Keep in mind, the anime with the best story does not have to be your absoluyte favorite. Many people would say their favorite anime is Clannad but Clannad's story is pretty basic and done before.

My favorite story is Little Busters Refrain. The story and learning how everything unfolded really caught me by surprise and kept me glued to the screen. Watchingthe characters deal with the conflict of the story was pretty sad, but I'm glad I had that adventure.

Shin Sekai Yori was also quite amazing in the story and atmosphere areas The complexity and the dark themes this story took were quite refreshing and made for a great ride.

Nagi no Asukara, read the abve.

SAO. Still my favorite, tho. If I had to choose a 2nd, it'd be Tamayura. Why? Because it didn't get boring at all. It worked really well, portraying different aspects of the game. It showed how SAO was like life: it isn't limited to a single genre. Also, the romance was perfectly paced and everything was impact-ant and remarkable.

It had practically no story. The anime stood out and was good due to characters, their interactions and development. The romance was quite well done too.

Pure story-wise, I would say probably Steins;Gate. Also Kingdom as it is (losely) based on the unification of ancient China. Death Note and Code Geass due to plot twists.

Steins;gate fucking in depth as shit, made me rethink my life

Shinsekai Yori for great foreshadowing, interesting themes, fantastic world building and some of the best anime villains the medium has to offer. I have not finished Legend of Galactic Heroes but it definitely is another great one so far because of the main characters, world building and interesting themes. The show can be kind of silly at times like how it has medieval weapons in a sci-fi setting although it is very entertaining if you suspend your disbelief.

Steins;Gate and Only Yesterday.

Steins;gate, because its constantly sticks with its own concept of time travel and time loop, the story is very well executed too.

Only Yesterday; It's a Movie though but still anime, In my opinion this is how a Slice of Life shows should be, it will make you rethink about everything you have done in your life till this very point, and make you fell nostalgic too.

I think Shiki put their story together the best. The whole "vampire cliche" is nothing compared to it tbh.

Pretty much. Honorable mentions for Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen, Maria-sama ga Miteru, Suzumiya Haruhi, Nodame Cantabile, Gosick, Hyouka.

Some stories that seemed good but were too convoluted or just too over-the-top would be Ergo Proxy and Rainbow respectively.

School Days. It is about a guy who bangs a lot of girls and gets people in real life jealous. It breaks the fourth wall. Makoto is a better strategist than Yang Wenli and Reinhard. Sekai is more cunning than Rubinski. Rapist friend is better than redhair.

The best story in anime for me is between: Naruto, FMA:B or DTB.

Naruto because it is the story of a young boy who was put in a tough situation since birth and thanks to his companions and mentors did his best to be noticed and treated nicely by anyone! He gains respect and admiration from his peers and does not give into his anger caused by scorn from the villagers. The Cast of Naruto are very easy to relate to... For me Rock Lee is a mirror image of myself because I am also not talented nor special like everyone else.

FMA:B because it is the story of a young boy who did what he knew to solve his problem even though it was against the laws on Alchemy(Revive His Mother with Alchemy) He lost part of his body and his brother lost his entire body because of this... This story is so good because the Bond between Edward and Alphonse is so strong that either brother would give up their lives for each other and the trials that they are put through are tough to watch but seeing them pull through is worth it.

Darker Than Black is a great story because it is about a young man trying his best to find his place in the world even though he is a Paid Assassin. He gets powers from his sister and he is supposed to lose all his emotions from gaining this power but he stays the same... Hei is not supposed to feel but he is still Human and he care about his companions and is willing to make sacrifices for the people he cares about.

I would say that #1 For me would be NARUTO up until the PEIN ARC, then FMA: B, then Darker Than Black, then Lastly BERSERK.

If more people would reply seriously to these topics, I might have a lot more anime on my PTW. I don't really blame anyone for not doing so, though; this question is way too open-ended. There's so many different types of stories, and many aren't directly comparable (e.g. to use the common joke, K-On vs. LotGH). Opinions can differ vastly as it is even within genres and story types.

At that, what "story" constitutes will likely vary from person to person as well. Does it only refer to the plot, or does it encompass everything related (plot, characterization, themes, etc.)?

In short, this thread doesn't set enough boundaries to make it conducive to meaningful discussion.

The problem with this question is that a story is easily affected by other things - character development, art style, soundtrack, thematic exploration. I'm not even sure what 'story' means anymore. All of my favorite anime have pretty basic stories and are amazing only because of how they tell it.

I'd say my favorite premise is Future Diary. As cool as it is, though, it doesn't explore its ideas fully like Digimon Tamers so the result isn't as good.

Story =/= plot.

Hence why SAO has a good story. Nerd get traps in fantasy video games must overcome challenges and winout.
Plot of SAO-subaverage as romance is forced/way to fast. Too many time skips and pacing issues. Kirito too OP and doesn't focus on his characterization.

Although I agree, that doesn't change that many people use "story" in that way. Heck, the official review submission page splits "story" and "characters" into different sections, which helps propagate the idea that story = plot.

Can't deny that. MAL has many good features but it creates much ignorance among the users.
It's just annoying, imo, that sometimes people will say X anime has an amazing Story and what not, when in reality the story is a standard save the princes but the plot is well structured and executed.
