Sistina attends a magical academy to hone her skills in the magical arts, hoping to solve the mystery of the enigmatic Sky Castle. After the retirement of her favorite teacher, the replacement, Glen, turns out to be a tardy, lazy, and seemingly incompetent bastard of an instructor. How is it that Glen was hand-picked by the best magician in the academy?!
Magic, School, Fantasy, Action... have been some of the most cliched genres in the past few years and its not rare to see 2 or 3 anime every season now that would follow the same suit . There have many which tried to bring something new to the table, But couldn't do much. And like all others This anime retains the same time tested formula ..but can be still fun to watch anyway.
This is more of a first reaction so i will not go into much detail for the plot. The story (like all others) Takes place in magic school where a magic instructor
is replaced by a substitute teacher after his retirement , and the new teacher turns out be a foolish, lazy and a good for nothing guy.. much to his student's dismay. But after certain events he becomes motivated to teach and he turns out to be a extremely good and knowledgeable instructor. The story then follows him and how he trains his students for becoming great magicians.
The characters are pretty much what u would expect for an anime like this. There is sistine who is somewhat of a tsundere.. she initially hates Glen but later starts to have some respect for him though she still maintains a strict attitude towards him for his behavior. Lumia , who is the best friend of sistine, is a regular dere dere character who treats everyone with respect ,including Glen. The male protagonist, Glen, acording to me is one of the best male protagonist I have seen in a while . He shows no interest in magic but is a extremely skilled magician. He loves to tease his students
(especially sistine ) , but is still a great instructor and takes great interest in teaching the basics which most students were not even aware of.
Sound and Art
there isn't much to say here. The art style is good, the drawings are also pretty neat Though I am not a big fan of the character design ( but that's just my opinion) . The sound is pretty fine too but nothing exceptional . The OP and ED are pretty fine too.
Overall this does't have an exceptional plot and doesn't bring anything new to the table but doing that isn't necessary every time ... the most important thing is the entertainment value of a show and this anime ,as mentioned before, exactly does that. It still might have some of its flaws but that actually doesn't mean that one should skip this anime, and u should try this too.. you'll not be disappointed .
First i would like to explain that i'm not a English native speaker and that this is my opinion on the first 3 episodes and how this anime dropped from a 8 to a 6 in 1 episode .
I will not spoil anything from episodes 1 or 2 they are the reason why i tough this anime was going to be one of the best this season (at least on the top 5)
I will however use a few spoilers about episode 3 . Very small ones just a few lines of dialogue and one big although i'm going to tell you in advance where
the spoiler starts and when it ends so you can dodge it
If you want just skip to the end to the TL:DR part for all of this resumed in few words with 0 spoiler but if you want to know how one anime can go from an 8 to a 6 in 1 episode please by all means read this.
Episode 1 is your average school comedy , a few cliches here and a few new jokes hated the way it ended.
Now episode 2 on the other hand was something new and quite awesome and thats the reason i tough this was a 7.9- 8.1 type of anime.
That reason for me to give it an 8 was because they tried to explain magic . Seems pretty stupid of a reason but most animes/books/films about magic they don't try to explain it .
"Why do i have to say does words to make a unicorn appear?" "Don't question its magic its not science" Thats the basic of almost every magic show . You have to say that because its how it works..
But this series tried and fucking did it . Was a pretty good scene , its about 5m (i won't spoil it) Everything about that was perfect for me . The reason why you have to say does words and the way it was explain was pretty good with a little bit of comedy but also a series tone to it .
The writing on that scene was also pretty awesome not only it explain magic (the magic of that universe not the magic of other shows like harry potter or zero) also showed the power of words .. One simple phrase can change your life forever or make you hate someone or love them all it takes is a few correct words.
Also the episode was fast paced and we saw a little bit of action and i was hyped for the next episode .
Now comes episode 3.. Sigh .. God how can the same person that wrote that scene in episode 2 can write something so bad and lazy ...
Now i'm going to talk why the writing on the episode was lazy from the way the people talked and the way they reacted, for this i'm going to use small spoilers and i think you should read this even if you don't like spoilers at all .
What i'm going to tell you here will not spoil the full episode or how it ends but its up to you if since i'm going by chronological order of how they happen you can stop reading after the first one if you think i'm talking to much.
