Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon, I guess. but I don't mean the good kind of "shock and awe" -- I'd probably have to hand that to Evangelion/EoE instead.

mmm both shock and awe?

TTGL is the only thing I can think of where I was in both shock and awe of the amazing story, animation, and characters

Princess Tutu. I pretty much stood up and applauded to no one when I finished the last episode. Beautiful story, great characters. Intriguing, if screwy plot. That feeling when a character you hated at the start ends up being totally beloved by the end... it's the best.

Spice and Wolf was a real shock and awe experience for me in terms of anime, even though it's really tame. The art is gorgeous and the characters have real life to them. And the fact that the series revolves around economics. It was a real eye opener.

Yosuga no Sora made me see the light.

Indeed, the only animé series that was utterly beautiful. It had romance, lolis, nudity, incestuous glory, boobs, a glasses girl, violins, swimming, sex, heart-wrenching conflict, and PLOT.

Just to be clear, I definitely watched it for the PLOT and exclusively for the PLOT. You must agree with me that the PLOT was amazing in its own right. I love PLOT.
Everything needs more fanservice. Especially real life.

I second this. What they did was pretty impressive.
And I'd also say Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. Don't ask, just don't. All I know is that when I finished, my face was red of excitment and all I could do was mumble "wow". The plot was ridiculous, but... So right. I don't know how to explain, actually lalw

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Good kind:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, based on the animation and the sheer scale and size of the world that GAINAX created. At times, especially towards the end, it felt bigger than life itself.

Bad kind:

Dead Leaves. While it did present a similar animation style as Gurren Lagann, the former was much more polished. Dead Leaves was just...I actually had to close my eyes while watching it so I could spare at least one of my senses for a few moments.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes for me too. It just had so much scope in its story that it opened up an entire new realm of animation storytelling, never to be visited by any other before of after again.

Baccano! I must say the first episode was confusing but everything was drawn together so perfectly that it made me speechless and wished there were more anime series like it.

Gundam 00 This series awed me because of the superb animation and quality of the show. The gundams fought smoothly and gracefully. I rewatched it a couple of times because I never get bored and I love the message of the anime.

FMA: Brotherhood is another 0.0 because of the style of animation and clean fight scenes and of course we all know that it is an amazing story with so much creativity.

Moribito!! Gosh no one ever remembers to think of Moribito! What a great anime in terms of characters plus animation and story that keeps you of your feet.

Hmm actually Ef - A tale of Memories had that effect on me xD I guess not as much the story itself as many certain scenes. The animation... I loved xD Yeah, they may took it too far at some very few cases (imo always) but I was rly surprised when I first watched xD Charas... maybe not so much if I think them carefully but in the end they all matched and they were good in their own sense xD
