Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru

After her boyfriend breaks up with her for another girl, college student Akane Kinoshita wrestles with a broken heart and the memories he left behind. Loading up Forest of Savior, the MMO they used to play together, she forms a plan to get back at her ex-boyfriend through an in-person event for the game. In the process, she runs into someone unexpected: Akito Yamada, a gaming legend who just happens to be her guildmate.

Desperate for support, Akane ropes the asocial Yamada into helping with her scheme and lending her a shoulder to cry on. The differences between Akane and Yamada soon become apparent as they spend time together, yet they cannot help but notice each other's inner qualities. As the two gain more experience with one another in and out of the game, their tentative acquaintance may level up in a way neither expects.

Pretty anticlimactic despite the slow burn nature of the show. Somehow a side character's rejection scene is a lot more emotional and impactful than the main confession scene at the end.

Not all slow burns are equal, but this one is pretty okay. The first few episodes are a bit too slow but it can get away with it, after that it's a nice journey. What really drags this show down is the ending, the confession is just not it, a rejection scene that happens just a bit before compeltely outshines it. The buildup alone was enough to expect a better climax, the rejection scene being ... as good and emotional as it was just added fuel to the fire, making it even worse in contrast.

Yamada's cold, attractive, oblivious character is way overdone, other than that the 2 MCs are enjoyable. The purpose of the side character felt unclear, some were given an entire episode and a background story randomly, but barely any character development despite all the screentime spent on them. It's in a weird middle ground where the side characters were not given enough screentime to make much impact on the show, but given way more than necessary for their contribution to the story. Maybe it's just an adaptation issue.

With the ending being as half assed as it is, a second season is needed, but who knows if we'll ever get it. Either way, if you prefer the journey over the destination, go for it, otherwise expect to get disappointed a bit.

Mixed Feelings

The style, direction and art of the anime is good. If you are into easy-going romances you can give it a try! However, some choices regarding the characters don’t sit right.

Akane is older than Yamada yet she is only portrayed as a cheerful hot mess. Her other personality traits are not very developed. Because of this, he is always the one saving her even though he is still in high school and the opportunity for a mature female lead is missed. The way they portrayed her as a drunk in need of attention more than once isn’t cute and other means to « deepen » they bond ... could of been explored.

Also, we have no development about some very agreeable second characters but some irrelevant random people get more backstory and even het to act as narrator in several episodes, which doesn’t add substance to the story.

I personally don't like romantic genre that much. But if the story of romantic anime is beautiful and unique, then I'd like it. I've seen many romantic anime. Some of them are love stories which I enjoyed so much. Some of the love stories are boring and I don't like them and (My love story with Yamada-kun at Lv999) is one of them.
The reason I didn't like it, story wise I didn't find anything to draw me into it. The two main characters gradually get to know each other through the game and from there their relationship blossoms into love. A very simple love story. ... Where there was no love triangle, no plot and no extra story. Especially in a rom-com anime, I hope to see a new and unique story. But here I got none of that. Too much simple
But I don't know why many people liked this anime. Those who are normally romantic genre lovers might like any simple love story anime like this. But in my opinion it's not such a likable anime.
Talking about the characters, I found the female character a bit annoying. And the animation quality is average for me
