Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru

After her boyfriend breaks up with her for another girl, college student Akane Kinoshita wrestles with a broken heart and the memories he left behind. Loading up Forest of Savior, the MMO they used to play together, she forms a plan to get back at her ex-boyfriend through an in-person event for the game. In the process, she runs into someone unexpected: Akito Yamada, a gaming legend who just happens to be her guildmate.

Desperate for support, Akane ropes the asocial Yamada into helping with her scheme and lending her a shoulder to cry on. The differences between Akane and Yamada soon become apparent as they spend time together, yet they cannot help but notice each other's inner qualities. As the two gain more experience with one another in and out of the game, their tentative acquaintance may level up in a way neither expects.

I usually don't write reviews but this show is special.
The setup doesn't seem like anything special at first; a love story about two gamers, how many shows have we seen like that already? But what makes this show so special is that it feels so grounded in reality. There are no stupid anime character archetypes and tropes that define how a character will be. All of the characters feel like they could exist as real people in the real world. It makes it very easy to connect with them. How they act and the things they think about are very in line with how people ... are nowadays. I know this because I myself find many of the characters relatable. It's such a breath of fresh air compared to many other anime out there.

The icing on the cake for me is that, yes I find this show relatable, but I find it relatable in the most literal sense. Yamada and Akane's relationship mirrors my relationship with my girlfriend a lot. So much so that it is uncanny. If you told me that this show was based off of our story, I would believe you. I almost immediately fell in love with Akane because she reminds me so much of my girlfriend. She looks like her, she acts like her, she literally even has the same clothes as her! As for Yamada, now he isn't AS close to me as Akane is for my girlfriend, but he's still very much like me in a lot of ways. He's relatable enough for me to see him as sort of a self-insert character when he really wasn't supposed to be. With all that said, these are all just my personal reasons for loving the show.

Mixed Feelings

A tablespoon of unique diluted with a galloon of cliche and a dash of mildly misleading premise. That's my experience with Yamada Kun in a nutshell. What we have is an outgoing 20 year old university girl Akane who has the hots for our socially devoid Yamada who is this unreasonably handsome high school boy, also all the girls madly have the hots for him because "he's hot" or "he's good at video games".

At best Yamaka Kun for the most part has nothing you haven't seen many times already, you know the usual romcom cliches that show up in animes this one has most of ... those already. For an anime whose premise is about gaming you see very little of that in the 13 episodes it airs. Frustratingly Akane and Yamada have zero chemistry between each other so each interaction feels horribly awkward and forced. I was under the impression that there would be a lot of gaming sessions with Yamada and Akane but it ended up being the exact opposite.

I honestly think Tsubaki and Yamada had way more chemistry and she was far more likeable and mature than Akane who just acts like a middle schooler the whole anime. But you know how anime works, the childhood friend never wins. Also Runa is your run of mill tsundere brat so the audience is forced to put up with her too, good thing you dont see too much of her though.

Should you still watch it despite this review of it? I'm not saying someone shouldn't. However there are far more interesting and less frustrating choices in the romance category to watch.

Everytime it seems like it's about to get good and they're FINALLY gonna have some chemistry, nothing happens and instead we get a close-up of Yamada with sparkly eyes. I get being unaware of how you're feeling but for more than half the story it's so one-sided it's just sad. Also, he's a high school student, I really hope this is her first year of uni because that's just... weird.

Every single girl is a Yamada fan because he looks good? Pretty vapid, he has absolutely no personality. Yamada is uninterested in life and doens't even seem hyped about games either, if he were a spice ... he'd be flour. On the other hand, Akane needs to eat-pray-love her way into being a full character or at least more than an accesory, what does she even study? I see no goals or motivations here, this is some pride and prejudice "must find a man" 18th century mentality that can't even write down "Bechdel test", which I don't hate in a different setting or genre, but this is supposed to be current-time Shōjo?

It had a good premise and rating so I was expecting something livelier, but here we are. I finished and it might've gotten worse? Sadly it wasn't worth finishing. Not a single aww was awed. The OP is cute tho.
