows is like a culture shock to me xD cant believe even Philippines. Anime is on the decline in Romania..We had an anime block called Animax ~10 years but that died in 2014. Now i think we only have the usual kids stuff... like pokemon and youkai watch not shounens. As of 2017 both anime conventions in my city are on hiatus, both citing a declining interest in anime and manga :< I've seen manga in the big book shops but i generally think it's too expensive.. needless to say all are imports Ultimately, i'd say it's more niche than in the west or far east, especially when it comes to spending money, but at least we had a golden age of anime on TV that built a fan base. |

Lots of conventions. The most conventions we had is like one convention a month? The longest month we dont have convention is 3 months. It is also ingrained in the culture of normies. Sao, re zero, and aot is severely popular. Even local drama shows has some cosplay and shiz. |

Well, it is quite popular here in brazil, mostly because of the japanese immigrants (Brazil has the 2nd biggest japanese population in the world) so you can imagine that it had a great influence among people here. There are conventions that occurs every year here, although it is nothing like USA/Japan, but it is really interesting (São Paulo one is the biggest). The tv here passes some mainstream animes like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Pokemon, Diigimon, etc, and also i've seen Fullmetal, HXH, Death Note, etc. And i do know a lot of people that watch/read anime and manga. Unfortunately, due the corrupt government and its criminal taxes it is almost illegal to have manga, figures, dvds, almost any product related to it. |

Anime get official dubs and air in the Television and not just one or two per year (and that since decades, though only for popular Anime like OP, Naruto, Pokemon, etc,) lately I found stuff like Guilty Crown, HOTD, Akame ga Kill, Death Note, and many more on television. You can buy popular Manga in official book stores here, stuff like SnK, SAO, some yaoi ones, and of course something like Naruto, etc. and that since years as well. Now there is sometimes even merch in some private shops that sell stuff like that, depends on the owners. Though bigger franchises stuff (yugioh, etc) can be bought in almost every bigger store. |

There's no place in Europe where it's more popular than here. You hear sometimes people calling my country the "european sanctuary of manga" and stuff like that. AFAIK, we also have the largest number of licensed titles there manga wise, outside of english releases (which are... kind of cheating because it can be released in several important countries :p). It's also pretty damn high ranked even when counting all the country in the world. For anime, not sure. More than many country as well, probably? But maybe not as big compared to manga. There was already polenty of popular dubbed anime more than 30 years ago here, although now it seems most peoples prefer to have them airing in sub instead? Not really sure tbh. |

In Vietnam most people still thinks anime are just Japanese-speaking cartoon. There is an anime community but it's not very large. There are fansub groups. Many of them. But it seems they prefer going on with their keyboards war to improving translation quality/speed which is why I only watch eng-sub. Things like Kimi no Na wa or Koe no Katachi got to cinemas. Other than that, no goods. No merchandises. No DVD/BDs. As for manga they only publish super famous ones (One Piece, Naruto, Gintama, etc.) Lately there've been people importing figure and figurine to sell but in a very small scale. Also there is a TV channel for cartoon but beside western and Chinese cartoon they only air some of the popular anime like Naruto or Pokemon. Its audience is mainly little kids. Then one day some guy decided to air OreImo on that channel and it caused an uproar. But that's it. |

Very niche. You can find some popular manga in comic stores here but that's about it. It's really rare to find people who like anime here and sometimes they have never even heard of it. I live in Belgium btw |

It's pretty unpopular in Sweden. People think anime is nothing but Pokémon and similar kids shows. You can barely find any Swedish BD/DVD-editions of anime. The ones you can buy are mostly imported from the UK. Few people probably even know what manga is. |

I don't think Anime/manga is that popular in America. Sure I can go into a used bookstore and get some cheap obscure manga every now and then but the only place to get good stuff without ordering it online or is at an Anime Convention. My family doesn't know about it. I have friends who like it and sometimes they had anime clubs at the Library but that's pretty much it. |

Well, I live in the UK and anime has definitely gotten way more popular in the last few years over here. When I first got into anime, there was no merchandise anywhere and nobody even knew what it was aside from calling it "weird Chinese cartoons". Nowadays, there are shops near me entirely dedicated to anime merch alone and even if people don't necessarily watch anime, they tend to know what it is and can spot certain series and characters. It's difficult to find people who don't at least know about Attack on Titan, One Punch Man, Tokyo Ghoul and Black Butler. Where I am, people are pretty vocal about liking anime though. Maybe it's not that it's anymore popular here than it is anywhere else, just that people tend to be more confident about professing their love of the stuff?? |

