THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Whoa, this first episode is impressive. Even the OP song is pretty decorative and colorful.

I got a slight rakugo vibe although the music and art is different. The setting takes place in the modern times and a school life setting. The character designs looks consistent while I like the general set up of the storytelling.

The character cast is okay so far. The MC is a bit talkative but his personality makes him easy to make friends. Good episode so far, really liked the way this started.

Mod Edit: Modified title as series name was updated.

Touched by a Kabuki performance and wanting to create a club for it. He knows Kabuki more than the teacher he asked. OP is nice, as expected from the PV revealed before.

Trying to search more members to create a new club, but some adversaries because two have kabuki background but gave up or hate it. Even losing a tooth.

Seeing an actual young kabuki performer. By the way, isn't it rude to interrupt someone's practice??

ED: "Oedo (お江戸-O・EDO-)" by Kabukibu Rocks (カブキブロックス) <- main 5 guys.
(it seems like a cover song to an old song by a band that is similar to the band's name, too, but it's "Kabuki Rocks (カブキロックス)" instead of "Kabukibu Rocks") http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/kabukibu/goods/cd02.html

An impressive first episode. I like the simple premise of a kabuki performance and then wanting to make a club for it. Kurogo's enthusiasm really shines. He's quite passionate about it. It's unfortunate people turned him down. Pretty good series so far.

I wasn't expecting much from this show, but I'm still surprised given how fresh and innovative the story turned out. Kurogo has a relatable personality and is surrounded by funny and interesting characters. The episode wastes no time in setting up its premise and the characters' personalities are established with no significant issue. The character desgins are beautiful, but then again, did you expect anything else from CLAMP? Kabukibu manages to strike up a good balance between engaging story and relaxed comedy; obviously a good thing because I doubt the series would have sold otherwise. I'm definitely looking forward to see what comes next.

Made me curious to learn more about kabuki, so I guess it succeeded as a hook. I'll watch some more. I like that they're ignoring the typical gender-exclusionary rules of kabuki.

This was surprisingly pretty fun to watch. xD But god damn it when it came to the teeth falling out because of the girl telling him to not go near the other it made me chuckle. Aside from that it's pretty much decent to good, probably would want more when its possible tbh. :3

I wasn't very enthusiastic about this Anime but I still somehow found this episode pretty interesting. I'm so glad Asagi turned out to be a girl, she's already my favorite character.

Still not expecting much out this show but hopefully they focus a lot on the actual Kabuki performances when they finish introducing the characters.

The beginning reminded a lot of Rakugo for a second there =o I wonder of Kabuki and Rakugo are in any way related to one another IRL (I mean I heard the MC mention Sukeroku but still)

Other than that, we got a really nice cast of characters here....The MC is pretty energetic and I love his determination, his IT friend is stiff but I like his sense of humor and how he plays off of the MC, the rock band guy is fucking TRASH LMFAOOOOOOOO I was dying of laughter by his singing xDDD

Asagi....When I saw her, I was like "Please don't let this be a trap", so when she confirmed that she was a girl I was VERY happy lol, I like her a lot and her fellow drama club member is pretty cute and funny xD and lastly, the dancer seems like he's a badass so I was really feeling him too (Plus I'm very impressed by what he accomplished in dance) + his really cute childhood friend (I ship it already lol)

Other than that, Kabuki seems to be a pretty fun hobby and I think I'm gonna enjoy this a lot.....I'm betting that the guy at the end is going to be THE rivaal too which should be nice...Hopefully he isn't a huge dick because I love to see some stiff competition

Great start overall, and I must say, this series has my favorite OP song of the season so far....I freaking loved it (This title can be taken away once I hear Bahamut's and Re:Creators but we'll see)

And now you cut my vocal cords with that and I can't be an opera singer anymore.

Pretty solid stuff so far, I've expected the worst, but it can go either way. Clamp is really showing though, with MC looking like a shota Suzaku.

Also, is the guy who looks like Yakumo Yuurakutei gonna be the antagonist? Lol, that's what I got from the ED.

Good first episode. MC is somewhat stereotypical but very likeable.

I was reminded of that time when I went with my class (while I was studying in Japan) to watch a kabuki play. We liked it and after that we used to talk in "kabuki-style" from time to time just for fun xD

Definitely going to watch next episode!

