Old season is ending, and again I'm thinking "this is it, everything looks like shit I'm going to stop watching anime". Two weeks later I have again at least four airing in watched list. I was supposed to stop watching at 50 day mark. I didn't. I tried quitting for good last autumn and lasted five months. I keep coming back. I'm somehow afraid that I'll be missing out of some brilliant show that comes out of nowhere like Madoka.

Not one week goes by without me wondering at least once just exactly what I'm doing with my life. I think I would be much happier without anime. It is getting stale. I know all the tropes already. It feels like there is nothing left to discover. I'm just like this brainless zombie watching anime. I don't enjoy it anymore. I really don't.

Recently I've started trying to substitute it with real movies and drama series, just to end up watching both of those plus anime. Please help. Any tips are welcome.

If you can't stop watching anime it is most likely because you have nothing else to do. Work out or something lol.

You know it may sound dumb but if you just go out for some walk like 10-20 minutes, you will probably feel better already :D

Umm lack of exercise is not the problem. I hit the gym 3-5 times a week and take a long walk daily. Then I come back home and default to watching these stupid cartoons. While walking I think "hmm as soon as I get home, I'm going to review some chinese characters". 5 minutes after door closes I am watching anime instead. That's the problem. Please help.

Try some new things? When I'm tired from anime I go to J- Drama. It still has the Japanese feel of it, but pretty different as a whole.
There are some really good series out there like:
Gunshi Kanbee (historical drama of the samurai- Kuruda Kanbee)
Dragon Zakura
Legal High (court comedy)
Liar Game (based on the manga, but has some changes that makes it different)
Bitte Blood (police comedy)

and many many more

Quickest way. Cut your connection to anime source.

Just moderately watch it. MODERATELY.
Control yourself.
Do something else in your life. Has nothing else to do?
Read book.

I don't get your problem :D
as I see it you cant stop because you still like the anime but youre just trying to insult yourself/your taste basing on other's standards(maybe subconsciously) anime is only shit if youre not enjoying it
clichés are repeated because they work and people love it even if they don't admit it
its really easy to quit if youre commited to it

You could go old school.

90's or even 80's anime, or you could switch to manga...more choices.
or watch some TV.. Got & the 100 is pretty good. better yet try reading a book.
If you don't like to read then get audio books.

now if this is really just about changing your life style...then well try finding a new hobby. get an instrument, go camping. find something productive to do.

It's probably because Anime is Addictive, so I would recommend to find a hobby that is as addictive as Anime. I suggest Video Games, they are as Addictive & Time Consuming as Anime is. Something else I would do is change my daily routine, you're probably stuck in a routine where you subconsciously give Anime a lot of your free time, why don't you try to re Format & Organize your daily routine forcefully where Anime gets a lot less time than usual thus giving yourself time to do other things and keep a reasonable distance between Anime & yourself.

A lot of anime are not worth watching so I think you should be more picky and find another hobby

Watch Boku no Pico and then followed by Utsu Musume Sayuri afterward without pausing or skipping until you lose interest in anime completely, repeat if necessary.

Why would you want to get rid of your hobby? Having something you like so much is great. Even if there's bad anime that's not an excuse to feel bad about it. Whatever you get into there's gonna be good and bad stuff.

Persoanlly I really do appreciate most of the stuff I consider "bad" in anime. Just like everything in this world, they have their place and substance.

you can just stop? i mean, why you need even desperate about it? anime is not drugs. there is no harm if you stop it.

you could substitute a hobby you want to give up on (anime) by starting a new hobby or focusing on other!
try watching tv series. that might help.

but friend… nothing compares to anime.

if you really want to stop watching anime, go outside. Yep, go outside, discover what the world has to offer. There are lots of things you can do. .

Shift to playing games/watching movies.
Idk what you mean about disliking watching anime but being unable to stop. When I got tired of anime, you couldn't pay me to watch anything.

dude, if you want to stop then stop watching it simple right ? why continue it ? i'm getting confused at that one. if you don't enjoy it then why continue it ? it will just pissed you off more than before right ? i mean, if you don't want to stop watching airing anime because you are afraid that you would missed a great anime. why not you watch a show by it's popularity, watch 1 or 3 episode, if it is really great show to you then continue it, if it's not they stop watching it.

if you want to stop watching anime then stop watching it and do something else/your other hobby so that you will not back to anime again.
there are still many things which you might like outside your house probably :D

or why not search for more anime(not the airing ones). you might find the one that you like.

or maybe just watch Boku no Pico 10 times and ask yourself "what is anime".

If you really feel it's developed into an addiction you can't get rid of, try to avoid the situations where you'll end up watching anime. If you know you'll watch a bunch of it as soon as you open your computer, don't open it. Do something else. Cutting your internet for a while is a bit extreme, but do that if nothing else helps. I was without it for a couple of days recently, and it was pretty therapeutic. I ended up doing a jigsaw puzzle for hours at a time.

If there's nothing worthwhile to watch in a season, then don't force yourself to find something lol. To me it sounds like you're weak-willed, pal, even though "hitting the gym 3-5 times a week" would suggest otherwise.

1. Delete all the bookmarks of streaming/downloading sites you have
2. Don't go to those links again

You can't quit cold turkey. Take however much you normally watch and floor it at the lowest point in your average then say that you won't watch more than that in a day. Slowly go down until you're watching little enough that it isn't negatively affecting your life in any way (I personally think 2 episodes a day would be good enough, but you may have different opinions). I used anime to break out of my porn addiction so I'm sure you can use something else to break out of your anime addiction. If nothing can replace it then it's obvious that it isn't something that can be put away so easily.

I'm amazed you're talking about this when you don't even have more than 100 days spent watching anime.
Even more considering you joined MAL in 2010,I don't know if it's just me but after I joined MAL I started watching even more anime.
When I'm not in the mood for anime I try reading manga or playing video games, I know I should go out for a walk because that always makes me feel better but I'm too lazy to change clothes and get my shoes on and go out.

Those who say they watch anime because they have nothing else to do don't understand the glory that anime is.

And the problem is not that I spend a lot of time watching anime, my problem (I think the OP is referring to this as well) is that I forget my responsibilities like studying and stuff and watch anime instead.

First of all, think - why do you want to quit anime?
* Nothing bad will happen if you watch anime for the rest of your life, you know.

* No, you would not actually start working more if you just quit anime. You'll simply find another source of entertainment. Anime is rather safe - unlike MMORPGs and parties, it comes in convenient 30-minute chunks.

* If you really want to start working more, think about ways to increase your endurance, brain capability or interest in work. Feel free to share your results with us, for we aren't that hard-working too.
