Chainsaw Man

Denji is robbed of a normal teenage life, left with nothing but his deadbeat father's overwhelming debt. His only companion is his pet, the chainsaw devil Pochita, with whom he slays devils for money that inevitably ends up in the yakuza's pockets. All Denji can do is dream of a good, simple life: one with delicious food and a beautiful girlfriend by his side. But an act of greedy betrayal by the yakuza leads to Denji's brutal, untimely death, crushing all hope of him ever achieving happiness.

Remarkably, an old contract allows Pochita to merge with the deceased Denji and bestow devil powers on him, changing him into a hybrid able to transform his body parts into chainsaws. Because Denji's new abilities pose a significant risk to society, the Public Safety Bureau's elite devil hunter Makima takes him in, letting him live as long as he obeys her command. Guided by the promise of a content life alongside an attractive woman, Denji devotes everything and fights with all his might to make his naive dreams a reality.

The action looks great and is choreographed very well,. The writing has twists and turns, with lingering questions to keep you hooked. Denji is a relatable protagonist if you are a loser. Kind of a wish fulfillment self-insert for people who want to be manipulated by strong women and also be a chainsaw at the same time. I wish Pochita got more screen time. It has what you would expect from something called Chainsaw Man but its also a lot deeper than that. The characters all have their own motivations and the 'good guys' aren't very good, lots of grey areas in everyone's actions. A ... good mix of passionate idiots like Denji and Power, as well as serious characters like Makima. Some might find it to be dark gritty actionslop but I think its a quality peice of media.

Mixed Feelings

Chainsaw Man definitely stands out in visuals! The animation is seriously impressive; super fluid, stylish, and just plain cool to watch. MAPPA really did a great job with this!

Story-wise, it didn’t fully click with me. It’s not bad at all, just not quite my thing. The humor wasn’t really my style either.. some of the jokes just didn’t land for me. And as for Denji... yeah, he’s not really my type of character. He’s got this wild energy that I get some people will love, but I just didn’t connect with him much

There were also some scenes and elements I personally didn’t like..- just stuff ... that didn’t sit well with me or felt a bit off. Some of the jokes or moments lean into the ambiguous or distasteful side, which might be a turn-off for some

That said, I do think the way the show handles demons and its world-building is really creative. There’s a lot of thought put into how fear and power work in this universe, and it gives the series a unique side

Honestly, in terms of animation and for most of the story it’s a strong 8/10
Even if it didn’t fully hit for me, I’d recommend Chainsaw Man to people who don’t mind ambiguous jokes or the occasional distasteful scene. If that doesn’t bother you, there’s a lot to enjoy here!

This is when I realized that sometimes people who think certain manga is good fail to specify that only certain adaptations qualify.

You know how some Hollywood movies nowadays (Sonic (2020), The Mario Movie (2023) end the movie at a point where it feels like that should be the start? Almost as if these movies know they'll be popular enough to have a sequel where the actual fun content can begin?

That's how Chainsaw Man Season 1 feels. By the time you feel acquainted enough with the characters, it's all over. "Ah, yes! This group of characters have finally reached the point where we can get ... to know them as a group more..... AAAAAAAAND NOW THERE'S NO MORE EPISODES TO WATCH. GREAT!

Why it has been three years and there only exists 12 episodes of anime content despite this anime seemingly being everywhere (at least for me, I live in the Philippines) is absolutely bizarre. I read that the reason for this is because the staff is busy working on JJK. A real Sophie's Choice here (for context, I also do not like JJK)

I know that the pervert archetype is often one that is ridiculed and shamed for nowadays, yet for some reason, a massive community exists for Denji– a character who is the most transparent display of the archetype I've seen in years. I do not find it appealing nor noteworthy that his motivations resort to wanting to touch breasts or sleep with multiple women. I stopped being 16 years old a long time ago, so this power fantasy (hehe geddit) doesn't appeal to me anymore.

It also does the thing with the opening where it spams a bunch of pop culture references (which are admittedly well-animated) despite the actual content of the show being lackluster at best.

Does Denji act and think like how teenage boys do, especially given the apocalyptic fantastical setting? Sure. Do I find that appealing? Absolutely the fuck not.