Nothing special for a "club anime", it was the usual recruitment episode where you try to get people based on their trait, even it they must be stolen from another activity.
An okay way to learn some technical terms and the beginning of a lesson in kabuki.

3/5 Wake me up once they hold their first visible performance (probably in a two parts finale. (without a show, it won't be worth the time)

Good thing that they include a girl despite the art's rules, unless she ends up being casted only for feminine roles.

Really?? Explain??? How is it bad??

Everything about the plot is so bland and bare bones you can literally see the storyboard. The animation is exactly what you'd expect of studio deen back in their sekaiichi hatsukoi days. Tonbo is a tool. Kurogo makes me want to punch myself in the throat. They fail miserably at the usage of a traditional, papery art style as a motif, as seen in the opening, which is superimposed sloppily with the insipid art style that is used in the show primarily. The concept of kabuki itself is presented in a way that reminds me of those low-budget health videos from the 90's that they showed you in school to try to convince you not to do drugs. Every new character interaction was essentially:
shota protag: pls join my club *eyes gain 20 highlights*
obviously plot important character: no because *insert sad attempt to sympathize with audience with a reason why they'd think kabuki would suck*
shota protag: actually, *insert sadder attempt to persuade you into liking kabuki that only succeeds in making you hate the kid with a flaming passion*
shota protag: *makes cringey kabuki reference that makes you understand how his one friend is a tool*
long story short; a waste of my anime strike free trial.

Is another Japanese performing arts which is deen charm to it cause they did Shouwa genroku rakugo shinhjuu.
Kurogo is talkative but that's his personality. Sure he'll get upset when you get rejected but won't you??

Animation I don't care cause is the least important for any anime to judge it from their animation alone.

So yea bad taste

As a matter of fact, Rakugo is one of my favorites, and it was that which inspired me to hop on this particular bandwagon. It's not that I don't like kabuki—if anything, I'm angry that they butchered it so bad.
Obviously, I'm not judging from the animation alone, as some of my other favorites have animation that is what many would consider being below standard par, those being Ping Pong and Aku no Hana. What differentiates those two examples and Kabukibu is that both of the aforementioned make use good directing and coordination in a way that allows their art styles to complement the show and give it its own unique personality. In the case of ping pong, its shaky, sketchy linework gives it a more casual, almost cheeky quality, and makes up for it with exquisite directing. With Aku no Hana, the attention to movement and lack of detail acquired from its use of rotoscoping lends itself a very eerie and unsettling aura that suits the story perfectly (in my humble opinion, at least). The animation in kabukibu is flat and uninspired and ceases to contribute to anything that the show is trying to accomplish. While it certainly does not account for everything, I do not think that the aspect of a cartoon or anime's art and animation is nearly as shallow of a point of judgment as people make it out to be.
In regards to likable characters: I do not necessarily think that it is essential for every character to be likable; heck even the main character, as long as it is properly and purposely executed. For that matter, Shinji Ikari is one of the most hated characters in anime, yet he's still one of the best. Why? Because he's relatable. The reason why I don't like Kurogo is because his character is grossly unrealized, unrelatable and done to death in other anime. His sudden, random outbursts of various lines from kabuki are supposed to be funny but are actually embarrassing and unfunny to the audience and even the characters around him, which is ironic in its own right. His lines are so to-the-point he may as well narrate the story, thus breaking the first rule of writing that you learn in grade school: show, don't tell. The show tries to make him likable, but because he is so unrealistically naive and egocentric—especially for a high school student—it simply fails to do so in my case, and you can clearly observe from the preceding posts within this forum that I am not exactly the minority in saying this.
Lastly, I'll say it outright: bad taste is an oxymoron. It's just not a thing.

Im so late on this but it was very fun and refreshing. Kuro's excitement over Kabuki actually made me excited just to learn and see more about it. I hadnt thought much of it before but this has been educational and entertaining. I hope Kuro continues to have his random moments of poses and lines in his characteristic tone, its amazing.

The future club members are all unique and interesting. Favorite will probably be the actual Kabuki guy, Jin Ebihara. His scene in the hallway was mesmerizing.
