Watching anime together online as a group/with friends

I won't post a link just yet but I've built a little web app thing that could make it easier to watch anime (and other videos as well) together with someone else, or a group online.

I wondered if anyone would be interested in talking about it and going through it through DMs etc... I've seen people mention 'syncplay' and a couple of others so it would be cool to see how it compares.

Let me know if you wanna help out / play around with it.

Me and a friend (and sometimes more) do this, we've watched a lot, like 3 seasons of Minami-ke + other stuff like shitty shorts for 10+ hours at a time.

Do you use rabb.it like Tsunski or the old 3...2...1... method?

This is a pretty good idea, although I know with me it would be hard to nail down the schedule that we could all be available. Are used to do this in college when a lot of us could get together and watch it in the same room. Alas the days of Internet laziness....

Never saw the need to use some random website or app for what a simple 3..2...1..go! can do just as well. I've simulwatched literally hundreds of anime like that. There's a thing like overreliance on technology, you know :>.

The biggest problem when it comes to larger groups of people isn't the synchronicity but rather the scheduling itself. Trust me, it's hard to get the timing right with more than 3 people especially when everyone is from different timezones. Plus chat becomes a mess too and isn't really like a conversation anymore when too many people are involved. So I never really wanted to simulwatch in larger groups anyway.
I probably regret this post by now.

Sounds like a cool concept, though I've already watched some shit in a group on rabb.it which pretty much everyone uses.

I guess it's a more sociable way to do it without it having to be in person. Like twitch or live on youtube.

Either way what I'm working on isn't just for Anime but I wanted to talk to people about it - similar to Rabb.it except you just drop in a link and go.

Watching anime with friends is funny and enjoyable tbh. Especially with friend whom we could discuss with, not just hanging around. Mostly on rabb.it with screen sharing extension.

Hey, I'm interested in helping out programming-wise if possible; I assume you've already gotten somewhere with the JS frontend, how about the backend?

I'm really interested in this idea because it's nice to chat with others watching the same thing, or just find a random group of people to watch something with, I really think there's a use case for people who are looking for like-minded people, especially for more niche stuff.

I've been using http://rabb.it and while it is nice the UI isn't too good, there's no search function, and it works by remote desktop to a virtual PC somewhere on a server which is rather overkill imo.

syncplay works with standalone media players but you need to setup the syncplay server and point your media player to the syncplay client running locally and already have the video downloaded; while foolproof it is cumbersome.

It would be awesome to have a contained web app which does this and syncs video players in real time through WebRTC (look at https://github.com/Justineo/coplay)

I have DMed you, if there is a link or somewhere we can talk it through just tell me

Naah watching online with someone works only if u know the ppl. Since I'm too lazy and usually just lay on bed with my hello kitty dress and watch anime so I'd be too distracted since they'll probably have too much energy, while I might fall asleep anytime. LOL.

I'm more into meeting friends and watching tho it happens rarely cuz everyone is busy and I could watch anime like all of a sudden when everyone is sleeping.

There's already a website that lets you synchronize videos. It only works with Youtube, though :/

I've always found rabbit to be slow and frustrating. Having folks do their video stuff at the same time made it worse. Just chat was fine though.
If your app runs better than rabbit then that'd be great!
I'd love to help test it, but I'm pretty busy, sadly.;;
I should be doing a whole bunch of things other than posting this reply right now to be honest.

I love the idea of watching anime with a group of friends...
...Depending on the anime.
If I'm watching something heavy like Monster, or atmospheric like Mushishi, then no.
But if it's a comedy, action, or (best one) a "so bad it's good" anime like King's Game, Hell yes.

I have only done the 3...2....1.... thing mostly but i have done a few sessions of rabb.it with some friends watching hentai together, both males and females so it was pretty fun i wouldn't mind doing more down the road but for the most part i just watch things solo.

How do you not use rabb.it? Only downside is rabb blacklisting popular anime sites (bc of heavy traffic I assume). I usually rip the direct link to episodes from my browser and copy to rabb's browser.

+1

I've been simulwatching with friends on MAL since 2011, hundreds of shows and I never saw the need for any tools or apps like syncplay or anything else. Seems like a classic case of overcomplicating something that, at the base, is extremely simply and doesn't need any accessories.

e: lol this was an old thread so I just repeated myself. Welp.
I probably regret this post by now.

Tried rabbit before with a bunch of online people I knew, wouldn't necessarily call them friends but it wasn't the best idea. Maybe it was the wrong crowd of people but it toxic memeing shit with not much discussions.

I like pretty much simulwatching the way @Pullman described it as, like I've tried most of the options but it doesn't even really fit into my life right now anyways trying to schedule when to watch x episode together whether sync with video or through rabbit.

I can't say i know from experience, since i don't know anyone to do that with. What are you supposed to do if someone has to go do something, make everyone pause? Too much chaos for me. Watching with a group of people seems like it would be more of a hassle than it would be enjoyable. Using something like skype to discuss is much easier. Buuuuut maybe that's just me.

Not really interested. I rather watch anime at my own pace, because having to watch with others is a form of obligation.
