Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi

Immortality is something many people would wish for. But would it be such a coveted ability if people knew they would be subject to countless attacks because of it? Such is the case for Rin Asougi, an immortal private investigator, because there is no shortage of people who want her dead. Over the centuries, she has met many grisly ends, but each time, she returns to life as if nothing had happened.

In 1990, while looking for a lost cat, Rin runs into Kouki Maeno, a man who feels that his memories are wrong. Agreeing to help him, Rin discovers that Kouki is not what he seems, all the while drawing closer to her true enemy. This adversary knows Rin and her kind all too well, and if she dies by his hand, she may stay dead permanently.

No spoilers - I watched all of this in one go with my roommate around 2009. I recently re-watched it and through the eyes of someone approaching 40, it's not quite the masterpiece I once believed it to be, but it's largely held up well with age and is still a fun watch. The music def feels dated, and there are instances of still backgrounds which are immersion breaking (those are still common today though).
It's very sexual, graphic, and gruesome, but plot armor does crop up more often than I'd like. There are elements of the show which remind me of Ghost in the Shell, ... Claymore, and even Cowboy Bebop, but those are passing nods at best. Mnemosyne stands on its own with a unique story which spans several decades, and the central characters are two immortal women who take odd jobs as private investigators which periodically leads them to indirectly fighting the main antagonist. Despite being central to the story, these women are not always the main focus of each OVA episode - as the focus shifts away from them, the writing still holds up and the secondary characters are fun and relatable. The final episode of the OVA is probably the weakest - the grand showdown isn't as wild as I'd expected, and the final reveal of "why does this exist" felt pretty mid, but it's not terrible either.
Outside of the story itself, the evolution of tech jumped out at me. We start off with MS-DOS PCs from 1990, see Windows Vista in use partway through, and wind up with holograms like 60 years later. They paid attention to small details like that which really helped with the world building in a way that I've seen few anime lean into.
I would recommend this show to folks who like grimdark, action, and scifi movies/shows who are exploring anime for the first time, and to anime diehards, if you liked GitS, Bebop, Monster, Trigun, Psycho-Pass or simial shows... Watch this OVA, you'll probably thank me.

Mixed Feelings

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne, Is a Confusing review For me On One Hand I really Enjoyed The time skips in between each episode It suits a show that has a "Immortal" protagonist, following Rin(the Main character) feels satisfying as we watch the characters around her age, have children (many of whom become vital to the building narrative), and Eventually die . This Direction felt really unique and interesting it lead to the show feeling unpredictable and fresh. On The other Hand I did not enjoy how often the show' felt it necessary to overly sexualize character's and have several sex scenes/torture scenes per episode, while ... some scenes felt like they where adding to the narrative to show how depraved the antagonists of the story truly are Most scenes felt both unnecessary and often left a bad taste in my mouth. While watching the show My rating kept bouncing around I really wanted to enjoy and highly rate the show its just I couldn't overlook the constant horrific things that were happening to characters for absolutely no reason other than to be "edgy" and cater to the degenerates. Overall I would Give Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne somewhere between a 5 and a 6 However i would recommend it to someone who is looking for something new and little different ,the final episode was a very satisfying watch as all the pieces of the puzzle from the past 75 in universe years come together.

Main point: Bad, dumb plot, GREAT op and ed

I watched this a while back, I was using a word doc to make my anime list because I didn't really want to make an account here, I wrote, "stupid, dumb plot, no character development, completely flat characters, the only character I liked from the show died in like 2 episodes but he was a flat character as well" also I saw a guy on youtube who was talking about it and he was praising it but included dubbed clips which made it seem even worse. The only redeeming factor of the show is that the OP ... and ED were made by Galneryus. This made it a worthwhile watch because it was an introduction to their music. Galneryus is my favorite band; listen to their music. Btw they made Hunting For Your Dream from HunterxHunter, which I did not even realize, until I was listening to their music for a while, and it is one of their lesser songs. Only reason why I would recommend this would be to introduce someone to their music.
