Occultic;Nine

A blog disproving the supernatural, co-run by NEET teenager Yuuta Gamon and his enthusiastic best friend Ryouka Narusawa, becomes the catalyst that would bring together a group of people who supposedly have nothing to do with each other.

These individuals include high school fortune teller Miyuu Aikawa, who joins Yuuta to work on the blog; realist Sarai Hashigami, who is stunned when tragedy strikes his family; doujin artist Ririka Nishizono, who has an uncanny ability to predict the future with her art; black magic practitioner and local curse expert Aria Kurenaino and her ghostly friend; Shun Moritsuka, a seemingly childish otaku detective; and reporter Touko Sumikaze.

As this unlikely group, bound only by the strings of fate, find their way to each other, they are confronted with murder and other events that are shrouded by the presence of the supernatural. They must band together to solve the mysteries interlacing the city and their lives.

Premise: What if rumors of the supernatural are real? What if they can all be explained by science? What if there's a global conspiracy being enacted by an evil global shadow government organization? El Psy Kongroo. This series follows an eclectic cast of 9(+) characters who soon find themselves embroiled in occultic murder mystery conspiracies beyond their understanding as they seek to uncover the secrets behind these deaths for their own personal reasons. But it seems those who get too close to the truth are the most likely to die.

Luckily it doesn't take itself too seriously, nor fall into low-effort cliches of the ol' anime ... tropety-trope-trope slop.
The characters have a lot of wacky banter and fun: from friendly raygun shock-treatment by breast girl to the voices in my head, there's plenty of interesting stuff to enjoy here.

If you liked Steins;Gate or Baccano! this isn't too far off, (I mean it even takes place in the Steins;Gate universe, fighting the sh-sh-shu hush-hush organization with timey-wimey science, and that ep 1/etc is straight out of Narita's Dur-Dur-Dur/Baccano! style of unnatural ensemble cast pov hopping).

Unfortunately due to the bloated cast, quite a few of the main cast characters have barely any role in the story. Really only 4 of the main cast of characters have much purpose here, the rest mostly just hang around being surprised or waste screentime as we follow them doing nothing of consequence. The author at least throws each of them a bone here or there to at least get to read a line/do something at least once to advance the narrative to justify their existence in the story, but the story could've just as easily not been written to contrive including them at all. It really would've benefited from focusing entirely on the main group since they're the only ones doing anything. That said, very little of the show involves anyone actually doing anything, it's mostly just investigations/information gathering and filler excuses until enough time has passed for the plot to advance.

And there are a lot of subplots in this that are mostly pointless and go nowhere: everything involving the kotoribako and vangua, the juvenile detective- hell the entire police force, the journalist and entire journal team, the devil/black magic business with the girl, Miyuu and her ability to see the future and her friend, the ara-ara-artist... Though despite being mostly pointless, scenes are usually still done well to at least be entertaining. And while I say they're mostly pointless, they do usually at least tie-in to the main plot in one way or another, it's just that again this could've really benefited from being written without them to make for a tighter narrative. I mean we have effectively 2 plot points with no actual necessity to really anything inbetween and we could've easily started off the narrative at the 1st plot point which literally starts the "occultic 9" instead of dicking around for several episodes beforehand.

The ending was a little unsatisfyingly contrived. They kinda just start asspulling a bunch of magic bs solutions one after the other and that's all. Could use a bit more closure, but ok.

The english subtitles had some terrible nonsense translations, so I'd have to recommend watching it dubbed.

A rare case in anime of having actual attempts at cinematography (and often done well).
They put a ton of effort into animating plenty of endearing little animations here and there.
But the line art style is a bit rough and blurry, making it look lower res than it is.

Mixed Feelings

I See Dead People And Boobies

Occultic;Nine Is a show about young people talking to each other, where sometimes something bloody happened, so you will be woke up, but then we go back to more dialogue.

I could really feel this was a light novel adaptation, in the writer other work steins Gate, there was a balance and a pacing to it, that made it enjoyable and gave the story time to breathe.

But this just go so fast and most of it is just talking, after a while It's hard to give a damn about the science talk, because I don't care about the characters because the ... story has not have any time to breathe.

The characters are quirky, and has nice character design to them, but they just deliver so much boring dialog.

The story at least feels unique, but it is a unique mess that didn't feel compelling to me at all.

Recommendation: Skip this one. Mystery fans may get some enjoyment out of it, but it will be just as likely to be annoying and frustrating.

Occultic;Nine is an interesting little mystery story that is unfortunately dragged down by horrendous characters and a pretentious, grating style that intrudes on nearly every scene. Among the 9 title characters, only about 3 of them are tolerable (the black magic girl, the fortune teller and the journalist). The main character Yuta, Ryotas, and the detective are about as aggressively off-putting as you can make characters that are ostensibly supposed to be likeable. It was a chore at ... times to keep up with this series because I disliked the characters and was not invested in their struggles.

The real detriment to this series though is in this awful attempt at making the show quirky by dramatically speeding up the dialogue and using a very distinctive visual style. The dialogue will make your head spin and there is so much exposition delivered at lightning speed that it's virtually impossible to retain all the information they throw at you. To make matters worse, the complex plot involving time travel and spirit realms and things of that sort really needs clarity when it's delivering lore to the viewer and the speed-talking makes it difficult to follow once things ramp up in the last few episodes. They absolutely went for style over substance here, and not in a way that makes the series more enjoyable to watch.

That being said, the central mystery was engaging and I definitely did not see the midseries plot twist coming. I think this could have been a good series with some tweaks to the characters and a director that would just make a normal series instead of trying to show off how stylistically unique they can be. There are a few things I would criticize here as well though. I thought the pacing could have been better, as it was a slow burn most of the time but then the ending was rushed and confusing. There are a few dead ends where you get to the end of the series and look back and you're like "why exactly did we spend all this time on this side story when it didn't mean anything in the end?" The entire story of Chi and the kotoribako is like that. Lastly, the series tracks which day it is on a regular basis and it's unclear why until the very last episode. Some sort of signal to the audience as to why it's important to keep track of that, amidst all the other things you need to keep track of, would have been much appreciated.

Overall, it's a good story let down by bad characters and some unfortunate directorial choices. A few tweaks could have made this a fun mystery series, but sadly you can't wish away the flaws and I can't recommend it even for mystery lovers given how much I disliked the characters. One final thing to note is that the OP is quite good and worth checking out even without watching the series.
