How long have you been watching anime? Do you regret spending so much time on watching or do you have pride in being dedicated to something you enjoy?

I been watching anime since I was around 4 if you count kids series.  I think it toom around 21 years of watching to hit 1000 mark though I usually watch longer anime.  I do not regret devoting my life to anime and games.  I still work a job though.  I think time enjoyed is never wasted.

If you only count when I started watching anime as an adult it took under 4 years. From 2019-2022.

If you count when I started overall then it would be 1998-2022.

I do not regret the time. But it's not a prideful thing either. It's just what happened.

List things out...

First anime I seen: Original Macross as part of Harmony Gold's Robotech series on a VHS tape when I was 6 or 7 years old in the early 1990s.

Became a full-blown fan: 2002 when I dabbled more into anime with the 2000s anime boom with Toonami, Adult Swim Action, and a few random anime movies and OVAs via Showtime Beyond.

Hitting 1000 mark for viewership: Around early 2010s. At least per an old anime review site I frequent, 1000th anime I reviewed would have been Toaru Hikūshi e no Tsuioku (Princess and the Pilot).

Regrets: Maybe killing enough spare time on it as I got into my 20s. Still even as I've reduced the amount of time I devote to seeing titles and had my occasions of burnout, been 21 years and still watching titles when I have time for it.

I can only give an estimate, around 8-10 years I would guess. I watch a lot more anime today than I did back then, especially seasonal stuff, as gaming and live action have taken a backseat.

There's the common "could have been doing something more productive" point, like "lEaRnInG aN InStRuMeNt" or "sTuDyInG a LaNgUaGe" basic examples lol, but my mindset has always been, as long as you have your shit together (work, housing, independence, etc), it shouldn't bother you or others about what you do in your spare time. I'm still really into tennis as well, tennis and anime take up a sizeable chuck of my daily life for sure.

Slightly over a decade. I watch anime because I have nothing better to do.

It took me about 8 years to reach 1000 Anime. The difficulty of achieving 1000 Anime depends on what you watch, honestly. For me, I'll watch a lot of content within a franchise (such as all of the One Piece movies, OVAs, etc) which really adds up fast. However, I have also watched quite a lot of long shows which balances it out.

If you stuck to 12 episode shows, I'd imagine it wouldn't take too long to reach 1000 Anime completed. However, if you allow yourself to indulge in 100+ episode shows, it'll likely take you (at least) half a decade to reach 1000 Anime completed.

As for regrets, not really. I don't think you should ever regret the things you enjoy doing. As long as you understand your priorities, you should wither away as much of your time to Anime as you wish.

It took me more or less about 4 years to reach 1000 animes. I remember it was with Robot Carnival and I currently have +1700 after just over 8 years.

I think I still qualify to answer that question despite being nowhere near the thousand shows completed. The reason is because some shows have just 1 single episode (movies, for instance), while others have hundreds. Thus even with my low completed stat, I still have watched the equivalent of more than a thousand regular 12 episodes shows.

It's not really pride what I take in having so much of my life dedicated to anime, it's more like realism. I don't take pride in eating veggies, even though I like them a lot. Likewise I don't feel like I can be smug about watching lots of anime.
That being said, there are some titles I regret wasting my time on, mostly from the time when I used to force myself to complete everything I started, parroting silly deepities such as "I love the medium, so I can still enjoy bad shows". It was kinda like saying "man I hate curry it tastes like crap and I always get a stomach ache when I eat it... Still gonna eat it though. Because I like food in general, so I can still enjoy curry".

Watched in the really young days, but ramped out quite a bit 7 years

Once I hit 200th, that's when I ramped it up, so from that time so 445 days to hit 1000.

Majority no regrets since I saved money doing this kind of hobby, but still a sort of regret of how far I took things

I think I started mal with around 140 anime from my kiss anime account back in 2019 and hit 1000 mark a few months back, so it's taken 4 years. However we had numerous lockdowns over this time which I spent almost exclusively watching anime as there was not much else to do. I enjoy delving into this medium and look forward to exploring it further, especially large franchises like Gundam and Lupin, plus older fantasy and sci-fi OVA's.

Since 2007. More actively from 2015 when I started following seasonals.

Mind you, there are a lot of shorts, ovas and specials listed among those numbers.

The list doesn't invoke any type of emotion, it's just a list that helps to keep track of things. It is certainly not an achievement in any way. It could be shorter but ultimately it doesn't matter.

been watching anime regularly for 5-6 years and hit my 1000 mark recently with bleach as my 1050th anime. For old watchers it might take long but new anime are short the 12ep one which u can watch like upto 5 in a day. My 800 mark i think was misfit of demon king while 1k was mp angel next door. And i regret nothing but the fact that the plot of new anime are very similar like i have watched about 200 romance anime and now new are very similar so i dont watch them often. Thats the only sad thing is that u run out of content.

Been watching anime since the late 90s/early 2000s as a kid and almost a teen with Pokémon and some others on cable TV. Then my friends will record some on vhs or watched some on there and copied over to CDs.

But in the early 2000s, I didn't watch a whole lot of anime. Maybe 20-30 from when I started to around 2007 or 2008. I don't know but I was mostly playing video games instead.

I still play a lot of video games, but when I wasn't working for a little while, I definitely watched more. I felt like in 2013 or 2014 is when I really started watching anime, sometimes all day long. I remember spending days watching One Piece or other seasons of anime in one day.

@RentNoGirlfriend that's why sometimes number completed doesn't matter but days watched total is more important. I've seen someone with thousands of anime completed but days watched is in the 300s or 400 days watched. Then there's people with less completed but with 500+ days watched.

There are a lot of really short anime entries, especially in the avant-garde category, where the clips are 10 minutes or less but counts as completed. You can easily rack up 500 entries with those alone. Meanwhile, someone can have 500 completed but most of the anime they watched are over 50 episodes long.

If you watch 200 per year it will take five years. If you watch one anime movie every day that's already 365 anime per year, though.

I don't really remember. Only milestone I do recall is the 10.000th anime added to my list, which was the Girls and Panzer movie which I watched 2016. That was about 10 years into the hobby. It was also when I ran out of anime to watch. I then switched to reading Manga/Manhwa/Manhua and later on to Xianxia novels. The kind where it takes longer than one year to complete one.

It took me 9 years from 2015 to 2024 to reach 1000 anime (excluding most OVAs). Definitely don't regret it as it led to me learning Japanese and studying abroad in Japan during college which was one of the best experiences of my life.

I've started with ca. 4-5 yo? So let's say 26-27 years. I've watched Maya the Bee and Vickie back then, both are included to my list.

Also I have watched ~270 (or some more?) individual series, not 1000 different series.
In my completed list, there are shown 455 TV anime, if I sort it by type and scroll, and I assume circa half of them are second and third seasons and so on.

Do I regret it? Not at all and I don't think I spend too much time watching anime since I live for my hobbies lol
Also lot of these anime are 12 episodes, movies or ovas and lot of music videos.
