Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (We Never Learn: BOKUBEN)

Nariyuki Yuiga, an impoverished third-year high school student, works tirelessly to receive the VIP nomination, a scholarship that would cover all of his college tuition fees. In recognition of his hard work, the headmaster awards him the renowned scholarship.

However, this scholarship is given under one condition: he must tutor the school's geniuses in their weakest subjects! Joining his new brigade of pupils are the math maestro Rizu Ogata, who wants to study humanities; the literature legend Fumino Furuhashi, who wants to study science; and Yuiga's sports-savvy childhood friend, Uruka Takemoto, who is hopeless at everything else.

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai follows Yuiga as he tries to teach his three eccentric tutees in a series of strange and comedic antics. But as Ogata's and Furuhashi's ambitions conflict with their talents, will Yuiga be able to help his students achieve their dreams?

Well, they've made it impossible for me not to watch the second season.

Oh well.

We Never Learn: BOKUBEN has a pretty normal plot, akin to that of the Quintessential Quintuplets. A boy helps his female students study and (hopefully) pass exams and finish the school year with flying colors while dealing with growing affection between the two sides. However, while the Quintessential Quintuplets focused more on family bonds, We Never Learn: BOKUBEN went more into the delightfully absurd and nonsensical end of the harem anime spectrum. I'm not telling you what it is, but it certainly made the anime a tiny bit more interesting. Also, its ... pretty much a comedy, but there are small, independent romantic moments where your heart skips a beat and you just bask in the sheer beauty of the moment.

And now, the characters. Pretty normal lineup of characters, except for the fact that Yuiga Nariyuki, the main protagonist of the series, is actually pretty average. He's not a genius like Futaro Uesugi, but the good thing is that he's not as dense as him either. Uruka Takemoto is the sporty gal of the series who's good at sports and nothing else, Fumino Furuhashi the happy go lucky girl who falls asleep the moment she hears a math equation, and Rizu Ogata the busty nerd who doesn't seem to comprehend human emotions and therefore Humanities in general. All equally interesting, all getting personality developments that honestly, should be focused on a bit more in the second season. Adding to this lineup we have Yuiga's purple haired senpai Asumi Kominami and his teacher and former tutor of Ogata and Furuhashi Kirisu Mafuyu. Not a bad lineup, the only problem here is that because of the amount of people, sometimes they don't get nearly as enough screen time/time alone with Yuiga as they should have. Also, the fact that Yuiga spent a lot of time with Ogata in the first few episodes and ended the season spending all of his time with Takemoto is a bit...unsavory considering that he should be spending time with each of them equally.

Also, the music is a bit inappropriate. Not in the PG-13 sense, but more like it doesn't seem to suit the occasion as well as it should be. Sometimes there's upbeat music for sad situations, and other times its boring music for tense situations. Now, this only happens once in a while so its not too big of a deal, and considering that this was pretty much my one problem with We Never Learn shows how well its went.

Finally, the reason why I have to watch the second season: Someone's mom's DEATH, a boy and a girl sharing a room together, and a severe lack of character development and loose ends that I hope will materialize in the second season.

Final Rating: 9.3/10

Very fun, well animated and with captivating protagonists, this is a somewhat controversial anime due to its creativity in avoiding an objective conclusion and also due to its difficulty in pleasing the majority of the public; I believe that when working with a harem — or something close to the concept — it is natural that everyone has their preferences and an objective conclusion can create a rupture with part of the public. Having said all that, for those who are interested in comedy (having a good laugh), twists ... and turns and are used to getting attached to more than one protagonist, We Never Learn: BOKUBEN is the perfect anime for you as it was for me.
The first season shows, in the first episodes, much of what the anime will be most of the time. The work does not deceive or promise anything, but it delivers many fun stories, lively characters with unique characteristics and depth for each of them; there are conflicts and development as the plot unfolds. From the point of view of routes, you are invited to identify with the one you consider to be the best and has all the support of the script, which is quite fair and balances things, so that it makes your fan base (or shipp, whatever they call it). ) in addition to having the opportunity to change your mind whenever you find more meaning in another pair. My recommendation would be to keep your feet on the ground and watch it as a romantic comedy without any great pretensions to seriousness; the drama is more superficial and clearly not the focus here.

Muito divertido, bem animado e com protagonistas cativantes, este é um anime um tanto polêmico pela sua criatividade em evitar uma conclusão objetiva muito também pela dificuldade em agradar a maior parte do público; acredito que quando se trabalha com harém — ou algo próximo do conceito — é natural que cada um tenha as suas preferências e uma conclusão objetiva pode criar uma ruptura com parte do público. Dito tudo isso, para quem está interessado em comédia (dar boas risadas), reviravoltas e está acostumado a se apegar a mais de um protagonista, We Never Learn: BOKUBEN é o anime perfeito para você como foi pra mim.
A primeira temporada mostra, já nos primeiros episódios, muito daquilo que o anime será na maior parte do tempo. A obra não engana e não promete nada, porém entrega muitas histórias divertidas, personagens vivos e com características únicas além de profundidade para cada um deles; há conflitos e desenvolvimento no desenrolar da trama. Do ponto de vista de rotas, você é convidado a se identificar com aquela que considera a melhor e tem todo o suporte do roteiro, que é bastante justo e equilibra as coisas, para que faça a sua torcida (ou shipp, seja lá como chamam) além de ter a oportunidade de mudar de ideia sempre que encontrar mais sentido em outro par. A minha recomendação seria manter os pés no chão e assistir como uma comédia romântica sem grandes pretensões de seriedade; o drama é mais superficial e claramente não é o foco aqui.
