Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau

Himari Kino is a cheerful and outgoing girl who is able to make friends with anyone she wants. When she enrolls in high school and attends the freshman opening ceremony, Himari falls in love with Yori Asanagi, a reserved upperclassman, during Yori's band performance. After the show, Himari blurts out her love, but Yori is inexperienced when it comes to romance.

Yori, who did not expect this outcome at all, looks for answers from her friends and music. She decides to respond to Himari's confession, and to her surprise, Yori discovers that Himari fell in love with her music and performance rather than Yori as a person.

Despite the shock, Yori desires to make Himari truly fall in love with her. The duo spend time together after school on the rooftop, where Yori usually plays her guitar with hopes to change Himari's feelings for her.

ok so my final thoughts on sasakoi , it's no secret that the production quality of this anime is really low , although they might have slightly put some more effort into the last 2 episodes , but more than that, I want to talk about the content , what sasakoi is as a story and what it shows and how , it's everything an average yuri is like, and it's what I expect a yuri to be at its status quo, in fact, sasakoi is so much of a vanilla yuri that it could be used as a ground 0 to compare with other ... yuri , and this is in no way a bad thing , it's good... but ... it's also a double edged sword, it's kinda basic , and it lacks unexpectedness imo , if I look at what reaction it got out of me , there wasn't that much that made me go "oh yeah THAT I'll remember it" , except maybe for the 2 last episodes that felt like they themselves united were more enticing than the rest of the show, but even past that I knew this was the goal as soon as I understood shio left because she was in love with aki , so much of it is predicting the next scene and waiting for it to happen, it's an average yuri ship chart getting resolved (shaped like a locomotive in fact) , ig shio was interesting but not much else going on for other characters , it's pretty normal , it's okay , I just wished it had a something more going on

the music was pretty alright for the last 2 ep

anime production : 4/10

general contents : a rather generous 7/10 because of ideology points , it would have been closer to 6.5 without it but now that I reconsidered it a bit maybe the manga has a better delivery of that same content in the way it's paced or other factors I can't know about because I didn't read it , in which case that would be only the anime's fault, but I'm not certain, maybe unlikely but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt

the final result is 10/10 because it's yuri and yuri is life

Mixed Feelings

This anime was infamous in 2024 for its production issues, and it is no wonder there are a lot of negative reviews. But is it really a bad anime? Not exactly but it's borderline.


§ Overview

When Kino Himari attended her high school freshman opening ceremony, she was enthralled by this particular performer, Asanagi Yori. When Himari finally gets a chance to talk to Yori, Himari confesses that she 'fell in love at first sight.'

Confused with the confession, Yori considered it and reciprocated. Little did she know that Himari did not fall in love with Yori as a person but in her talent as a singer ... and a guitarist. Despite the resulting awkwardness, Yori pursued Himari and they start dating.


§ Notes


1. Overall, it's not a bad anime provided you're not expecting too much from the story nor the animation. The story is pretty much a decent watch. I'm not interested in reading the source material, which is why I wasn't aware of its status in the yuri community.


2. That said, it seems that the source material is pretty much popular so much so that the earlier ratings of this anime are above 8. Fans of the source material were so excited that it might end up above 8, which is something unprecedented for a yuri.

Alas! The production issues happened.

If the source material is really that good, perhaps the blame should definitely be cast on the studio because this anime might have been great if not a masterpiece.


3. As for the main couple, they're not bad. Yori is cool, Himari is cute and likable. Their relationship, however, is boring.


4. Though not a yuri romance, one might compare this anime with A Sign of Affection. The couple's cute antics, gestures, and everything else can carry the show, even without the drama generated by an antagonist. This one needed that because Himari and Yori's growing relationship alone cannot carry this show.

And by the gods, the antagonist is the most interesting character in this anime. You will hate her immaturity for sure. Regardless, much of the conflict of this show is driven by her. She made it so much interesting as far as I'm concerned. (And yes, I do acknowledge that her presence is polarising.) It feels like she is the main character.

Even though Himari felt more like a supporting character, her actions do advance the plot. She is likable and a social connector, and this optimism for reconciliation is what was necessary.


5. Nitpicks. Contrary to our expectations, Himari did not fall in love at first with Yori. Too bad because this seems to be more realistic. When Yori fell for Hirami at her confession, wrongly thinking that Himari fancies her, I reckon this seems less plausible.

Some of the antagonist's actions and motivations felt contrived and unrealistic. One has to really suspect their disbelief to enjoy the drama.


6. I'm not sure how much of an improved experience one can get by reading the manga. But from the story, which is not too bad, it may turn out to be great.


7. I love the effect where a snapshot is taken to capture a moment. It somewhat reminds me of that use in Kimagure Orange Road.


8. If you're so into the story, you might overlook the lousy animation. There are so many frames where background characters are not moving.

Also, certain songs are not allowed to finish. Rehearsals and performances are not fully animated, which is a shame, save for a few. It makes it too obvious that the animation budget wasn't there. By itself, it's not bad, but it makes you wonder what this anime could have been.


§ Conclusion

Not having read the source material, this might be a great story hampered by the incompetence of the studio. It's not bad watching on its own since you're not one of those unfortunate souls who had to wait months before finally watching the last two episodes. But it could have been better.

If I'm writing a review it's because I just watched one of the best or one of the worst anime I've ever seen and 'Whisper Me a Love Song' meets that criteria:
Pure dogshit.

My God-given calling in life is to sift through the wastelands of tasteless yuri anime so that YOU don't have to, and I truly cannot believe that I had the psychological capacity to slog through this entire series. These were some of the longest 12 episodes of my life.

The first half of this series is a mirror-image knockoff of Bloom Into You (a yuri series that's actually worth your time) and the second ... half is an anticlimactic romance arc about background characters that no one could possible bring themselves to care about.

There were some pretty cute moments in this show but they were far outweighed by over-the-top cringe moments.

I am very compassionate with my ratings and gave this a six; for context, there are less than 10 other anime series I have ever rated this low.

If you're like me and you'll watch anything to say you did, this is the show for you. If you want to watch a good GL series, this is not the show for you.