France is one of the countries that sell the most manga outside of japan. We also have two sites other than crunchyroll/netflix/amazon that license anime, cool dubs (despite what the haters say), some really neat anime cons where you can get dvd/blurays for less than 20$ (tfw you can get entire shows like evangelion, cowboy bebop or samurai champloo for 10€). There are also a few tv channels that broadcast a lot of non-mainstream anime. I'd say manga is close to mainstream success but not anime. |

For anime merchandise there's only one small store in the capital city of my country, but that's it. No DVD's/Blu-rays are sold, no anime (even children anime) on TV or movies in theaters. Not sure how popular manga is, but the largest book store in my country has a few popular manga like Faity Tail, One Piece, Noragami, Deadman Wonderland and even some manga like ''A Silent Voice'' and Owari no Seraph. |
Help the industry and buy Blu-rays and DVD's. Noragami is the best anime ever. |

I would say in my country its very popular. I live in Germany. Every year we have Japan-days in different citys. Companies from Japan come and introduce their stuffs. People from germany make cosplays and enjoy it. Also not anime-fans are coming to these days and enjoy it with their families. They make Cosplay and Karaoke (of course Anime songs) competitions. We also have many stores for anime merchandise. They are a bit small, but we have them! We also have many internet sites to buy merchandise or in big book stores they also sell mangas. We have a german TV-Channel and they have a Anime-Night on fridays. Many people know what anime is, also if they dont like it. So all in all I would say anime is very popular in germany. (Happy me!) |

I was from the PH, but in Manila, last time I visited there, there was a lot of weeb stores. There was one in Mall of Asia, and I think they were legit. But Manila is the richest city in the PH, so the difference in the distribution in wealth might affect that. Now I am in Murica, and let's just say they host so many weeb conventions here, aka Anime Expo. |

Italy is in very good relationships with Japan and its culture, there are many comic-cons every year in every region of the country and there isn't the toxic culture of hate for their fans that english-speaking countries have. Or at least...not yet. It's slowly infecting, but it's very very small for now. |

We're from the same country so this might not be the most interesting story OP. It's alright, you can find anime merchandise sold by stores sometimes in select malls here. Although there are a lot of bootlegs sold here also. I sometimes find random volumes of manga in some used books bookstore. I also order light novels online but there's shop here that delivers locally so I'm quite satisfied. Don't know what else to say aside from the fact that there is also a lot of anime fans here or at least people who know about anime. One time our professor asked us to list out our hobbies and almost half of the class mentioned watching anime so there's that. |

Well, here in Brazil there are big communities that love anime, but not something like in the USA or in other parts of the world that receive several animated films, for example. An example of this is that Kimi no na wa (Your Name) only arrived in Brazil in October 2017 and only came to a very restricted line of cinemas in the big cities. |

It's quite easy to get merchandise here in Bulgaria, and anime conventions are on the rise, but in generel anime is not popular here, it was popular before 10-15 years ago with shows like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Naruto, some Ghibli movies and some other popular anime, but now there isn't any TV channel that air anime, the only exception was this summer with Inuyasha The Final Act, which quite surprised me. |

Anime is not very popular in Hong Kong, but I think anyone who born post 80s know something about anime because we grew up watching TV and anime is on TV... It should be still quite popular among secondary school and collages, but I think it is not as popular as before. I remember when around K-on is airing, liking anime is actually considered somewhat fashionable. Now the teens in HK probably prefer Korean entertainment over Japan. |

You know I am from Republic of Moldova(in Europe) so nobody is interested in this country. Anime is not popular and its unusual to watch it here. Many think it is just a common cartoon that children watch on TV. At shops we don't have any manga or something related to anime. Online it is avalible, very avalible. Evryone in our country can pirate anything. We can watch it online anytime on any website. To watch it on etflix or any other legal sources it is VERY EXPENSIVE for us. Beside this I have a lot of anime friends and try to make it more popular among my group of friends. I love ANIME! |

Not that much, most people thing that all anime is porn and is for kids, the ones who watch anime usually just go for the crap shounen/fanservice ones (hence the bias). Manga is also complicated, the releases are really delayed, its hard to find a series with volumes in the correct order and people just dont care. |

it's very VERY popular among University students , I mean , as I mentioned in another thread , all my classmates watch or know about anime , there are Anime conventions almost every month and it's kinda easy to find merchandise related to Anime . When I travel I always see people watching Anime (or The Walking Dead/GOT/Arrow ) on their cellphones or tablets , I don't enjoy talking to them though ,it's kinda sad when you realize that you're the only one who likes Shoujo and Slice of Life Anime , they're more into conventional genres such as Battle Shounen or Spokon . |
