Karuta: Meijin and Queen Records

Kyogi Karuta
- The Japanese national championship tournament of competitive Karuta is held once a year every January at Omi Shrine in Ōtsu, Shiga.
- The first ever championship Meijin match was held in 1955. Two years later, in 1957, the Queen match was added to the event. That comes to a grand total of 70 Meijin Matches and 68 Queen matches.
- Meijin matches are a "Best of 5" game series. So, first to 3 victories, wins the match.
- Queen matches are also a "Best of 5" games series since 2019. Prior to 2019, Queen matches were only a "Best of 3" game series. First to 2 victories, wins the match.

Naoki Saigo - Eternal Master - 14 Meijin Titles

He holds the Meijin record as a 14-time Grand Champion. He won all 14 in consecutive tournaments.
In his first Meijin match, Naoki Saigo faced off against Yoshiro Mochizuki. Mochizuki had been the Meijin for three straight years. Saigo struggled to find his rhythm in the first game, losing by 5 cards. He then lost the second game in sudden death, falling behind 2 games to 0 and now facing elimination. Saigo dominated the next 3 games by 9, 3, and 9 cards to take his first Meijin title.
Counting these 3 games to close out the 1999 tournament, Saigo would go on to win 27 straight Meijin individual games without defeat. A streak that spanned from 1999 to 2008. He was finally beaten in game 1 of the 2008 Meijin final by up-and-comer, Teruaki Miyoshi. However, Saigo would win the next three games of the series to retain his Meijin title.
Saigo would go on to win 4 more consecutive Meijin titles, but not quite in the same dominant fashion he had previously. He would lose at least one game in all 4. Saigo retired on-top of the Karuta world in 2012 after defeating the same man who ended his dominant streak.
After taking the first two games rather easily (6 cards in both,) Teruaki Miyoshi stormed back to take the next 2 games and force the final Game 5 match-up. A grueling battle that ended with Saigo taking victory by only 2 cards. This marked his 3rd victory over rival, Teruaki Miyoshi, in a Meijin match. Sadly, Miyoshi would never win the title of Meijin in his career.
During Saigo's dominant stretch, he had an even bigger rival, Masashi Tsuchida. Tsuchida would face Saigo in 5 Meijin matches, including three straight matches from 2003 to 2005. Tsuchida would never win a single game against Saigo and would never earn the title of Meijin in his career.