First we start right after episode 2 and the MC is just talking about killing the other 2 invaders so they don't harm the students, the moment he said killing the other 2 the bandit that was "sleeping" at the start of the episode is magically awake and starts laughing so hard its .. Sigh he is like "HAHAHAHAHhazd hazdhazshahahhah ahdahhahahah i can't breath hahahahahaha you are a killer like us hahahaha you kill hahahaha" I mean .. dafuq ? Why ? Its pretty clear since episode 1/2 that this is not a united world .. You have armies that fight with magic .. I'm pretty sure even the cops sometimes have to kill .. Killing in other to protect its pretty normal and they never showed anything that in this world killing is like super rare and never happens.. right after that the student says " Stfu the teacher is not like you he is not a killer" The problem with that is that they know each other for a total of maybe 4 days 1 week max and on episode 1 the teacher goes on a rant about how magic is only good for killing so i'm not sure why she is so confidant in a person she just meet .. This hole scene was just so we could see the MC getting sad by the fact that he kills and that he will not denied that he killed before .. Even after this i'm like ok .. I guess they wanted to show us that he hates killing ..
Next scene a few things happen the fight ends i'm going to spoil here how the fight ends and why it was so badly written that everything about it was cliche and bad taste but if you don't want to know just skip all of this text and start reading after the*************************
So the big bad enemy . We know he is bad because he killed his friend only bad people will kill their teammates right? The moment they had this guy kill the one at the beginning of the episode was the moment i know he was going to die .
Now this is a Magic user that feels no remorse and that has no problem killing .. But somehow he finds the MC total open with no way to protect himself (The mc that he is trying to kill for the last 2 mins) and manage to fail all of his blades hitting ALL of the worst spots LOL srly . he hits 1 arm a shoulder a leg and the lower part of the body, its like he know he needed to keep the MC . Poor writing .. Its like you want an intense action scene but the bad guys fail all the bullets on the hero.
And if that was not bad enough when the MC kills him he says "I remember now .. The empire (or w/e) had a Pro killer that focus only on killing Magicians you are him" some shit like that and dies .. And like that all the mystery about the MC past is out of the way ..
First how the fuck do you remember now ? When you saw the MC you never said "Do i know you from somewhere ?" No .. Was anything on that fight so special that made you think "He the famous killer!" NO The way he fought was pretty bad and the entire fight ended because he bet that the girl would understand what he wanted and also you lost because you can't aim your fucking blades.. The writers wanted to tell the viewer the MC was a killer for the Empire and they announced in the worst possible way .
This showed that the writer is lazy and has no thinking of the future of the anime or just doesn't care. Can you image if on attack on titan episode 3 someone told Eren "Eren you are a titan you can shift into a titan by doing this and that etc bla bla bla" everyone would be like Fuck you .. Keep it hiding drop a few hints that make no sense now but in a few episodes will make you be like "haaa now that makes sense" part of what makes a good anime is the mystery...
And then they had the MC bleeding and saying "I wanted to me a Magician of Justice" Pretty powerful moment .. You see that he hates killing and he wanted to be a Magician that fights demons and does good for the people .. Well if it wasn't for the bullshit that happen before i would be sorry for him or maybe confuse .. Just picture that moment without everything that happen before 1000x more powerful you get sad for him because you know something in his past is dark but you just don't know what it is .. Was he forced to kill ? Was he part of the army? Maybe a mercenary or a killer for hire.. But its episode 3 and we already know that he killed because he was part of the army..
i'm not going to talk about the final "fight" all of this happen in the first 10-15 mins of the episode even i'm not going to spoil the end of the episode x) but this episode was just cliche after cliche and what for me was a lot of bad writing on the fight scenes and lazy writing on the dialogues with conversations that made no sense other the push the plot forward..
This anime was the first i saw that made me love it and hate in in just 2 episodes .. I will watch episode 4 just to see what happens next but i don't expect much to change .. If it does i will update the review but for now this is my final note
Episode 1 was ok
Episode 2 was awesome
Episode 3 was trash
I think everyone should watch episode 2 at least just for that scene of explaining magic its so fucking Good .
I hope it improves on episode 4 we will have to wait and see.
