THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Set in 1911 and with a detective genre. Pretty new, but hopefully it won't go down the repetitive route. Seems okay for now

So the first episode of the anime was an anime original episode, interesting. The animation looks amazing, can't wait for the next episode. Hopefully they will start adapting the manga stories.

Lol. I don't know why but i felt a strong vibes after Moriarty just said, 'a perfect crime'. Such a nice way to get different ending as a usual detective cases theme of show, you finished the killer off, and became a consultant of the crime itself. Still, his reason kinda lacking knewing the flashback just not enough. A noble situations was only a hint that somehow led to the real situations of that time. Well, i think Moriarty just wanted to gave a proper justice, even for the average citizen, to get their revenge done. The MC became the antagonist, so where was the protagonist? You could check that by yourself. Lol.

Interesting story and really promising to see the interaction between Moriarty and Sherlock. Well, this might stick on my list until the end on my fullest attention, really looking forward for the next one.

While I don't like the manga whatsoever, gotta admit the music composition and the animation complements the manga's style really well. The lighting too is nice for this.

The material is mostly original, which is a different choice I'll admit but we'll see how the rest of the series goes. I'm not a fan of the content (even as a Sherlock Holmes novels fan), but Production I.G have not half-assed this adaptation from looks of things.

Looks pretty promising, I like the artstyle and the animation is pretty good for now. Just as Wolfie8338 previously said, I hope this doesn't go down the repetitive route.

7.5/10 or just 7 for now.

I think they did good on not starting in chronological order. Now animeonlys will not have to waste their time figuring out if they should watch after multiple episodes.

I really enjoyed BBC’s Sherlock and I thought this would be similar to that one. It doesn’t look similar at all but it still seems like it will be good show. I like the character designs of Moriarty brothers. I would really like to see Moriarty’s sociopath personality in criminal acts.

I was suprised too, I thought they will start by their childhood, but I guess that will be for later.

the first episode was an original one but it was still good and set the tone of what will be the Moriarty brothers' motives for their crimes. I'm confident that the next episodes will properly follow the manga, I hope so because it's amazing. As for the anime I absolutely love the adaptation so far, the atmosphere was rendered perfectly and they did justice to the Moriarty brothers ! Also for those of you who are confused, the story actually takes place in England, in the 1870's. The "New York, 1911" that happens in the beginning is the future. The kid was reading the story the anime will show :)

I've taken quite a liking towards this anime and detective stuff is probably the most interesting genre for me. It seems reasonable for the parent to get revenge for his child.

Pretty decent first episode, the only concern I have, as is the case with most mystery shows I pick up, is will it get repetitive as it progresses. Hopefully that won't be the case.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

woahhh a detective show where the MC is not some savior of justice?? Interesting.

Pretty neat start. Thought it was going for that generic "good guy saves the day" route which would've contradicted the beginning part, until the very end where William just lets the dad brutally murder the culprit. Not every day you see a more anti-hero style protagonist and especially not with a detective show so definitely looking forward to seeing what this has in store

Have to admit though, the character designs look very similar to Psycho Pass. Production IG be lacking :P

Thought this was episode 0 technically.

I hope this is better with new development of Moriarity character rather than being a repetitive solving episode.

The anti-hero of Sherlock Holmes, William James Moriarty and his POV, nice twist there for the detective focus.

As some may have pointed out, I'm worried that this will be on an episodic basis given the manga's paced arcs, but hopefully this will deliver somewhat, even though this premiere episode is purely anime-original (from the earlier discussion posts) to give the Moriarty brothers some context a.k.a Episode 0.

Some have been aniticpating this, and I can understand why after watching this. IMO, decent start and Production I.G. has a lot on their plate to deliver with this and Noblesse. Hoping for a proper stage for things to come.

Mostly pre-airs, that's why the 1st episodes are out faster than usual, this is quite unusual for A LOT of shows in this season alone getting pre-airs without any knowledge.

So far I'm pretty intrigued and the episode had my utmost attention. I wouldn't mind episodic nature, as long as we get some proper characterisation for William( there's also the possibility of cases that span over two or more episodes)

Production I.G is one of my favourite studios so for me I'm expecting something that intrigues the viewers every episode.

This episode was probably just an introduction to our main detective William but it definitely set the mood right and the end of the episode music was lit.

Great opening episode!!

This episode was not very good. The investigation is logical and the conclusions follow one another, but it was too simple to convince me that the New York police were unable to resolve the case. I have the impression that any minimally competent detective would be able to take the same path the protagonist took and arrest the culprit. So that only Moriarty would be able to do that, I expected a more difficult investigation. But I'll keep watching, as it seems to me that there will be no other investigations like this in the anime. Crime consultant? That sounds interesting. Let's see where this story goes.

It's very fantastic. Everything fits my preference. Combined with brilliant voice acting, William Moriarty has godly charisma as same as Sherlock Holmes. Dealing with major character opposition is extremely rare IMO. Looking forward to William's ambition and true strength.

Certainly a decent first impression, I've always been a fan of mysteries and the concept of anti-heroism so I'm interested to see where the series takes us.

The episode overall was decent- a bit predictable, considering the fact that as people have pointed out, the answer to who was the culprit of the crime is in the episode title. Despite this, I still enjoyed the episode, since part of the fun of a mystery is seeing how the culprit is revealed and what eventual fate the culprit meets. Production IG's animation also not missing a beat and looking great as usual.

7/10 for this episode alone, and reasonably excited to see the path this series will follow.

Colour me intrigued after that first episode. There is definitely not enough anime with this type of murder mystery plot out there. Nor the setting of the piece. I like the three brothers and it was nice to see a different sort of resolution to a despicable crime. Maybe could have been padded a bit more or made into a two part introduction. But hoping that the rest of the episodes will help unravel the whole as it goes along.

After watching Kabukichou Sherlock, this series was announced to be aired... It peaked my interest.. Moriarty is a mystery himself.

First episode captured my interest, a detective story in a Victorian Era, I am sold.

Decent start, not much happened but it was enough to leave some sort of impression and intrigue on how the rest of the story will unravel. Although I really wish they started with adapting the first chapter of the manga instead. I only read about three chapters then decided to wait for the anime before reading the rest, but I distinctly remember the first chapter being a good hook for a first episode. Ah well. Looking forward to the next one.

Production I.G. does a good job with the animation, and sound. I really liked the direction (lighting and shot choices). Neither the story nor the characters were particularly good or entertaining, but I didn’t dislike them. The ed didn’t fit tonally imo. I hope there’s an overarching plot of sorts, otherwise this is going to get repetitive fast.

I quite agree. The opening theme song fits well with the premise of the anime, but the ED choice song style is kind of odd.

I thought the first episode would air next week but I guess it's this week then.
That was a great start.
William is an antihero kind of protagonist. Also, this is set in early 1900, I like the old setting so this is a plus.
So from what I got this means the protagonist of this series is basically the rival to Sherlock Holmes, I actually never watch those but I still heard about it.
